Can you defend yourself against a 50/50 mixup?

I'm always getting blown up by good players using characters like Scorpion or Kung Lao.

Also can anyone go into the logic behind 50/50's in fighting games in general and how they manage to keep a game balanced?

When you compete, you metaphorically send yourself into the other persons thoughts (and vice-versa),
where you both become detectives of each others plans and ideas.
You become super associated with their tendencies, patterns, and favorites.

You also begin to note what will happen if their plan succeeds or fails *wink wink thread title hint hint*

Against Kung Lao, I can defend rather easily. Scorpion and Freddy however.......

Those hellspawns just don't give me a break.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

So I should block low first then quickly switch to high, so either both low or mid attacks are blocked? So like when Scorpion is doing his leg kick (hits low) or downward sword strike (hits mid) from combo. If that's what you mean then maybe I just need to get the timing down better.

They're called 50/50s for a reason. You have a 50% chance of guessing right, and a 50% chance of guessing wrong. Either Scorpion will do his overhead or low starter. If you guess wrong, you eat a combo. If you guess right, Scorpion gets fucked up.

If the character has a 50/50 that is not punishable, they're still usually left at a disadvantage unless they substitute with a less damaging combo to remain safe.

And then there's Kenshi...

Heres a little more help in clearer fashion:

-if they have a breaker, theyre more likely to do something risky/unsafe

-they could be conditioning you to block a certain way. EX: Lots of low pokes, then an OH

-if they dont have the life lead or are about to lose, theyre more likely to do something risky

-For 50/50 specials: they likely want you to be aware of that option so that they can abuse their blockstrings and pressure further.

Nothing is certain in 50/50s. Youll always have to guess. These are just some clues.

That only works if the move is slow enough. Something like Liu Kang's F3 or Quan Chi's U3 you can switch stances on reaction.
Something like Scorpion's B2 you cannot switch on reaction. You need to be standing when he does it or you get hit.

Sorry to ask but I'm just trying to figure out how strategy is still involved if something becomes a guessing game. Can you give me an example of how a game like this remains balanced with 50/50's. I play mostly Kabal, so most of what I've learned has come from him.

Its balanced because of how unsafe most of them are. Take Scorpion for example. He guesses right, he gets a combo and another guess. He guesses wrong, and he's up shits creek without a paddle.

Scorpion can be fuzzy guarded committing to low and tapping release because his low kick is several frames faster and the overhead is telegraphed.

but to comment on the OP there is no true way to defend vs 50/50s thats why they are 50/50s its a guessing game. either try to keep them out or have meter to break it if it leads to a full combo.

If there is such a huge gap between the overhead and low, then fuzzy guarding works perfectly. If it's like Scorp's, then good luck.

you could just pick standing or crouching and block that way every time... I mean, hey, you have a 50/50 shot at being right! LOL
