After a dicussion with some fellow players, I came up with an idea for the variation system to make a comeback in MK11. Initially I'd thought of it for Injustice 2, but what with the gear in that game, variations aren't really necessary.
So, as we all know, the story mode of MKX ended with Raiden turning dark and all that jazz. So I had the idea of him and his fighting style changing due to his change of character. Therefore, I figured this could be worked into variations, which could tie into the story potentially. What if everyone had two variations, one good/light, and one bad/dark. This would allow variations to be marketed in a more interesting light, as well as cut down the number of variations for easier balance while still keeping it fresh to some degree.
An example of this being used on Raiden would be his normal good self having his expected fighting style and character look, then his dark fighting style having a different aesthetic look as well as different play style. One side having blue lighting and the other having a more hellish red and black lighting for example.
This would be possible to execute for every character on some scale, as the elder gods possess the ability to turn kombatants into whatever the opposite of revenants(see Quan's ending) as well as some possible netherrealm force turning kombatants into revenants.
It also allows easier balancing naturally due to the removal of a variation, as well as the possibility for very different playstyles for the same characters, which is what the variation idea for MKX is.
Honestly I think this would be a great way to keep hold of the variation system
while keeping it fresh and maintainable as well as giving it a reason to tie into the lore directly.
What do you guys think?
TL;DR two variations who are good or bad, opinions on it.
Edit: after seeing your opinions I can definitely see why it might not be the greatest of ideas, but I feel that it could work. Then again, simply because this is an NRS game, its not likely.
