Advice on switching internet providers?

Hello TYM! To keep a long story short, my internet ever since vanilla MK9 has been way below average. On Speedtest, its definitely cringeworthy to look at. Though its been a wildcard in terms of online lag (sometimes it works as if I feel no lag, other times its atrocious), I need to change my internet ASAP come Injustice.

This is my first time doing independent shopping for internet so I have no idea where to begin nor do I know which providers are known to have fantastic upload/download speeds.

I would really appreciate some advice on this. My location is in Los Angeles (or more specifically, Glendale) California if that makes a huge difference in terms of my options and my price range would pretty much be no more than $70-80 dollars a month. Thanks for advice once again!

How's it going man! I'm from Glendale, California. It's a pretty crowded part. I'm downloading a bunch of stuff right now so a speedtest post right now would be skewed, but on average it's about 1.5 down and less than 1 up. (Not completely accurate, but in no way is it better than that).

Same. This city has a shitty internet infrastructure.
I've heard :(. But do you by any chance know what are still some solid options in our area (hoping me living on the border of La Crescenta makes a difference), even if the price is aforementioned around 70+ a month?

damn lol that's strange i live in the east coast lol i suggest 3 things, direct connect using a cat6 cable, or a router thats fast.
http://www.amazon.com/C2G-Cables-31342-Snagless-Meters/dp/B0002JFOIW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1365386369&sr=8-2&keywords=cat6+cable
make sure all of your cables are this one here, if you have even one shitty cable from the 80's it will screw with your entire network. direct connect to the modem is your best best, if you cant because you live with oterh people, run a 100ft long cable through the house, that what i do, i get 50mbps download 6mbps upload. the best internet for upload is verizon fios, if you want beast ass connection they are the best, your download speed isnt the issue, its you upload. as long as your upload is over 4mbps you can play very good games with people across the continent, like us :) if verizon isn't in your area than try find the fastest upload from all the isp's in your area. you can survive with 20mpbs download, but if you had a 10mbps upload.....damn bro you gonna be good online.

Thanks so much man! I'll be doing a lot of research on this stuff before IGAU. From it seems the entire wiring at my house needs a complete overhaul to begin with.

I have comcast and get 20 down and 5 up. Never have a problem playing online in any game minus MK (doesn't matter how good your connection is).

Might I suggest looking into that Netzero 4g hot spot thing? I don't know how much the data plans are but I believe 4G is somewhere around my speeds.

EDIT. I just looked up their plans. Looks like they have a 4GB data plan for $50 a month. I'm not a computer or Internet expert so maybe someone else can chime in and give some more detail.

I had the same sort of problem, as can be seen here:

http://www.testyourmight.com/threads/calling-all-technical-experts-on-tym.28536/

Ever since I first got Internet service from Cox Cable two years ago (okay, my mother got it for us, I'm dependent at the moment), it just started dropping in quality little by little throughout the years. It has now gotten to the point of ridiculous during the past few months. Our router just drops our connection randomly and I can't even maintain a stream anymore, let alone play online.

I'm about to start calling our ISP tomorrow and bitch them out good till they pull their heads out of their asses and straighten this up. If they don't, we'll need to switch providers. I'm looking at Comcast at the moment. My bro Brok (he's from Indiana) gave me some excellent input on their service. Does anyone else here use Comcast and find it reliable?

I use comcast and it is phenomenal. I never have any problems with if cutting in or out or dropping speeds.

I also use the NetGear N900 router. I consistently get 20mb down and 5mb up throughout my whole house whether its on my iPhone, laptop, second Xbox in the family room.

If the woman wants to watch something on Netflix in the living room (Wifi) and I want to play MK, Gears, or BF I never have a problem.

They are a bit pricey even with the package deal ($200 a month for phone, cable, and Internet) but its worth it for all my study, gaming, and adult entertainment needs.

Well, we have no house phone since we've got cell phones, so our current package doesn't come with that. We also don't need cable TV since we stream our shows through devices called Roku (Google it, it's godlike), so cable's out of the equation, too. All we need is a solid Internet source. I hope Comcast allows us to just get the Internet and drop the other two options.

I just googled that and it looks like you can get just the Internet but it will cost you an extra $5 or $10 a month.

Oh, and I did look into the Roku awhile ago and was going to get one for our living room but decided to just get a 4GB 360 because the only thing the woman was interested in was Greys Anatomy and I figured I could always use it to beat the shit of family/friends that come over.

What's the Comcast Internet typically priced at by itself?

When I first got it back in 2006, they had a special running for $19.99 a month for one year. I did have their TV service at the time though.

Now by itself is $52.00 a month on my bill.

They like to increase the bill frequently. When I got their triple play it was $99 a month for six months, after that it jumped up to $150, $160, 180, etc.

And when I called them to tell them I wanted to cut off the phone I got some half assed response that it would still cost the same if I wasn't on the triple play package so I just said screw it and hung up the phone and just gonna deal with it until FIOS comes around someday or until I move for grad school to an area that has it.

Comcast does have good service and good technical support from my experience so I guess it's a trade off.

Whoa, the bolded statement gives me concern. That shouldn't even be allowed. ;_;

Okay...let's hope my call to the ISP tomorrow goes well.

I'm right there with ya.

Long as I don't get, "I'm sorry sir. 1.5 down is the best we can offer you in your location", IGAU here I come.
