How to rollback for wake up

Some opponents adapt to auto slides (my reptile) as my wake up and I'd like to do roll backwards instead to give me space.

How do you perform a roll back for a wake up option?

my timing may suck but i have not been able to get it to work consistently

As soon as your character hits the ground just hit toward or away and any attack button. You can opt to do nothing and have a normal wake-up or you can hold Block for a delayed recovery.

to quick roll you hit any button or direction when you hit the ground, you can also delay wakeup by holding down and then downback when you want to roll.
