Columbus Bar Battles: Gaiden - Columbus, OH - January 22nd, 2011 @ MOMO²

Hello again! MrBlasty and Dandy J are here again, on the road to Bar Battles 4 this Summer. Nope, this isn't it... Bar Battles: Gaiden will be a...fudge it. It's gonna be off the chain once again! The event will be streamed as usual, with commentary by Ailerus and other alcohol-fueled persons from Ohio and the surrounding areas. The stream will be brought to you in part by ScrubQuotes@Twitter. Shoutouts to polarity.

Dec. 20th update - Shit just got real. Things have changed, and we are accommodating in the proper fashion. No surprises there, huh? Here's the lowdown:

  • We are moving the tournament venue to MOMO². I am getting a feeling of déjà vu...I'm sure all of you are familiar with MOMOs by now. Venue info is below, as always.
  • As you probably assumed, the venue cap has been lifted. Space is of no concern. Tell your friends! Tell your family! Tell your kids, tell your wife! Get on the site and register because you don't want to miss this one. Click here to pre-register!
  • The lineup is changing in the interest of time and...interest. BlazBlue, KOF2002UM, RPS, and the 6v6 gauntlet have all been dropped from the official billing. These games (and others) can still happen as side tournaments so please don't suicide, but we are not guaranteeing that they will. In their place we are holding Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike singles and Super Street Fighter IV 3v3 teams (run by Noel 'The Professional' Brown).
  • Justin Wong will be in attendance once again! Here's another chance to have your shot at Justin at the biggest little tournament around. Fugee will be offering a $50 bounty to anyone who can send him to the loser's bracket in 3S, and $100 to whoever can eliminate him!
Dec. 22nd update - We have another special guest to announce -- PR Rog is now confirmed!

Dec. 24th update - Yet another special guest, Flash Metroid will be in attendance!

Pre-Registration - Click here to pre-register!
Just like Bar Battles 3, pre-registration is mandatory, but free. If there's players in your local crew that want to come, make sure you let them know as well. You must pre-register to participate in any tournament, period. Dec. 20th update: Don't worry if you registered before, you don't have to resubmit if you're entering SSF4 teams or 3S.

Once again, we are holding the tournament at MOMO², well-known as the home of Season's Beatings and our venue for Bar Battles 3 last August. There are great food and drinks available, including the MOMOs staple, bubble tea. Alcoholic drinks are also served for those of age (it's called 'bar battles', right?). Please respect the venue -- no outside food or drinks permitted! Keep the Cane's at Cane's.

Here are some hotels close to MOMO's. The Red Roof Inn is the closest (and cheapest I believe).

Rules
In a set, winner keeps same character, loser can switch if they like, unless specified.
If a player pauses during a match or somehow stops gameplay in the following games:
- ST, or UMK3, the opposing player has 2 choices: play the match over from that round, or unpause/whatever and let it rock.
- SF4, T6, 3S, or AH3, the opposing player has 3 choices: Play the match over from the beginning, take a free win, or let it rock.
- MVC2, the opposing player has 2 choices, play the match over from the beginning, or let it rock (encouraged because of DC blue screens, unless shit's real serious).

Game-specific rules
SSF4 - Either player may switch ultras after any match.
ST - Akuma is banned
T6 - 3/5 rounds
AH3 - If the loser switches their character or arcana, the winner can switch their arcana. Boss character is banned? (TBD)
3S - Gill is banned
MVC2 - Cannot have more than one of the same character on a team. No game-breaking bugs, you know what they are.
UMK3 - Anyone can switch characters after any match, standard set is 3/5, all finals 4/7

See you there!

Definitely mame for this one.

Unfortunately the venue (not the same as last time) is much smaller and it would be impossible to get a cab down there without killing someone.

I will be using joy2key for button mapping and pre-installing default setups so we don't have to deal with doing the button mapping dance every single match.

I might also bust out the arcade panel setup for this one.

We will be streaming tonight. Keep an eye on this thread and the stream listed in the first post for the address.

Tourney will start at 5pm and we will try to stream Top 4-8 at least.

More info coming.

There will be marvel, umk, ssfiv, arcana heart 3, and super turbo finals on stream today.

Marvel/umk start at 5pm, super turbo is at 3. So finals for each will be a few hours later.

I think 3S may get a stream too.

Still going. We started late to get a few more people in the bracket.

Derrick Legend, Moses, and Diego still in winners.

Tim and I are in losers.

Stream is a no go due to our late start and the awesomeness that is Super Street Fighter IV.

Sorry for anyone who may have been following.

Matches are being recorded.

Although if you were watching te stream you just saw a few awesome matches of marvel.

Winners final in UMK is Derrck Legend and Moses. Chris Ghaleon is waiting in losers.

Good job LaoShu, my boy from way back! How many players did you get? For whatever reason even though UMK3 is fast it always takes forever to start. Anything recorded?

Dude even the the commentators for the stream were like "fuck SSF4, this has to be the most boring game ever to watch"
I was hoping they would stream some UMK3 but I wasnt surprised they didnt. The "awesomeness" that is SSF4 pretty much dominated the stream.

And Moses takes it. He's been practicing and getting back into playing online apparently and he was on point tonight. Really really solid fundamentals and defense, nobody had an answer for his style.

Derrick Legend lost out in to him in the grand final. He got a little bit of a rhythm with robot smoke towards the end and took a set but wasn't able to reset the match.

Some stuff was recorded, but I'll have to track down the footage and upload.

I think we had 14 or so. Small, but we didn't really go hard at promoting the umk in this one since we were right in between War Zone and Winter Brawl on the calendar.

We did get a couple new faces though, which was cool, and both guys were pretty solid players.

Final standings came out (going from memory, will go over the bracket later.)

1. LaoShu
2. Derrick Legend
3. Chris Ghaleon
4. Tim Static

Other notables.

VDO (The Godfather of Marvel low tier, he used a low tier team and got third in that too, losing to Justin Wong), who only plays UMK3 a few times a year when we have tourneys in the Midwest. He played Shang Tsung the entire tourney and got put out by Tim Static near the end of loser's bracket.

Quentin (Arkayne). I had to beg him to join the tourney and finally did at the last minute. He used classic Sub all tourney and ended up knocking out a couple of people (including me). Really needs to start playing more because he's not bad at all.

Agreed. VDO is the man. Love that guy. he is a god in Marvel. He had by far the match of the entire in tourney in that Marvel tourney. still want to see it.

The match before i played VDO in losers, i found his asleep on a couch, i dont remember exactly who he played but he almost lost (Quentin?). He was off his game, clearly. He is a very solid UMk3 player. Nothing over the top, but he rocks the low tier Shang too. Anywho, i then put him out of UMK3 then he is called for Marvel and goes their and brings the house down. Ill post that video when its uploaded.

14 players is not bad, remember ECT2, which kickstarted interest in UMK3, had 14 players last year. Glad to hear VDO was there. At NECX when I found him to play his UMK3 match, he sleeping in a chair while MvC2 was going on.
