Are We In a New Gaming Renaissance?

The skill set was vastly different but I've made my peace with it. I know it's gone and this is why I am crossing my fingers for Titanfall to be the next "clone shooter" because it has JET PACKS and big GIANT ROBOT ARMORED METAL SUITS as well as the FPS elements.

BF4 is cool and all with tanks and stuff but come on.... Titanfall has big giant robots! They scoop you up with their giant robotic hands and throw you in the pilot seat! AWESOME!!
midair discs were like skeet shooting when the clay could randomly change its arc and your bullet travels at 30mph. truly nuts.

that titanfall game doesnt look like a jetback from the 1 video ive seen. i mean it is but it looked functionally more like a double jump

Where is crossplay?
CrimsonShadow Yes, for sure there were plenty of easy games that you just herp derp your way through. I like the Sonic and Knuckles example cause I remember beating that in a day or 2 on genesis back in the day, even 10 years old I knew it was an easy game.

However, Mega Man is a prime example of difficulty. Mega Man 2, out of any game I played in my life, had me break multiple controllers as a kid. Even Mega Man X series on SNES was significantly easier and I get you have to cater to the casual crowd, it's just a shame that's all.

I think it is a double jump but the second jump is a jet pack. I think it only works on walls.

You will never see shots like this in any modern shooter.

I'll see if I can find a good Q3 one but these two are the best Tribes 1 vids.

I played Contra 3 or 4 recently with KRYS9984 on a PC SNES emulator. I think we couldn't even beat the first level as a team lol

Old games were rough.

i cant access youtube but i was always partial to 'fragged by lexer' or any of the old ESWC or Quakecon compilations. whichever one had that zero4 double rail on the dm6 jumppad.

i also like to show people who mess around or play tf2 casually the video 'seven brothers who arent brothers' just to show them what people in that game are capable of

Here's a good Q3 pro vid from ESWC that accurately demonstrates what the the skill set required and how vastly different it was back then.

Notice how the player being following is controlling the map, zoning the power ups with rockets, using rocket jumping (which you sacrifice health to do) in order to catch his opponent running to other parts of the map. Also around the 9 minute mark on the in-game clock (top right) the announcer explains why the guy delayed his power up of the armor and it was in order to mess the timing of his opponent to confuse him and throw him off balance.

and check out what happens when the main guy being followed looses control of the map (his first death).

Different times man.

Damn, that seems next to impossible, but to be fair I feel like doing tricks bots in CoD where they do like 2 360's switch weapons place a tactical insertion and then noscope someone from half the map away takes similar skill

To be fair to COD and BF, I do find those odd random knife grenade kills amusing in COD and that one vid in BF where the guy ejects from a plane and bazooka's the enemy air jet tailing him then lands back into his jet was quite good.

Here's what a typical multiplayer game looked like in Quake 3.

Much different than COD isn't it?

Edit: at 08:15 is a very nice example of the usage of a rocket jump used for both mobility and to gain positional advantage. Mind you he's chasing a guy with Quad Damage so he can die in less than a second if he gets targeted by him and then check what happens.

back when ksharp was in 3d with rambo bullseye etc they all came to a LAN in louisville "Million Man Lan 1" i think in 2003. They played the best offline team in Kentucky 'Final Chapter' who of course had been owning everyone in the general area for months. They were probably around a mid-tier Cal-I team at the time. The tournament had a cash prize so 3d was playing their A game and it was just nuts to watch. It wasnt even close lol

Get over here!
I don't even know... it honestly feels about the same to me. Some things are improving... some things are getting worse. I don't really have an opinion. I mean I loved some older games... I hated some older games. I love some current games... I hate some current games. I will love some games... I will hate some games.

I mean nothing is really changing in my honest opinion.

MAJOR differences from now from the past for one is the difficulty. Especially today you have maps for everything and usually unlimited lives and continues.

Stories in games were also better back then too and you seemed to have more of a variety. Offline games are no longer the focus but that's the way the world evolved

The only game that can compete with the storytelling of a game like The Last of Us is something like Half-Life. Honestly games with stories that good are few and far between.

Even the 'mindless braindead' shooters of today have better stories than stuff like Quake.

I feel like nostalgia colors a lot of things for people.
