What's new

3 year old car wont start, making odd noises. video included. help?

As the title says. Pretty new car. I take very good care of it, do regular maintenance, change the oil often... i dunno whats wrong. Attaching a quick vid I took, hopefully you can hear the noises the car's making. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what's wrong so I know how to fix it/what to tell a mechanic?

i'm hoping it's just froze cause it's cold as fuck outside :(

lol. It's your battery. Get a jump, the cold weather probably messed with it. Same thing happened to me recently. Lights came on and everything but wouldn't turn over.

It's your batter more than likely bro.

Always make sure to let your car warm up for 45 seconds for a minuet, really all it needs is 20 seconds for the oil to run to the engine etc.
When it's cold, don't start your and take off in 5-10 seconds.
Let it warm up to avoid having problems like these or even more serious ones.

Try and get a jump as tottery stated.

I don't understand how it can be the battery if all the interior lights still work? Or could it just be that it's discharged enough it can't generate enough power to start the engine, but there's enough residual charge there for it to operate the interior electronics... Meh. I guess that's exactly what's happening so yeah probably just need a jump and i'll be on my way. I hope.

Too bad all these new cars put that stupid ass fucking plastic all over your motor so even if you pop the hood you gotta unscrew shit just to get to your battery.

And man, if I seriously couldn't just identify that my battery in my car is dead, i'm scared for what other really basic life shit I should know that I don't D:

Yeah, I'm aware of letting it run, i was going outside to start it up before I got ready to head out. Bummer, guess I'm ordering chinese for delivery tonight

Nice Mazda 3. Most likely it's your battery. You may need to jump start it to get it to work. If all else fails, try adding antifreeze to prevent the battery from dying, because the cold weather does that to em lol.

Check your battery terminals. Make sure they are on real tight and clean away any corrosion. Also, try pumping the gas pedal as you are turning the engine over. Make sure you are in park fully, maybe switch to N then back to P.

I'll have a look when it warms up outside. Pumping the gas did nothing, didnt wanna try too much and flood the engine. I drive stick so no park. Clutch isn't the issue though, heh

As a technician, I'm hoping it might be your batteries. That's always the first thing you check on something that wont start. Check the terminals (Positive and Negative) to see if you're getting proper voltage. You'll need a multimeter for that. If you're getting correct voltage, check the starter. I'm HVAC. So, I don't work on vehicles, but everything mechanical works pretty much the same way.

Well this is piling on at this point basically, but, yes, that does indeed look like a battery.

As for why the lights can still come on if the battery is the issue....thats because the amount of juice required to start the car, is much higher than the amount of juice taken to turn on the lights, etc. (Juice being a technical term, of course).

Odds are the cold weather caused an issue. Quite common.
A lot of times a jump, and you will be good to go.
There are other things that a mechanic can test for, and obviously anyone getting to physically go over your car can tell you more than we can, but, from your vid, a jump is probably what the doctor ordered.

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck! I'm in Chicago so during the winter, I see this all the time. Sucks!

I have battery problems with my car. You can use one of those... I don't know what you call them, but they serve to test if the battery is dead or not. A car will usually start regardless of how severe its problem is, as long as power is provided.

You can jump start a 'stick' drive by putting it into second gear, having some mates push the car, then quickly lifting your foot off the clutch and turning the ignition once you've got some momentum.

Never pump the gas in a fuel injected vehicle while turning it over, you will do nothing but harm and it won't help start it. Sometimes you just get shitty batterys, i can't watch the video from where I am, but if thats the case and your car is that new it might still be under warrenty or you may just need a new one.

And yes, it will power all yer lights and shit sometimes but not be able to turn over the engine.

If it's not turning the engine over at all it could be the starter as well, that can be a little costly, and honestly in those newer vehicles theres a number of problems it could be,

Yea I'm getting a battery tomorrow hopefully that's all that's wrong. I haven't started my baby up for a week, she must be so cold outside :(

Sometimes the battery has enough juice for the lights and just not enough to start the car. The best way to determine if the problem is your battery is to have someone try to crank the car, and to listen for the starter to turn. If you hear a clicking sound then the starter is turning over. If that is turning over, but you aren't getting any juice then most likely it's the battery. If you are consistently having problems with the battery not being charged then your alternator is going bad. If you need to check that Advanced Auto Parts will check that out for free. They will check your battery to see if you could possibly have dead cells in it as well. hope this helps
