Cyrax: Where Does He Stand?

Lt. Boxy Angelman

I WILL EAT THIS GAME
This isn't a matchup or a tier-based thread, just a nagging curiosity.

What is the general consensus on the once-reviled, but now seemingly-average yellow nightmare?

He's still my #1. In heart and skill.
Still the main that made me a better player when, on a day early in MK9's life, devoid of hope, I cycled the cast endlessly in the hopes of finding ANYONE who could take me to the next level, a little voice in the back of my head said "Pick Cyrax," and the world of Box changed.

But the game of today is much different than the game we were playing on that day.
And now my poor robot faces challenges almost beyond the scope of his yellow capabilities.
But I refuse to quit on him. I have my secondaries and my backup plans should the time ever come that they're needed, I've gone through my phases of Sub-hood and Quan-dom and all that happy hoppy misdirection, but there's no one in this game for me better suited than Cyrax.

So I'm curious, TYM, especially the bigger, badder bone-breakers of the scene:
What are your thoughts on today's Cyrax?

Very solid character. Great pressure, and keeps you on your toes throughout the whole match.

I hate him. (well he's resets)

I used to hate the resets/used to leave them out of my array, but in this day and age...well...all bets are off.

As Hitoshura always says, he's an all-or-nothing character, at least when it comes to his harder matches/the more screwed up people in this game.

seemingly average? you've gotta be kidding me..
I just call it like I see it. I don't mean average as in he isn't still a great character, but when it seems like the entirety of the "top tier" has an upper hand on him, you rarely ever see him in high level tourney matches anymore save by the hands of yourself and a few choice others, and a good deal of his payers have left the poor guy behind to go pick up someone more dangerous on paper, he doesn't quite have the aura of fear or respect about him as he once did. I hope I'm wrong. I want to see a Cyrax resurgence amidst all these blind swords, crispy pinchpricks, knees, onion rings, ketchup bottles and F4 resets. He became my favorite/main main partly because he was my favorite to watch. I was so happy when W1nter Warz and his keyboard brought him out for On The Edge 2.
IMO, the scene needs more Cyrax. He's the robot everyone loves to hate.

Even without the resets taken into consideration, he still has an obscene margin of error and a great mixup in the command grab "loop."

The conventional build of Cyrax everybody learned has become obsolete, but you still have people like Mustard and Noobe being successful with the character because they aren't playing the same Cyrax everybody has learned to fight.

Cyrax is a ridiculously good character. The problem is, nobody uses his entire arsenal of tools, his bomb traps, pressure and command grab combined with his nets are such ridiculously good tools. The net and a dream Cyrax? Overrated. 100% overrated; he is not a gimmick. He's a SOLID character but you have to utilize his pressure as well which is nothing to scoff at.

When Mustard comes to EVO, you'll all see. Mustard is the only Cyrax player I can think of that gets it.

Agreed. I <3 the Mustard man. SvB 2011 FTW.

I try to be unorthadox. A significant enough amount of people have told me I have a really unique approach.
Fishing is asking for death as anyone worth their salt will know how to traverse the mine field and counter-zone, so I don't shoot for the giant combos so much as I just try and get my opponent out of their comfort zone and into my grasp. If I happen to get some good damage out of it, so be it, but I'm more concerned with getting under their skin and baiting out a mistake. His pressure is only a problem for you if you're fighting someone who knows how to unravel, but if you mix it up enough, there are definitely ways to catch them off guard and bombs away. 2/21/D3/D4/11/Throw/CG, it goes on and on.
That crazy coot J360 puts down probably the best Cy pressure I've ever seen with my own face, so I try to take his powers and find a way to funnel them into my own. The problem, IMO, is that seeing as this game's #1 key component as of now is footsies and up-close back and forth, there are a scary amount of characters who outclass him in that department, on top of having ways around him from a distance, ala Kabal, Smoke, Lao, Jax...he can certainly hold his own without dying a horrible death, but he has a tough time nonetheless.

Go to hell.
Top 10, in the 7-9 region.

Jesus resets, safe vortex, good pressure, very good at capitalizing off of mistakes, very good at causing them. Good footsies as well.

Pretty much this. I think the reason people don't use him as much is because there are a decent amount of counter picks for him due to the fact that everyone and their dog knows now that he's easier to zone out with the right character (not saying he's dead in the water if you're trying to zone him by any means, but it's difficult for him to deal with). I don't think he's top 5 anymore, but I wouldn't put him any lower than top-tier.

He still has his command-grab mix-ups and amazing mind games. It's just people have evolved past the first era Cyrax. We just gotta pave the way for new one :)

Revenant Jade
A Cyrax player that fishes combos by spamming Bombs and Green Nets full screen is lame.

However, a rushdown Cyrax approaching you with D1, D3, Air Grab, Ragdoll, Buzz Saw and his standing 1 is "F'ing" scary.. seriously once he touches with 11, 33, Green Net/meter draining Ex Green Net or throws in Command Grab, jip, Command Grab B2 over and over it's terrifying.

Cyrax is solid Top 10, he has too many tools that pose a threat which opens up opportunities for his high damage resets.

It's not an attempt to downplay, more my concern over the higher-tier characters that seem to excel far more often than he does. I know he's a great character, just not the best when compared to the rest.
Oh no, I know you don't, but a lot of Cyrax players act like he's a big yellow garbage truck lol
