That wasn't exactly solid evidence at the time because of people saying HEY HEY HEY SHAO KHAN HAD A HELMET AVATAR ITEM...

But with the Dutch interview confirming final boss being a playable character that may as well have been confirmation anyway.

I was pretty sure by the time Raven was announced (if not sooner), I was pretty certain Ares and Black Adam were both playable anyhow (being the only characters ever mentioned in any article remaining unconfirmed).

Mods keep taking down the screencaps, but they are around somewhere. Basically, Ares is confirmed, and he is a hard zoner.

Its not that they doubt him. Its that they want someone they like in.

If there are 24 characters, it means a full roster. So, in order to get MMH in the main cast, they need to knock a guy off in their minds. Ares and Killer frost were both the two who recently were victims of this. Will happen till an OFFICIAL OFFICIAL confirmation happens.
