What's new

If I was going to start listening to Metal, where would I start?

This is kind of an odd question, but recently i've read that to some people listening to metal is like a release(relaxing, I guess?) and i'd like to give it a shot.

I'm open-minded, i've just never gone out of my way to listen to it before.

EDIT: Everyone listen to rev0lver and put your videos in Spoiler tags, we don't want threads to be lagging everytime you change a page.

The thing about metal is it is such a wide wide genre, with a lot of different sounds. I would start with the big 4 - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Metallica is a good basis for what metal is really about in a lot of cases. Then I would branch out, depending on what you like and don't like. I do want to give a shout out to some of my personal favorite bands, Dream Theater and Symphony X. They have alot of material that ranges in heaviness, but it is all progressive which means lots of technicality and complicated music. Both really talented groups.

system of the down ^^ This is the best way to start with something not too hardcore I think. I listen mostly hiphop music and this is my advise.

Yeah depends on the particular genre of metal, but it all began after hard rock, with bands like Deep Purple who were not metal yet. First metal bands were heavy metal like Judas Priest or Black Sabath. But later down the road metal mutated so much! Now there is crazy shit like Black Metal, Death Metal or Speed and Power who are still closer to Heavy. I listen to Progressive metal mostly ( love Canadian band Protest the hero, Americans Between the Buried and Me and stuff like that)

System Of a Down are one of my favorites, but they aren't truly metal, they mix anything from Grind Core to Beatles kinda stuff:)but that is what I like them for

What kind of metal are you listening to now? Theres a huge range from classic to goat-sacrificing-awesome.
What kind of metal are you looking to get into? Any specific genre, super heavy, kinda heavy, etc.?
Well the only artists previously mentioned that i've listened to were Metallica and Black Sabbath but only casually (meaning like 1 or two songs an album) if that makes sense.

I'm not looking to overload myself in one night.

I'd say Metallica is a start for popularized Trash metal. Oh you really are listening to Symphony X and Dream Theater - I just love those.what do you think about Protest the Hero?

Both are excellent starters for getting into it.
I'm not particularly well-versed in Sabbath, but I would say give any of Metallica's first 4 albums(Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All) a full listen to see if anything clicks.

Staying in a Thrash metal vein, Testament and Sodom are both exceptional for the aggression combined with excellent songwriting skills and melody.

I don't know much about them, but from what I have heard I like. And yeah. I actually used to listen to like A7x (which they are still okay, but ehh) and when the whole thing with Mike portnoy happened I figured I should look him up, and never looked back.
