I was told to post my tournament report on the MK thread for some of my friends who aren't on Facebook. This was a local Gamestop tournament with about 25 people.

Drinking from the Deadguy Ale- Mortal Kombat Tournament report 1st

For most of my friends in the fighting game community the idea of a tournament report is foreign. However, in the Magic community we love our tournament reports and they are something we enjoy doing. I am writing this report in hope that it catches on and more MN gamers latch on to this idea of a tournament report and use it as a tool to make themselves known. Everyone has a story to tell and I know personally that I love to read the adventures and tales of my friends, especially when they experience success at any level. Games N Go will be starting a Tournament Reports tab on our website at www.gamesngoonline.com. Now on to my report while everything is fresh in my head.

My Thursday started like any other Thursday, my boss, Triet, has been kind and nice enough to set my schedule allowing me to have two solid days off instead of working six days a week. I use this time to spend with my wife and unwind because being a full time student and working full time can be a stressful endeavor. I had a planned Thursday I was going to wake up early hit training room in Mortal Kombat 9 and then grind Magic Online to get ready for this weekend’s Invitational Qualifier. The life of a true grinder as any gamer knows we grind as many tournaments as possible in hopes of glory, but far too often we come up short. While grinding practice mode my friend Rick calls (aka Sonic Boom) and says, “Gene what are you doing today? Just heard that Gamestop is doing a Mortal Kombat tournament today in Brooklyn Park, this would make for a great opportunity to meet new players and do some solid community building.” I then said something along the lines of I would like to go and do what I can to meet more players but I have to see if my wife will let me. We both laugh and go about our day. It just so happens that my wife had plans for the evening and that meant Gene can go out to play!

I show up to the tournament and talked to every asian guy I could fine. I can safely assume that they like fighting games and most likely be some of my toughest competition. I was disappointed to find that the tournament was on 360 and I looked stupid with my PS3 controller. I was also finding while warming up that I could not hit any of my high end combos because the 360 D-pad is horrible. I continued to jump in the air stupidly and get punished. So I walked outside for a little bit and told myself no fancy stuff stick with the basic combos and play smart and tight. Play extremely safe and use the analog sticks not the D pad to execute.

I played Sub Zero the whole tournament and it was a double elimination tournament. Lucky for me I didn’t drop a single match.

1st round Joe playing Reptile:

As soon as I saw that I was playing Reptile it almost put me on tilt. Everyone who has been playing online can see that Reptile’s sixty percent combos are incredibly easy to do and can be frustrating.

Lucky for me, Joe kept jumping into my Ice clone and was only able to hit me with that retarded combo once our whole matches. I do remember on two occasions when he was going to put me away I spammed my X Ray combo and connected to put him away. Rather be lucky than good especially when playing on 360!

2nd Round vs. Darren Liu Kang

Darren and I start our match off with Darren asking me to take it easy on him. I respond you take it easy on me, I am an old man. Look I know I am only 25 but in the world of gaming that’s middle aged.

Things went great for me in my matches. And lucky for me I was able to adjust to their laggy plasma TVs. No EVO monitors were to be found that’s for sure. I make quick work with Darren I was very comfortable with the Sub Zero Liu Kang match up since my Freeze beats his kicks and he was spamming this bicycle kick at predictable times.

3rd Round vs. Joe Kung Lao

One thing I found interesting during the tournament was that everyone in the room was giving me mad props. Many of the people in the room were watching most of my matches. This is mainly because I was wearing my Games N Go Championship T-shirt. People assumed that I was some sort of ringer at GNGC. Little do they know that I am actually a donkey and the reason I have one of these shirts is I am a Games N Go employee and I love to promote my business whenever I can.

I will be the first to admit that I don’t know a thing about the Kung Lao match up and there was at least ten times I should have punished his teleport spam but I continued to leave damage on the table. We went to game 3 in each of our matches and in each of those game three’s I only won because of my lucky X Ray combo.

4th round winners finals vs. Joes brother (forgot his name) playing Raiden

One of the great things about starting first and winning is that you get to watch your opponent’s matches. I saw that I would be playing a Raiden and I saw that every time he would stand up he would doing Riadens charge attack. I knew then that if I just blocked correctly I could punish this with an upper cut. This is what I did every match and was able to keep frozen.

5th round Finals Vs Joes brother Raiden again

Those of you who know about tournaments know that taking the high round to success is the easiest way to win the tournament. Like in Magic, if you just win most of your games you can draw into top 8 in normal brackets if you win all your games you play fewer games and go straight to the winner’s finals. When in this position you also have the privilege of having a match to give because they are double elimination tournaments and your opponents from the loser’s bracket have to actually beat you twice.

Going into this match I felt much more comfortable than my opponent I knew I had a match to give and he didn’t. However the last thing I wanted to do is go to the last round because that gives the momentum to my opponent. I felt comfortable with my Raiden match up but all of our games were extremely tight. They came to who managed X-ray combos the best and who was able to do the most chip damage. Being the lone Games N Go guy and my opponent having Mom, Dad, brother, sister and girlfriend in the room made things very interesting. I felt like Keits at Combo Breaker or a WWE heel. They did the finals on a laggy big screen and everyone was watching. The best thing to do in this type of situation is to clear the mechanism and just play like you would normally. I won in the first match set and relied heavily on Sub Zeros slide and corner combos which are easy to do even on a horrible 360 Dpad.

Overall the tournament was a lot of fun. It’s nice to succeed on enemy territory. Bob and company did a good job running things. I got to meet different players and encourage them to come hang out and I got lots of gamer tags and made new friends which in the end that’s what it’s all about. Hopefully my next tournament win will be at the SCG 50k invitational where I can take home over 10k to my wife and maybe show her why I do the things I do.

Thanks for Reading!

Gene
