Austin, TX MK

Hi, I'm currently the #1 tournament player in Austin for this game (lol). I run an arcade, and made a totally sweet head to head arcade setup for this game just to give it a chance in the competitive scene here. The only locals I know playing the game at a competitive level right now are JC Denton, JDR and Jonlo.

I haven't played anyone else that knows what they're doing yet, but come to Arcade UFO any time and I will play MK with you. I work there Sun-Thurs from open to 8pm, and also try to be there at least a little bit on Thursday/Friday nights just to play. Friday night is generally the best time to go for competition.

http://www.arcadeufo.com/

The cost to play on the machine is 1 token for 2 minutes, which is more than enough for a game if you know what you're doing. Tokens are less than 25c each if you spend $10 or more. I am no mathematician, but I think it's a totally sweet deal for the best offline competition in the area.

Note, I don't play fighting games online. If you have gatherings, you can post about that here too. But you really should come to the arcade! If we don't build a decent scene for it, I'll have to take the game out when Blazblue CS2 and/or TTT2 comes out D:

We'll start having tournaments if enough people play. Gogogo!

There are no pad ports on this game. The button layout if you're learning on a stick at home is:

FP BLK BP
FK TAG BK

surprised it's not

fp bp
fk bk blk

since that's what default is for a TE. have i been playing wrong this whole time? :throwcomputer:

The default layout is meant for pads. The layout on both the PDP stick and The Mortal Kombat top for TE fightsticks is like our layout, punches on top and kicks on bottom with block in the middle. This also most closely resembles the layout of older MK arcade games.

The worst thing about your layout is it puts Block, the most important button, in an area that only your ring and pinky fingers can reach comfortably. Since block is the most used button by a large margin, you ideally want it in a place where your thumb, index or middle finger can reach it comfortably.

Even if you never played at the arcade, I think
<> fp bp
blk fk bk

would be a much better layout.

I've been playing

fp bp
fk blk bk

on my TE S. But I'm sure I could probably adjust whenever I happen to make it to UFO.. That's cool that you got that setup there.

fubarduck, I think your invite is a great idea but we have an arcade setup in South Austin that has 2 MK TE sticks. Let's game soon, because you aren't the best player in Austin.

Yep. That was a callout. Dang. Reminds me of the old days in Tekken Tag.

I like it.

Wouldn't your layout make doing xrays harder? Since on the default layout like the other guy says (same one I use) all you have to do is press the 3 bottom buttons for xray. And your seems to be uncoftable

Well I appreciate the love guys. Obviously I run a business full time and I don't play FGs 24/7 so it is really inconvenient for me to go out of my way to play games, especially when the top players (at least for every other game, since I play everything) already play at the arcade. And of course, if you guys who proclaim you are great at the game never come and play at UFO, I have to take it out and the community remains forever separated.

I know I'm not that strong at the game right now, and I certainly wasn't expecting to beat JOP this weekend. We played 2nd match of winners and he bodied me as expected, then I worked my way back out of the loser's bracket pretty easily. I ended up taking 3rd, with the guy that beat me calling me a "fucking scrub". I acknowledged that and shook his hand.

I actually don't try to create rivalries, but I know my level and I always try to steadily improve. I think if I played the game really seriously for a few months, I might be able to hang with the players that have been playing the game months before it came out.

I will say though that until you guys can perform at tournaments, you're just casual kings. I was joking in the first post, but technically, I am the best tournament player in Austin right now (1st and 3rd in both big Texas MK events). Clearly you guys don't ever have to come to the arcade, but anyone who knows me will tell you that I try really hard to unite everybody and I would be sad if MK players remained separated in Austin.

I don't even really like grudge matches (I have never played or asked for a money match) but if you guys who think you are great come to UFO, I will do a first to five with you for free and record/stream it.

And of course if you guys have any other suggestions I will take them into consideration. I still think it's hard to beat less than a quarter a game, when most of us payed 50 cents to play MK2 and MK3/UMK3 growing up. I have already been training a lot of UFO regulars at the game, and the competition will be good.

And no, I wasn't salty after losing. I shook the 2nd place winner's hand after he talked shit straight to my face. I have never had an attitude in games, or thrown a tantrum, or not shaken a players hand. Just always try my best.

I'm not going to pay to play a game I paid for at the midnight release. If you want to play locally or online then let's do this. It's all about fun though, but saying you're the best in a town is kinda pushing it. I know of a few dudes in the area who are pretty damn good, and we all would love to play with your crew.

Saying I'm the best MK tournament player in town isn't pushing it, it is a fact based on empirical results that I am #1 Austin tournament player. If you want to change that, you have to actually play in a tournament and place higher than me. I agree it's all about fun, but I don't have fun going to a stranger's house to body them or playing a game online with shit netcode.

When you play fighting games at an arcade, you are not paying to "play a game you already paid for". You are paying to play against great competition in a public place, without restrictions like what time to meet and who is allowed to play at your crib. If you don't want to pay for Starbucks, you can keep making Folgers at home.

I don't play online, so unfortunately it doesn't look like we'll ever get to play. I really hope that's enough for you to level up your game, because I'd like to see this city get somewhere. If you ever change your mind, I'm not going anywhere.

I would like to apologize again for doing that at the tourny. It was uncalled for - I was just hot for no reason. You are nothing but respectful. If you ever want to rematch me. I will gladly accept for you to make me quiet.

Cat.... update your profile please with your 360 gt. It seems you see yourself as a good player but values online play... silly. I am from San Antonio. Add me and we will play soon. I myself, like Fubar hate online but I am stuck with that except once a week when we have gatherings.

I play a variety of characters for the time being.

I need to go up there more to play against Austin more. Cant have you guys losing to THAT kind of kano playing. lol

as for the UFO layout, its alright, I dont like it myself (since the X-ray input is odd). I prefer the default, but I can respect the decision behind it.

Alright will do. And I don't take online seriously I rarely play it because the lag is so bad. I'll add you haven't had time this weekend has been busy for me. I mostly play offline with my brother. We will be at comicpalooza for sure. And congrats to fubar on making 4th place in pdp. I was disappointed in the tournament. Had no hype. I guess using those sticks must of sucked for everyone. Perfect legend looked mad salty.
