Controller Inputs [Xbox]

I'm nearly 20 years removed from Mortal Kombat on the Sega, but we bought our son (11) an Xbox for Christmas. I was very anxious to introduce him into the culture of fighting games. I originally purchased Mortal Kombat, but was quickly educated that "M" for Mature truly means Mature when it comes to that game. I was excited to see that Injustice was by the same company with "comic book" violence.

All that being stated up front, my son has all but quit playing and I find myself increasingly frustrated with the game inputs. EXAMPLE

a particular move requires: Down, Left, Right, "A"
when i execute the move the input feedback says: Down, UP, Left/Down, Right/UP, "A"

when i go into practice mode, i'll rehearse a particular move over and over and very rare does the move ever execute properly. The biggest annoyance is seeing my character jump back like a moron when performing the Down>Left.

1 - There is no way I'm going to convince my wife we need a "Fight Stick", it's never going to happen
2 - What controllers are out there that have dedicated D-pads

What are some ways you guys have compensated for these irregularities? I've spent a few hours working on moves, and it's so frustrating to see your character perform just goofy actions. I know that the older style games allowed sweeping movements: Down, Left could actually be a Down (clockwise sweep) Left and it would work, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

MACHKAAAAA!!!!!
I think the best Xbox controller is one with a rotatable d-pad. The biggest issue with them is their poor construction. I have gone through 2 and it's usually because the center-piece that holds the pad together snaps...most likely due to one too many rotations. Oh and Microsoft will replace the controller, but you will just get a generic 360 controller. Not one with a rotatable d-pad; which you actually paid $10-$15 more for.

Otherwise, it seems like every controller I buy has some sort of issue with sensitivity and, mainly, getting forward and backward movement to be reliable is a crap-shoot. I can't tell you how many times I try to dash forward, but my character crouches over and over.

The whole negative edge "off" option is very misleading too. 75% of the time I will crouch, attempt to stand up and move backwards, then attempt a basic attack, but I end up doing Batman's down+back X air grapple instead. Combine the game's ultra-sensitive inputs with less-than-ideal controller sensitivity and you have some very frustrating moments.

Get a rotatable d-pad, rotate it so the d-pad is elevated, and never switch it back again.

Get over here!
Everyone has issues with the command grab at first. It gets better with time. My advice would be to "roll" the input. Then again... I am on PS3 so I am not sure how different things are... I mean I don't know... fight sticks are fairly inexpensive you plan on playing the game a lot.

THE MUFFINS ARE BEEFY
If you have sloppy inputs I recommend buying an etokki ps2>xbox360 converter and then buying a playstation 2 dualshock controller. The D-Pads on those things are great and it'll only cost around $40 for both controller and converter.
