A simple fix that turned my MKX netplay from garbage to gold

When I first got into fighting games, I had no idea monitors were better than TV's, not just fighting games, but for gaming in general. Lets not blow up this guy too much. I could have easily made this same post a few years ago. I've been using a monitor for a few years and it's way better for online gaming. That said, online is still trash for this game. The people that say the game is fine online are just used to NRS netcodes and mostly haven't ventured out to other games to see the drastic difference in online play.

I here you OP. I wasn't hip to all the input delay and netcode stuff until I started going to fighting tournaments. I recently educated my lil brother about the advantages of using a monitor over a tv and he swore up and down there wasn't a difference. Then he came over and played MKX on my ASUS 27" with 1 ms response. Then he was like, "DAAAMMNN big bra, you was right." I was like, "Next time listen when I tell you something u young PUUUNK." Even with a monitor though, the latency is still evident in MKX. I'm sure NRS is listening though and hopefully we'll see an improvement with the next installment as I'm sure it is prob too late to do anything significant with MKX.

Hey guys, as I mentioned I don't post on forums much, and as such never figured out the "mutli-quote" forum function. So excuse me while I answer some posts in boring old plain text format.

It was a while ago but I -believe- the tv was rated at 16ms, though I can't find a spec sheet anymore. As I mentioned, I was looking for the lowest latency 55" 3d I could find (though to my chagrin, turns out that latency measurement only applies to 2d mode, so 3d still lags to hell).

Thank you to those of you who came to my defense. Don't feel too sorry for me, though, as I'm a 36-year old grown man and actually fairly assertive in real life. There's just something about forums that tends to keep me mum. You know, it's funny, I swear I was just thinking of posting the other day how much nicer the tym community seems than the elitist a-holes over at SRK :) I guess a sensitive topic can bring the rage out of anyone.

And, though I promised myself I wouldn't no matter how I was flamed, let me momentarily defend my intelligence... or at least my knowledge re: input latency. I'm well aware, and have been most of my life, of the latency advantage that monitors confer, as well as the fact that adding input latency to internet latency creates a cumulative effect. I tried to pepper my post with disclaimers and "anticipating objection" (old debate term) statements to show as much. But I can't blame anyone for not reading the whole book. My whole point was that the difference in input lag seemed much higher than the difference between the two displays. Of course this is all completely unscientific and anecdotal.

I never bothered before because I had played many online games, including fighters, on both displays and had never noticed much of a difference. I simply thought perhaps someone else had had the same line of thought, despite knowledge of latency differences, and so hadn't bothered to try their monitor. Keep in mind that there are likely tons of noobs and intermediates lurking these forums too afraid to post, as typically only the "pro" posts get much respect (but you guys r still way chiller than SRK :) ).

Anyway, I hope it helps someone, but it might well not. Just sharing my story. If it does, I certainly don't blame anyone who it might help if they don't rush here to post it and be called an idiot for not trying it sooner :)

Same monitor I'm using :)

Just so you new guys know, the "response time" that is listed on most monitors does not mean anything. It's just a marketing ploy.

The only way to know for sure what kind of latency a display has is to have it tested. There are monitors that have been tested by the FGC and are used as a tournament standard. I can't remember them off the top of my head but if you search for Shujinkydink's youtube channel, he just posted a video about playing online and he listed the model numbers.

You can also visit displaylag.com for a lot of info on this topic, and a list of displays that have been professionally tested.

Resolution through knowledge and resolve.
The OP meant well. He just didn't realize that everyone here knew this already.

With that in mind, this thread gets...

From a technical side this doesn't make any sense at all.

Regardless of if it works or not, this game should work on a regular tv without problems and NRS needs to at least address thr problem, even if they don't plan on fixing it.

So people should replace their 42 inches TVs for 22 inches monitors because NRS didn't want to invest in their netcode?... make sense. Btw, thanks to the OP for his good intentions, sadly the issue here is not my TV but the greedy inepts at NRS
You're absolutely right, no one should have to use this workaround, and NRS needs to improve their netcode so that a typical tv is playable. As is the case with so many other fighters out there right now (everything crapcom, guilty gear, KI). There's no doubt about that, and hopefully they'll give us something akin to ggpo next time around.

In the meantime though, if you're lucky enough to have a spare monitor lyin' around, it's worth a shot...

Ha, wow, 18 people (17 likes on conspiracy post)legitimately think I'm a corporate schill trying to win favor for NRS, More likes for that than any other post... wow. I've got a laundry list of complaints about Netherealm in general I could get rambling on, if that would help prove we aren't in bed to... sell Netherrealm monitors, I guess?

Someone asked about my splitter, it's just a little "Enjoygadgets" I got off of Amazon. Didn't research it a ton, works great though, 5 inputs. Came with a little remote, too, which I made a point to lose in record time.

OP was just trying to help. No reason to castrate him. I knew this and it's very well known. But it shouldn't have to be this way because NRS has a bad netcode.

Every time someone reaches out in this community, their is someone out there bashing them. All this guy is doing is trying to help and worthless breast fed little kids come and talk shit. If you don't wanna take his advice GTFO simple. This community has become trash since Mkx release.
Although I agree with you that these guys are a**holes for bashing someone who's trying to help the community what's your beef with boobs bro?? lol!

hahahahaa, yeah, most people know about this xD.

MKX still laggs online tho...

Good effort tho :) . Oooor, nice trolling :D .

Iowa's Finest.
If you want to play on a big TV with no input lag, there are Plasma options out there. LED based tech usually means the bigger it gets, the worse the input lag.

I agree with this. I noticed the difference when I play at my friends house compared to my own. I have slightly more on his monitor, you can really tell even if it's practice mode. I'm good enough to confirm my attacks online w/ lag but I was confused by how slow it was on his monitor it was crazy. So this is legit from my POV

too smart to play MKX
I've always played NRS games on a monitor. NRS games have always felt underwater online. If you hate the netcode, do what I did and stop giving money to developers who make 2006 netcode in 2015.

Hell, NRS gave the exact buffs I wanted to the only two characters I enjoyed playing in this game and I STILL don't regret getting rid of my copy and probably never will.

I so don't understand our reality here. A fighting game with shitty netcode might as well never get released; the CD it's pressed on is basically a shiny little frisbee for all it's worth. I'm sure all the people with the privilege of the time and money to travel around and play this game feel like they got their money's worth but the other 85% of us got F'd in the A.
