Resets

This may be a stupid question to most on here but can anyone explain to me what resets are exactly. Or at least point me to a site or something that would help me understand what they do. The only thing I know is they vary from character to character.

Generally speaking in fighting games, it is ending a juggle/air combo early with something that'll put the opponent in a standing state (or in the case of an aerial game like MvC, any comboable state) instead of a knockdown state as standard combo enders do. This leads to a mixup of some sort which may in turn lead into another combo. Very powerful momentum tool.

MK9 has a few characters (Such as Cyrax, Smoke) who can "reset" the combo counter in a way that's completely guaranteed instead of the result of a mixup, and in turn leads to ridiculous damage because that also resets damage scaling.

You'll likely see it used in both manners around here, being an MK site (although hopefully the latter won't apply to Injustice at all).

Standing resets like Cage's leave you standing and usually open to pressure, in Cage's case a free block string.

Damage resets like Cyrax's reset the combo and let him do another without damage scaling.

Resets, in normal fighting game terms, are meant to describe a situation where you (usually) cut a combo short, reducing your damage output and at the same time put your opponent in a situation where they must make a guess (high/low mixup, strike/throw mixup) allowing you to continue damage and/or pressure. If they guess wrong after being reset, you usually get another full combo.

In MK9 terms, resets are used to describe a situation where you end a combo, then start a new, (usually) inescapable combo with reset damage scaling and gravity...Cyrax and Smoke do this to obtain their high damage output making them so deadly.

Ok. In mk9 I usually used sektors flame thrower at the end of his combos. Is that considered a reset? Or is that something else entirely.

The idea behind normal, balanced resets, is that you sacrifice raw damage on the chance of dealing more damage if you guess right, or the opponent guesses wrong. It's a risk/reward element. Do I go ahead and complete the full combo for full guaranteed damage, or go for a resest, doing lesser guaranteed damage, but hoping it pays off to deal even more than the full combo would.

the other form of reset tis silly and should not be mentioned.
