Let's Talk Commentating at Majors

Smarrgasm

What's a Smarrgasm?
I hope no one was disappointed with my commentary. I was on for about half the pools with 16 bit and i try to keep from harsh criticism and just focus 100% on whats going on in the game as well as possible storylines behind the match. I know for my friend Xenomorph he felt kind of insulted by how some people were commentating his matches and although that may not have been the intention thats how it was for him. Just something to think about. Just because someone is playing differently or getting away with things its not right to harp on that throughout their matches.

A few of you are intertwining "skill in game" with facilitating how things are handled by our own community. CS doesn't need to go to events to make an assessment of how the commentary goes at events. He's offering a possible idea/spark to get everyone on board with making some progress forward with the community. Maybe not "have a stick up your ass" when you commentate change, but in general I like the idea of not being blown up when I finally fight my way onto the stream station. Most of the time, I never see any of it because we have some good commentators. So yea, he doesn't need to prove himself against people who play the game for 15 hours a day when there are other ways of helping the community out. Offering constructive criticism is one of them.

I went back and listened to all of the commentary for all things Injustice during KiT. Not once did I see any issue with the commentary come up.

I honestly think that KiT was the best commentary that Injustice has had for quite some time now. All parties involved did a great job.

Yeah man -- it wasn't you. But what happened to Xeno was completely uncool.. It made me really sad to watch and I know our community is better than that.

And exactly -- making it far in pools and playing on stream is nerve-wracking enough; why should someone have to worry about the commentators yelling out insults loud enough that the players can hear on top of that?

Yeah, I'm not gonna comment about this, but I think Shadow means more in general, not that Saucy Jack and DMS are assholes.

I know he means more in general. Most all commentary I hear is pretty good. (I'm yet to see KIT as well)

how would u know? uve never been to an event .]
Cant tell if you're just trolling cause you dont like him or you really dont think before you write shit on here. How would anyone know this? Well its from being at home watching the stream. If you're at the event then you cant hear it. This has been a problem in all communities since day 1. I think he is also referring to the commentary for Xenomorphs matches mostly. It can be very discouraging to new players

At this point in time, I suck at the game I shouldn't even be allowed to be on stream lol, if I get blown up for playing like an idiot, good I deserved it. Why are people so sensitive these days, SMH.

I was wondering if this thread would be made. Rumors circulate, and I have been told that a few people were displeased with my commentary, specifically during xenomorphs matches. I cannot speak for the other commentators, but Im guessing this is mostly aimed at me for KiT.

I will say that I have spoken to xenomorph, and unless something has changed, he understood that it was tongue in cheek, and that I actually very much love his Green Lantern and it's yolo play style. The Ghandi references were because GLs D2 literally looks like a Dragon Punch. Xeno and I had a laugh about it, and if the player is not offended, I don't know what else to say.

I did allow my language to slip on two (I believe, dont quote me) occasions. That IS something I wish I would not have done. I will take that criticism and not dispute it. I was mad at myself at the time for doing it, and Im still unhappy I did it now.

There are many "inside jokes" that come out in commentary, and I think that's fine. Personal opinion. My counter arguments would simply be that a) much of the community already knows them and b) those that don't can now learn them and choose for themselves whether to use them or not. I personally do not recall a time where we left an inside joke without explanation, or it left viewers without match knowledge.

Everyones commentary style is different. Some funny, some serious, some play by play, some trolly, etc. I don't see anything wrong with that. I like that we are not cookie cutter. If at any point a streamer or TO asks me to get off the mic, I will. That is their choice.

Overall via twitter, PM, FB, etc, the response to my commentary has been overwhelmingly positive, and Im thankful for the support I have. For the few negative critics, I thank you as well. I won't get better without input from both sides.

are u always dangling off of someone's dick? seems to me that you are. both times ive said something to CS(which he has ignored because he doesnt want to get put on blast) you have came swooping in trying to be a hero. just stop. and i mean he wouldnt know because hes never been to an event because nobody takes it to the heart. they are butthurt and salty for a short period of time but when it comes down to it. everyone is basically friends. people fail to realise that

It's different if you're actually friends with the people. How am I supposed to establish a friendship with someone when they're trashing me left and right on stream?
I was getting blown up by them by like week 2. Maybe its just my personality, but I've never held against any of them for blowing me up on stream.

Btw, for whoever said the only really good commentary was MLG and EVO, those were the only 2 tournaments I know of where the commentators were paid for their services. In these grassroots majors, it's whoever is around. Probably 5% of players are good at commentary, and sometimes they are in a pool, playing another game, etc. So, you sometimes get stuck with someone who isn't good. Check out KI commentary for example lol

It was me, and I'm aware of all of these things. Really goes to show what a few bucks gets you :)

When I spoke to Xeno on Sunday that is not the response I got. If he has changed his mind I will happily talk to him again and apologize if he feels it is necessary. Everything seemed alright with him then, but I understand opinions can change.

Well 16-bit is kinda known for that. I'll give you that. (Just so you know, it wasn't bit who blew me up on stream.) Its just annoying that sometimes the match won't be commentated on. For the short time I do get to hang out with people they are mostly cool, the GGA guys especially. :)
