I must be Insane. Does Fun Matter?

I write too much.
Well, regarding the OP, fun is arbitrary. Some people can't enjoy losing at all, regardless of why or how, and if they're not winning, they aren't having fun. For those people, picking a top tier is what brings them the most fun. I had a friend like this when I played Smash competitively who dropped all character loyalty he had towards ROB when introduced to the competitive community, and the tactics that made MK the best character.
This same player claimed to love all fighting games at a competitive level, but when the rest of the local scene moved on to other games, he chose top tiers, got bodied (Because they weren't AS good as MK was in Brawl), and promptly quit the games since he wasn't having fun as he wasn't the best.

Conversely, you have players who enjoy the challenge of playing with low tiers, and have the most fun playing bad characters but outplaying their opponents and winning with said characters.

You also have players, of which it sounds like you may be one, who pick their favorite characters and stick with them due to character loyalty. Beating their opponents with their favorite character makes the game fun for them.

Finally, you have those who like certain playstyles, and stick with those playstyles regardless of who the character is or what their tier placement is.

Of course, then you can mix and match all of that, but what I'm getting at is what may seem like someone betraying their principles to win may just be their way of optimizing the fun they have with the game.

Personally, I tend to go mostly for playstyle, but also try to have a high/top tier counterpick character in most games because the characters who's playstyles I tend to like usually tend to be low tier as all hell (Mario in Brawl, Ezio in SCV, Captain America and Chris in vanilla Marvel, etc.), although they also tend to be the ones I have the most fun playing, especially if no one else is playing them.

I don't know that it really has to be one or the other -- I picked Lex because he seemed like a fun character to play. I picked GL because he seemed like a solid character than can handle most of the cast. Now I'm having fun playing both of them and I never really feel I'm at a loss.

If I'd said "I can only play Lex" I'd have felt a bit outmatched in some circumstances, and if I said "I can only play Green Lantern" then I'd have missed out on the fun of playing Lex.

I'm not one of those people that can become good playing 5 characters at a time.. But 2 is manageable. And after playing GL it turned out that he was so much fun, that I'm playing him more than anything.

You are sorta right sorta wrong on the 5/5 matchup comparison OP. People get excited for broken stuff, but people become obsessed with good games.

Closest you'll come to 5/5 matchups across the board in a fighter is likely KoF 13 but its still not that level no matter how amazingly balanced it is. Its got its top dogs, it's amazing moves that get rampant usage, and matchups will make some better at stuff than others so the 3 man survival style of teams balance that out for the most part. Most balanced fighter out there and even its not gonna be able to say its 5/5 across the board...everyone just has great options, great meter play and great mobility.

That said its got a huge learning curve on its combos given the input difficulty and the strictest timing I've ever seen (time it wrong you go from 26% combo to 20% to possibly dropping it and its not just timing its position on some moves that determine this.)

So what happens? High entry level barrier to the game, plus incredibly close matchups means no way to cheese it. There are a TON of players but here in America I can't find a scene for it. Too much love for games folks can "get" and find a good character easily like Marvel. However, everywhere else this game has a HUGE fanbase and its well loved.

The 5/5 talk is sort of a mixed bag. Folks who like good games would be all over it and then some, folks who just like hype shenanigans to fawn over wont. 50-50 split there. Its why you dont see much overlap between KOF communities and Marvel communities. Two different types of FGC.

In any kind of competitive game whether it be a fighter, a moba or some other genre with different character choices my approach is always the same. I pick the character I have the most fun loosing with. This is the best way to enjoy the game, get better at it and generally have a good time. Do I get angry sometimes? Sure although rarely. Do I get angry at my character choice? Never. I get angry at myself because I could have played better or made better choices. People tend to choose characters they have the most fun winning with but that's the recipe for frustration. Loosing is already kind of a downer so making it worse by picking a character you only like winning with is a very bad idea indeed.

I think a mixture of fun/seriousness is required to really enjoy a fighting game.

I've always gravitated towards characters that spoke to me for some reason other than their high/low mix up potential or frame advantage on block. Vega was never a top-tier character in SSFIV, but I still stuck with the psychopath because I just loved the idea of playing as a flamboyant Spanish ninja.

But at the same time, I never wanted to be a low-tier martyr. As much as I liked the idea of Hakan I never stuck with him because I didn't think the idea of having to put in 3x the effort and work to win a "even" match-up as a Yun or Akuma player was anything that resembled "fun".

For me anyway, I have to love the character I'm playing AND have a chance to win. A mixture of emotional investment/practicality. I can't just pick up some dipshit like Spencer just because he's a great anchor character in Marvel, but at the same time I'm not going to put myself at a horrible disadvantage every single match by insisting on using Tron on every team.

I like Lex in this game because big stompy robots sing to my heart and I don't think he is totally a lost-cause yet (give it a few months). But I'm still gonna lobby for buffs and balancing out his worst match-ups, just because he's a cool character doesn't mean I'm okay with perpetually losing due to intrinsic balance issues.

It's weird. The rage quitters who send messages, rant, rave, and curse as they get bodied have me shaking my head. We've all been bodied by better players. It's not fun. We're all competitive. I always ask myself what did I do wrong, what can I do to avoid doing that, and how can I get better. I'll gladly take losing 7 out of 10 matches if I come out of it a better player. I don't give a rats about how immaculate my hero card looks. Do players on this forum even take those statistics seriously?

I personally never choose my mains based on tiers. It's all about play styles for me. I've never gravitated towards grapplers or larger characters. I don't have ambitions of playing in tournaments. I simply want to be part of the community, a great player, and someone a player can send an invite out for a competitive match.

Someone should get help if Injustice works them up to the point he or she throws their controller at the TV in frustration as their blood pressure continues to rise. :)

Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend is the closest thing to complete balance out there. CP will be more balanced.

Wish NRS would take some tips on ASW when it comes to balance. Every character should feel OP in Injustice, I think thats what they are going to try and go for though with this whole buffing talk.

Playing: Injustice, Persona, Blazblue, and MK
Games are made to be played (and to be purchased for moar moneyz). That's it.

They can be played however or for whatever reason people want. I play fighting games to win. How do I do this? By getting better, going more in depth with the game, understanding match ups, gaining more experience, learning more about my character other characters, etc and that makes the game a lot more fun FOR ME. Many people have their own ways of having fun, especially if it means picking a "win character" or picking a character a that they just feel comfortable with. DEAL WITH IT. Oh, and I can never stop being a character loyalist lol. If the character I like ends up being top tier/high tier, yay for me. If not, then challenge accepted, I like figuring out bad match ups/dealing with cons. It actually makes things more interesting and I feel a bit better about myself repping a crap character and winning (I do this without bitching about my character or use my character as an excuse for losing). :D

It's just not the case here in Injustice. I got lucky. lol

Kinda off topic:

I hate when people tell me how I should play a game. Usually for fun.

"Play the game how it's supposed to be played."

Bitch, let us play the game how we want to play it.

/stupid rant

Aquaman is dead lel
For me winning is the most fun in fighting games, especially against good players, however tier-whoring isn't my style so I'm pretty happy about Aquaman being good. :3

This is a competitive gaming forum. We (at least most of us) play to win. We gain our enjoyment from working hard to win, giving ourselves the best oppurtunity to win, and acheiving that goal. Not from playing a certain character who is trash at the highest possible level (not saying bane is trash, but I think we can establish he is no where near Aquaman) and losing in the name of "fun". If thats what you want to do, then thats cool, and it doesn't make you any less of a gamer or a person or whatever, but you are in the wrong place and are in the minority here. Well I don't know, maybe you won't be, there are a lot of new members with that mentality it seems haha.
You don't have to tier whore to be a competitive player.

Rampage254

Ayy Lmao
The only thing I agree with what that guy said in the video was that inputs came out faster in MK, because MK didn't have input delay like Injustice does. Everything else I agree with what the OP said.

I don't have fun losing and getting beat by zoning but I do have fun when I win so I play superman. And let me tell you it's a blast

Some people's enjoyment comes purely from winning. Even if it means using lame ass tactics. Deathstroke and Superman dick riders especially. I tried using them both but found them really boring. I guess they get a kick out of pissing people off with lame tactics. Says more about them than anything.
Lol you mad

The same thing applied for Mortal Kombat.
Use the character you want to use, whether it be to win or to have fun.

But the moment people say Opponent A is only winning because they use High Tier characters or Opponent B is losing because they use low tier characters really irritates me.

A win is a win.
A loss is a loss.

I only play female characters, I have fun with them lol.
People complaining about high tier characters should just pick them up then.

<--mfw I already liked NW's playstyle the moment he was released, and genuinely love playing as him, and he is really good in this game.

Life's good when you have Dick.

Simple solution is to main the character you love, low tier or not, then have a better character as a backup or one that covers your mains bad matchups. I main flash but sometimes i get ssalty about some matchups then i whip out aquaman or GL.

Get over here!
Yeah. It is annoying that everyone picks the best. I loved Kabal as a character... he turned out to be Kabal tier... so I stopped playing with him. The same thing is happening in Injustice. I love Batman, Aquaman, and Deathstroke... but I don't really want to play them just because everyone is abusing them... sad. :16Bit
