Mortal Kombat (2011) Matchup Chart

I'm curious how is Smoke even with Baraka? He completely shut him down just by zoning, the only things he has are Spark, Blade Charge and his X-ray. Smoke has good advantages against much of the cast.
And what, exactly, is Smoke zoning with?
I'm actually inclined to think that Baraka's Blade Rush gives him an edge OVER Smoke if we're talking in terms on specials only. Not to say that Smoke isn't a perfectly capable character. He is very solid, but if you want to see a Smoke character fall apart, just go online and when someone picks Smoke, block high. Nothing else. Just block high.
I understand that this doesn't work at the highest level of play, but it does point out one of his major weaknesses: A lack of solid lows.
As Konqrr is saying, you can't just take specials into consideration. Baraka has many other things going for him in the match-up. For one, Smoke's shake will get almost no utility this match. 'Raka isn't going to be throwing too many Blade Sparks, amirite? The aforementioned Bade Rush is very good against Smoke and can be done in reaction to Smoke Bombs. A well-timed Chop Chop punishes tele for decent damage since it can be followed up with Blade Rush.
Also, a good Smoke relies HEAVILY on reads and a good Baraka is extremely difficult to read as he can pretty much cancel into a special off of any normal (Including a D+4). I'm inclined to say this one is in Baraka's favor when considering everything; but not enough to make it a 6-4.

EDIT:

Sheeva Numbers:
v Scorpion: 4-6 His teleport keeps her from safely following up Jump Stomp with her BnB like she can against other members of the cast. His mix-up options also make it harder for her to block and punish like she can against other members of the cast. This is not as hard as the Mileena match-up, but it's an uphill battle.

v Sektor: 3-7 Up-Missile makes Jump Stomp a non-option in this match-up. His flamethrower negates the reach she can get from using her 3, 3 combo starter. And all of his attacks are faster (We don't have Sektor frame data yet, so I can't say how much faster, but he always seems to beat her out up close). He can also pretty much lock her down on the other side of the screen with Missile. *Obv she can dash block in, but he can also step back and keep doing it). It's not impossible if she does get in, though. Obviously, she hits hard up close, but getting there is about as hard with Sektor as it is with Shang Tsung.

v Sonya: 3-7. Sonya's frickin fast and Air Drop shenanigans into the reset are brutal. The only thing that makes it not so bad is that Sonya lacks a low combo starter. But she can always Military Stance, F+1 to hit low. Now, Sheeva has to respect that as well as an overhead from Military Stance, Throw. This works against everyone, obviously, but Sheeva feels the repercussions of it harder as she's so much slower than the rest of the cast, she can;t really stop Sonya from keeping pressure up even after one of the Military Stance mix-ups like many others can. Sonya's D+4 also trumps Sheeva's D+3, which she can spam against many characters to get them to crouch for a Low Grab. I'd say this match is just as hard as the Mileena one.

Right now, REO (Who provides numbers for everything because he plays too many damn characters LOL). Also, I'd be interested in Altaire's numbers, since I know his CSZ is solid.

Not sure if this has been discussed but...

SUB-ZERO

why is the Ermac matchup a 4-6 (ermac's favor) and the Sindel matchup a 6-4 (sub-zero favor). I have a MUCH harder time against the female characters in general, especially Sindel, than any Ermac i've ever fought. This could be my lack of matchup experience... which of course is why i'm asking, and not telling. Any info to this? Thanks!

And not that it means much, but I do currently hold the Best Sheeva title of the GameFAQs message board.
I have also played several times with DevilDigimon during his late night streams on UStream; and I'm fairly certain he would vouch for the quality of my Sheeva. ^_^

Sub vs Ermac is bad, because Sub can't end a blockstring with clone, or else he gets blasted by push on reaction. Push in general makes it hell to try and get clones on screen if you're in range of it.

I'll tell you straight up that I have zero Baraka offline experience. So anything following that preceding sentence you'll need to take with a huge grain(oxymoron?) of salt. I agree with Konqrr, I never contradicted that a good Baraka with always try to be in range of his Blade Charge, which looking at it, is a pretty good range. But Smoke, I believe, is a good character for keep away(I could've sworn zoning and keep away were synonymous). I'll tell you everything about Baraka that kills Smoke. Like you stated, a good Baraka will counter Smoke's teleport punch on anticipation even moreso, his spacing whiffed teleport punch. So there's goes one of his meter builders, and also like you said about a good Baraka not using much spark, so he can't build meter with Shake (although I really don't do that). His last few things? Smoke bomb, whiffed air throws, invisibilities, and his Akuma Teleports. Smoke having to be careful can't do any of these at random since the ever present threat of Blade Charge is around, so he needs to keep away with his Smoke bomb. No Baraka is just gonna sit around with you building meter, so you go to Akuma teleports, and end up putting yourself into a corner if you're not careful. Whiffed air throws are barely an option with Blade charge so is invisibility. So Smoke bombs and Akuma teles it is. My idea of zoning is with the chip from his :en Smoke bomb, not really gonna help if you're being punished and you're trying to be steady with your meter for breaker, if and when the good Baraka gets in. The only other option is Zonedown (lol), assuming Baraka's normals are average speed, really, Smoke is only really gonna be using his 2, 1 and b+2, 3 set ups when he gets in there as well as some low pokes for measly damage to try and get the Baraka annoyed, and even then the random trades are gonna be an issue. Blade Charge becomes a problems again since it is still pretty fast and unless you're a great blocker, you're gonna be eating those on your offensive.

I could say more, but I posted this to tell you, i'm aware of the drawbacks and counters that Smoke has as a character. The whole point is that, i'm still thinking Smoke can come up with things to counter what obviously are gonna be his issues, that's what Smoke can have an advantage on, what he already knows as his exploitable weaknesses. Do I have them thought up already? Absolutely not. Is that why I come here to look up the knowledge and experience of veteran players? Heck yeah. I mull over character match ups everyday, I just don't have that much offline experience to put it to work.

Good stuff. The part about using :en Smoke Bomb for chip though... When is that really going to be a factor? Only at the end of a match. Smoke needs his meter to break combos and to get the hell away from corners using :en Smoke Teleport.

With how hard it is for Baraka to get in, how he would play it is to literally walk Smoke to the corner letting him do Smoke Teleport Away while throwing Smoke Bombs. The Baraka player would be on alert for whiffed Air Teleports to not corner himself, which Baraka can punish if he is watching for it. Once Baraka corners Smoke, he stays at around jump distance to see what the Smoke player will do.

This is why the matchup is even right now. Smoke has to run away until he has an opening and a good Baraka player isn't going to give it to him. He is going to walk Smoke to the corner and make him make the wrong move. Baraka has so many good tools for anti air and punishing Smoke's options. His problem is that he can't safely rush him down.

Can someone explain to me how mileena beats reptile 7-3?
Mileena is one of the few characters that legitimately give Reptile trouble getting in, as well as getting projectiles on the screen without getting hit, plus her footsies game is a bit better. But what's the real kicker is that she is relatively safe for doing a telekick on Reptile, since if he standblocks it, he is the only character to be jailed by the sai. He cannot counter it standing, whatsoever, so he has to resort to dinky punishes after crouchblocking. She cuts off too much of his game. :/

Ahh okay that makes sense. The Ermacs i've seen never abuse push, and once I get in, I would just pressure and bait wakeups, and then punish his EXTREMELY vulnerable wakeups... but yeah I can see how that push would give Sub a serious problem. Thanks.

As far as the Sindel matchup goes I suppose I just need to fight more of them.

MK is kinda dope
So who is doing what w/each char? Also, how is this guy determined? There are some chars that are not represented well in tournaments, such as Smoke (Aris is the only guy), so it's kind of difficult no? Here's the ones I know of:

Sektor - Unconkable aka Sektroll
Scorpion - Slips
Raiden/Cage - JOP
SZ - Tom Brady (I'll put his name first so I don't get yelled at), Denzell
Kung Lao - Anybody with a pulse (I kid, I kid. Should be Perfect Legend)
Mileena, CSZ - REO
Reptile - THTB, Chris G, Sabin
NW - Lord of the fly
Kabal - Offline Tony, Michelangelo
Smoke - Aris
Kitana - Konqrr, OSU 16 Bit
Ermac - Floe, Krayzie
Liu Kang - ATL Redd
Stryker - Vulcan Hades
Shang Tsung - Valle, Detroit Ballin

I don't know who the experts are for the following:

Baraka
Sheeva
Quan Chi
Jade
Kano
Cyrax
Sindel
Sonya
Jax
Noob

And who are the "experts" on DLC chars?

Arez | Booya | Riu48 - Rest Easy, Friends
Baraka - JoseDaCuban (I think that's his name)
Sheeva - DevilDigimon (All I know of)
Quan Chi - REO, M2Dave
Jade - Arkayne, Bone
Kano - M2Dave, JT Circus
Cyrax - Trophy Club, Noobe
Sindel - Delriach, Dancock
Sonya - Morty, Wonder Chef
Jax - CDjr, EGP Tyrant
Noob - I forget who, unfortunately. :(

As for DLCs, I know REO so far, but all the others are up in the air.

I still believe Mileena beats KL 6-4. Remember, you have to assume in tiers both chars are playing perfect. Mileena's tools are more than enough to beat KL
What tools? KL has much more options than she does and as far as I know, PL doesn't play Mileena. I still respect his opinion, but REO plays both characters well and he had it the other way around. If Carl wants to say why, then that'd be great.

She can punish his spin well, her small hitbox of D4 makes getting in pretty annoying and he has to be very careful in the match, just like she does. She zones better than he does, iAS is fantastic (low hat is also, but she'll beat it everytime). Her roll is just as good as KL's spin IMO. KL has to work hard in this match and again, always has to watch out for her own mixups. Her UF4 mixed in w/B3, roll is just awesome

He can also punish her well... Spin beats d4, no need for KL to get in by jumping. KL's roll > air sai and dive kick > ground sai. Spins beats all mixups and crossup attempts. She can't punish low hat unless he throws it after knockdown and you get lucky with invincibility frames. If she beats Kung Lao, then she beats everybody.

For sure she does not beat Raiden, teleport is too fast. And a good KL will RARELY throw out a spin just to guess a psychic D4

Again, this is all my opinion, I just don't see Mileena having many true bad matchups, it's just that she's hard to use at high level
