An insanity plea is hardly better. The reason people do that in the first place is to avoid the death penalty. People who are locked up in mental institutions usually have a very long stay and it's very hard to be evaluated as healthy enough to be released back into society.

Ah, yes, people do love to cite the most extreme cases of criminal conduct in these arguments. The problem with that is that the extreme criminal does not compose the vast majority of offenders. The average thief or drug abuser (the vast majority of crimes right there) is not homicidally insane.

no offence but i am more worried about the insane over the drug dealers those are the people i feel need to really clamp down on

i mean lets face it people dont want to except that a guy like dahmer bundy or manson exist so they try to play off its a mental illness or some troubled childhood

imo i believe some people are in fact wired to be evil and thats what scares me

Certainly. But this case does not prompt that issue - this case is about a repeat offender who was trying to steal food of all things, who we actually have very little background information on. I would not so readily call him a sociopathic criminal, and if he is it's quite possibly because he's been in and out of the system his whole adult life and knows very little else. The prison system and justice system actually reinforce bad behavior.

I don't think that is psychologically admissible.

It's going to cost tax payers a little more than $35 to keep this dude in prison for 50 years lol.

"How'd you end up in this place 50 years, shit man musta been some hard core shit nigga!"
"I stole some ribs."

That's about right.
What were his previous felonies and how many has he done? That can factor into the ruling.

Regarding the celebrities, they have money. Plain and simple.

Worries me that it got to the second page without anybody bringing this up.

This guy might not be a repeat offender if we had any system for rehabilitation instead of just incarceration in America. We have the largest prison population in the world per capita, and I believe in terms of raw numbers as well. By the way - prisons are privatized in America. The people running them are paid by the state for every inmate they house. How do you suppose they're going to maximize their profits?
Just to play devils advocate, how exactly do you instill respect for the law in an adult that clearly has none?

Just throwing this out there. I often see people arrested in Florida that have over 10+ felonies that get out of jail and keep doing worst things. I agree with 3 strikes. Example ... this is fucked up.
OPD identifies disabled man fatally stabbed at McDonald's
December 27, 2012|By Amy Pavuk, Orlando Sentinel
Orlando police said a felon who was released from prison last week — who has a history of stabbing people — killed a disabled man at a McDonald's restaurant Christmas Day.
The victim was identified today as 52-year-old Steven Lang.
Jerry Antone Tyson, 38, made his first court appearance Wednesday and was ordered to remain jailed without bail.

This leans into one of those dangerous assumptions I was talking about. We lack knowledge of what specifically motivated this man. Could he be a criminal sociopath hell bent on antagonizing law-abiding citizens? I suppose. Could he also be someone who never received a proper education, a decent job, and someone who has been repeatedly denied any opportunity to advance or improve himself due to his record? Yes.

I get that... after one felony.

Maybe after 2... if you're pushing it. But over 3? Nahh guy deserved it.

I don't really give a damn what his sob story is, he still has no right to assault and rob people.

Duck, your point should be at least an equal focus to better society in relation to punishing crimes. Improving mental health is a must to prevention and would help our society the most. But some are beyond help and need to be dealt with accordingly.

Lmao.
If given the choice to steal ribs or to kill someone (wanting to avoid the least possible prison/jail time), and you had to pick one no matter what.... it's absurd to think that killing someone in most cases will get you less imprisonment time than stealing ribs....

lmao...

A cow's death and its remains gets more justice than a human life.

Cows have no choices in a lot of things.

This guy, had many choices. He made bad ones.
