What's new

Hello from 916. Need your opinion on how to "train" properly.

Hello from Sactown.
Old school gamer here who's never jumped properly into 2d fighting games.

I watch alot of Jtv streams so I understand the mechanics of the games, doing it is another issue. I've just dabbled with SSF4 and never really learned anything beyond mashing a few special moves. In the middle of fight it all goes out the window for me.

My question is, how do you approach learning a character in MK?

I'm looking for exact things you do? Do you go into training and repeat a 4-5 string combo till it's in muscle memory? I'm hoping for someone to give me an exact regiment to follow for a bit so I can get to the point where it clicks.

I assume the speed of the game slows down alot once you get to that point.

Thanks for reading.

Welcome to TYM man, it really depends on your style. If you want a good melee guy pick Cage, Kung Lao someone like that. Zoning? Reptile, Noob, Ermac. All around? Scorpion, Kung Lao, Kitana.

You really have to go experiment at your own pace :)

Ya I'm past that point. I've already decided to learn with Cage. My question is how to do go about learning the game. How and what do you practice?

Well, depending where you live you can arrange to hang with others offline near you/same area or you can spar with someone online it can't hurt(unless the lag is unbearable) there's guides on here you can look into, talk to other cage players and I'd recommend playing other good Cage players. One of them is on here named Johnbee24, his GT. He's got a great Cage, I'd recommend playing, talking to him. Very nice guy. :)

What MKF30 said is pretty much what you should do. Though if you want to start practicing the character, I usually do a 5-10 minute training on the following things:
dash blocking
combo strings (I don't need to do them anymore since they are jacked into my brain ^^)
fancy combos that shouldn't work
Setting the dummy on block and doing a string over and over for around 4 times in a succession.

Ya I'd love to sit down and pick the brain of some players. So many questions.

Made one day Silent1 will host a tourny, I'm 15 mins from his area.

What worked for me with SF4 was picking a character with a simple, preferably defensive strategy. For ex, I used Guile. You always charge down and back, flash kick on jump ins, and toss sonic booms for pressure. All the trials in capcom fighters really helps too. The reason I suggest defensive players is because its about REACTING. You have to be a confident player to go in and apply pressure, and that's when you forget all those great combos you perfected in training mode.

MK is different because of the string combos, no need to work the muscle memory really. Its more about learning what's safe. Thankfully we have these great tom brady guides (in brady we trust) and they provide a great start to anyones strategy. Id recommend sub zero or reptile. But really whoever you personally "feel" is a good place to start. Go through all the combos listed in the game, then see which ones you can cancel into specials. See what the most damage you can get in one combo is (juggle juggle!) THEN read up on strategy, see if the combos you figured out appear as key combos.

And that's my 2 cents

also practice mixing strings up, and think of setups in your head...
kinda like when i practice bball, i imagine theres someone guarding me or w/e... yadadamayn

edit: also i use cage too, so if youre on psn add me. i live in da bay so hopefully connection would be good.l

Hey man. There is a decent scene in the Sac/Davis area, and everyone is hella cool. There are tourneys every Wednesday at Drom's Comics in Davis, and there are tourneys every month in Elk Grove. Add me in PSN and we can train. I mostly use Sub, but im picking up Cage too.

Hi. Where in EG do they hold the MK tournies?

I rememeber there was a SF4 get together at The City Coffeehouse & Cafe, but they've since gone out of business.

Tapioca Express. I haven't been out there a lot because I live in Rocklin, but all the FG players go there is Sac and Davis. Everyone is super cool and will help you out.

Ah damn Rocklin, you're at the other end of town.

Thanks for the info. Is there a site with the schedule for the EG meets?

Nevermind. They are doing AE and mvc3 there. They don't have time for a 3rd game. You should check the Pacific North Region Thread at shoryuken.com for meetups. I'm going to setup something at a comic book store in citrus heights soon. I have your PSN ID, so I can keep you informed.
