I'm having Internet issues

Ok so I upgraded my internet service with comcast to the 50 mbps nonsense so that I could just have an easier time using my internet, and seeing how I have two roomates it won't be that pricy. Well when I got the modem and had it activated I went ahead and did a speed test on my PS3, and it told me my DL Speed was like 14mbps and the UL was like 3mbps. So I did a speed test on my computer a couple of times and it told me it was in the 25-30 range for DL and 8ish for UL. So I called up Comcast and told them the problem and they said they fixed it this time around. SO I go and do all the tests again on the PS3 and I'm still getting the same speeds. Is this just my console lying to me or should I have someone come to my apartment and check out my setup? I just don't want to be paying for this service if I'm not going to get the full benefit of it.

Keep in mind that in an apartment complex, you are most likely going to see some bottlenecks during peak hours since you are obviously going to be sharing the line from the node to the building(s) with many other tenants. However, the kind of slow-down you are seeing is a bit abnormal. I would, like ben said, do a test from your PC, phone over WiFi or anything but the PS3. I can never get consistent results from its test. Also, are you hard wired?

Yeah I thought that was what it might've been at first but I don't think I've ever seen the DL speed get over 30. I hardwire the PS3 yeah.

it IS possible that your actual modem doesn't support the speed you are paying for. Same thing happened to my dad. He has a 60Mbps package from charter and was running throttled to 30 for the longest time due to the modem. He only found out when he looked at his bill and saw that he was paying for 60 and was like :confused:. Just another thing to consider.

Edit, just saw that you got a new modem with the package. my bad

First off, as said a bunch of times, the PS3 is a TERRIBLE way to test your connection. However, here is where internet providers get you; while they advertise 50mbs they are saying to THE BOX (distribution center for a general vicinity). The circuit box is normally located at the end of your block or near the main entrance of your apartment complex. Depending on what type of cable (Fiber Optic, Copper, ect.) is being used to carry your signal will ultimately determine the speed of your UL/DL. This is a HUGE problem a lot of places in Texas have.

They actually gave me the wrong modem at first and I had to get a replacement, but then it was supposedly the right one. I'm actually about to go home right now for lunch, so I guess I'll do a test before I head back in to work.

This right here is why i HATE internet in apartment complexes. Unless its FiOS(they run gdlk infrastructure in complexes),there is almost always an element of uncertainty. There are so many more variables in the mix and in teh physical layer of the network that it can really be frustrating

It is almost ALWAY better to just go to BB and buy a modem....

The D/U speeds reported by PS3 are dumb. I get consistent 30/5 speeds on my computer and the PS3 shows like 12 and 3, however when I upgraded my service I did notice a better connection with some people. I wouldn't worry about it.

I ended up buying my own modem Moto SB6141 because TWC started charging a lease fee with their modems. I am glad I did because the speeds I get are completely consistent now.
