To RUNE or not to RUNE?

Hi all,

I main Sheeva and Quan Chi, but I was just curious and wanted to ask, "Do you think it's possible to play Quan Chi successfully and win without catching your opponent in the Rune trap?" I for one can do a full 37% midscreen combo with ease playing Quan Chi and I use the EX runes as a deterant and do rather decent. Has anyone else had luck playing him like this? BTW the comobo is jump in with 2, b1,2 > Trance (or EX Trance to stop the breaker), jump in with 2, b1,2, F1,2,1

probably not THAT bad.. but still very damn bad, he would never win in high level matches without it

I did fine with Quan prior to knowing about the rune trap......but I recommend you use all the tools your character has in their arsenal to win.

To rune or not to rune, that is the question. Whether tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous combos....ok, I'm done. And no, he does not need the rune trap to win.

The rune trap is broken and it is all he has. It is very hard to win without it. Use it as much as you can in rounds 1 and 3 or 2 if you lost the first. And your basic combo midscreen should be b21 dash b21 dash b11 trance wiffed close rune, wiffed trance, 11 skydrop. You are a new member and you have a lot to learn about quan. I can help you a lot if you want. I would also highly recommend watching Under_The_Mayo 's quan vids.

Why would you want to limit yourself by not using the rune trap? Sure you can win some rounds and matches without it. But it gives him great comeback potential. It would be in your best interest to learn it and use it.

Edit: If sub-zero had a rune trap, you bet your ass I'd use it.

If you don't use the rune-trap, you can't possibly Woolay.

If Quan doesn't use it, he can't win at a high level. Sure, you can beat some scrub online that doesn't know the MU, or isn't very experienced with the game without it. But try fighting anyone who's worth their weight in salt at this game, and you'll quickly find how useless Quan is without it.

Best learn to respect your characters best tools.

also, its important to keep you mixups going, if have the chance and have little to no meter, try ending your air juggle with u3~skydrop.

It's not that I don't want to use it, it's that in some matches it's VERY hard to get a character like Scorpion or Smoke to caught in the Rune Trap so you have to rely on other ways. I was just curious if anyone thought Quan was capable of just fighting the "good" fight straight up and winning?

Yea I saw those videos, but I eman with the high damage super easy combos Quan has don't you guys think he has good potential otherwise? O' if you wanta hit me up on PSN my PSN name is Grave_Intent we can play some games and practice.

Quan is worst than kano without the rune trap. Quan combos in general are pretty easy, so you might as well just do the max damage ones. I'm xbox only sorry.

If u want no metter go for jip, b2,1 dash b2,1 dash b1,1~trance jip/metter build b3,1+2 slight dash uppercut

Rune trap should be used whenever it will give you an advantage, either for a life-lead, a victory, to make use of full meter, for a mix-up, or come-back. Probably more options too.

tl;dr use it responsibly.
