Bad zoning? Have you been using lightning?
Lighting is too unsafe and too slow. It does 3% of damage. You lose on all projectile trades. Even when lighting hits full screen away, you get mediocre damage.

Lighting can stuff projectiles, is spammable, and can use Water orb to bring opponent to you in order to do combos. Its anything, BUT slow and unsafe. If you think its unsafe medium range and longer, your doing it wrong.

Lightning isn't a typical projectile. Use it in the same way Sub-Zero and Cyrax use their iceball and net.

Lightning's only advantage is that Nightwolf and Kenshi can't reflect it and Smoke can't parry it. The lightning does 3% of damage, it's slow and unsafe, and it doesn't even track as well as Nightwolf's does. It's hardly a zoning tool.

Sub Zero and Cyrax get more damage after iceball and net, respectively. They even get damage on trades. Cyrax gets triple the damage Rain does. These aren't fair comparisons.

My new tier list is the following.

Upper Top Tier: Kung Lao
Top Tier: Cyrax, Kabal, Raiden, Reptile (in no particular order)

I am not sure how many bad match ups Raiden has. I had originally put Reptile above Raiden because I think that Reptile beats him 6:4. Reptile's elbow dash blows through each hit of b+3,1,2 and the last hit of 3,3,4. You cannot exclude any hit to bait the elbow dash because each is punishable by the elbow dash anyway. Also, if Raiden cancels into teleport after any hit, the elbow dash turns into standing 2 which Raiden must block. The only way Raiden can punish the elbow dash is by canceling into d,f+2 which is horribly punishable on block or by doing X-Ray which is a waste of meter. Raiden has to stick to f+2,4 which builds less meter than his other strings do. Of course, because Kano's up ball has been toned down, the elbow dash is by far the best teleport punisher now. Raiden's block traps do not work on Reptile either. Overall, Raiden's strings are not very good and Reptile exposes them more so than any other character.

Furthermore, I am not yet sold on Raiden going even with Kung Lao and Johnny Cage until I see these match ups being played by high level players. Perhaps we may see Perfect Legend (Kung Lao) vs. JOP (Raiden) later on.
Are you referring to punishing blocked Elbow Dash with 1, 2 ~ Shocker or 1, 2, 1 ~ Shocker? Both of those are hit confirmable, which makes them sort of safe, i.e. if you see they are not connecting you can stop the string.

Many people who use Rain alot would like to respectfully disagree. Refer to my last post.

Wait what?! Lightning is terribly unsafe. Ive been punished by it ONLINE at medium range by characters like raiden and reptile. If you whiff, your also dead. Lightning is useless besides within combos.

How the hell does Lightning wiff? If hes jumping in on you then you should read that and use his anti air special. Its not terribly unsafe when they block. It IS safe on block. Trust me, I've tried it. They only time they get me is if I do it again, and start avoiding it rather than being a sitting duck, like a smart player would do. If anything you did the move again, they then proceeded to do Superman/ Dash. I never said it was 100% safe, because fast moves like that will catch you.

i have to dissagree with both sides about rain

Rain is not a very strong zonner and lightning like dave said is not a good tool for zoning the only tool he has to keep people out is bf1(or 2) but that only works at mid range rain is not a zonner but he does have very good tools to fight zonners

dave i have to dissagree when you said rain does not have a very good rushdown his mixup game is great and very safe 43 rain is in the air when he is doing it and d3 will not touch him as well as other move like reptile dash. he has the best armor moves in the game and his teleport recovers really fast like raiden does making rain a character hard to zone.

Frost Warrior
I'll hold my discussion about lightning for now, but his water squirt being his only way to keep people out? Really? He has a anti-air move for crying out loud! I use it all the time someone tries to jump in.

Riu, I never said that Rain's rushdown wasn't good. 4,3 is solid. As are super kick cancels. His combo damage is above average. In fact, it's great if you can pull off the I$AAC uppercut combo and enhanced super kick cancels. I still think he needs more. His throw should be untechable like Noob's.

His teleport is nowhere near as good as Raiden's, though. Rain's teleport has more start up and recovery frames. Rain also recovers in the air as soon as he teleports. You can launch him.

@ Subby, lightning is never safe up close. You don't need Reptile's elbow dash to punish it. Only the enhanced lightning is 100% safe on block.

I never said up close....and he doesn't need more. His offensive/mix-up game is great.

My (theory-fighting) thoughts on Scorpion:

Alright, there are two things that Scorpion cannot deal with easily, and those are air-ok movement options and long-range air-ok projectiles. Let's say each one puts the matchup +1 in the opponent's favor.

v. Scorpion - 5:5 (mirror)
v. Sub-Zero - 5:5
v. Reptile - 5:5
v. Ermac - 4:6
v. Noob Saibot - 5:5
v. Smoke - 4:6
v. Mileena - 3:7
v. Kitana - 3:7
v. Jade - 5:5
v. Sektor - 4:6
v. Cyrax - 5:5
v. Cyber Sub-Zero - 5:5
v. Sindel - 4:6
v. Sonya - 5:5
v. Jax - 5:5
v. Johnny Cage - 5:5
v. Stryker - 5:5
v. Liu Kang - 4:6 (Bicycle Kick doesn't count)
v. Kung Lao - 5:5
v. Kano - 5:5
v. Nightwolf - 5:5
v. Kabal - 4:6
v. Baraka - 5:5
v. Shang Tsung - 5:5
v. Quan Chi - 5:5
v. Raiden - 4:6
v. Sheeva - 5:5

Fortunately, if the opponent can only zone or pressure, Scorpion has a variety of moves to keep them wherever he wants to. I'll mark this as a +1 in Scorpion's favor.

v. Scorpion - 5:5 (mirror)
v. Sub-Zero - 5:5
v. Reptile - 5:5
v. Ermac - 5:5
v. Noob Saibot - 6:4
v. Smoke - 5:5
v. Mileena - 3:7
v. Kitana - 3:7
v. Jade - 5:5
v. Sektor - 5:5
v. Cyrax - 5:5
v. Cyber Sub-Zero - 5:5
v. Sindel - 4:6
v. Sonya - 6:4
v. Jax - 6:4
v. Johnny Cage - 6:4
v. Stryker - 6:4
v. Liu Kang - 4:6
v. Kung Lao - 5:5
v. Kano - 5:5
v. Nightwolf - 6:4
v. Kabal - 4:6
v. Baraka - 6:4
v. Shang Tsung - 6:4
v. Quan Chi - 5:5
v. Raiden - 4:6 (although he cannot zone well, his teleport nullifies the need to)
v. Sheeva - 6:4

Does the second list seem about right to y'all?

yes your right unlike raiden you can hit him out of his teleport on start up but he can also teleport in mid air for a counter and both recover about the same time making it as useful as raiden's teleport from mid to full screem and for people who like to just wait for you to teleport to punish. . .you can trick them with eh teleport

however i do agree raiden teleport is better at close range but from mid to full screem rain's teleport is just as good or better

I use Rain. It's unsafe as hell, and has bad tracking. Against good players, it's not nearly that good. It's really combo filler and occasionally to stuff a predicted projectile. You can't really use it to zone.

His offense isn't bad...and for the most part it's just there to build meter for EX roundhouse. He's an okay character, but he has problems.

Rain's lighting is not a good "projectile," if you want to call it that. Like THTB said, it has shitty tracking and is poor on trades. He relies more on rushdown tactics with his strings, armor moves, and SRHK mixups. He punishes very nicely too.

I'd say Kenshi is S-tier or very near to it. He does have the tools to stop a rushdown character, it's just the crossups that stuff him. He's like Ermac in the sense that his only answer to a crossup is his uppercut, except Ermac's uppercut has a great hitbox and you can combo off it for 47%, so long as you catch them at the peak of their jump. Kenshi's uppercut is absolute ass, so there's not a damn thing he can do about getting crossed up. He DOES have good pressure strings, a good low starter (along with a very safe overhead to mix it in with), and a decent 50/50, for what little it's worth. He's a lot like Shang in the sense that he needs to play footsies to keep people out, but unlike Shang, he has a much easier time stuffing them once they actually get in.

The hilarious part is that he's one of those characters where I'm like "He does so much damage without ever using a bar of meter, but it's like...he needs it. XD"

Not true at all. Half of what makes Raiden's teleport is how hard it is to predict in some cases. It's difficult to stop on reaction due to how quick it is, so you really need to be watching for it. Even from a safe distance, Rain completely telegraphs his, which makes it a lot easier to stop.

About Rain, I'd say he's solid A tier, but nowhere near S. He can be pushed pretty far if you know what you're doing, but it takes a lot of work. His standout qualities are his good pressure strings, his resets and the fact that it's all but impossible to get him with a crossup. Throw in the fact that he has armor on just about every EX, and Rain definitely has some good tools at his disposal. He's very inflexible, though. He feels about as rigid as Shang Tsung does, just for the exact opposite reasons. Shang needs to keep people out because if they get in, you're left with "oh shit, he knocked me down, what the fuck am I supposed to do now". Rain needs to keep people within humping distance at all times, and try to avoid knocking THEM down.

I personally think Rain's greatest asset is that he can all but eliminate wakeup game in some cases. If you finish combos with the bubble, you sacrifice a lot of damage, but you leave your opponent in a stand with an assload of advantage. If you catch a jump-in with the squirt gun, you still leave your opponent in a stand, albeit with less advantage and too much distance to go for a reset. Still, there are situations where this is your best way out of trouble, and it still denies your opponent a wakeup. His 2 4 is okay for pressure without granting a knockdown either, though I haven't tested this enough to know how useful it is. Something to consider, I guess.

MK is kinda dope
I really hope one day the MK community drops the whole "S tier" garbage, cause NOBODY in this game is S tier. There are some top tiers, mid tiers and a couple of low tiers

I don't even use it anymore. Letters for tiers are meaningless when you have Vanilla Sagat pulling in an S-tier ranking...and he wasn't even close to the shit people have dealt with in the past.

My lists usually just do Top, Mid and Bottom, and any tiers in between that if necessary (Like Upper and Lower tier for characters just outside of mid tier but not top or bottom).
