Quan Chi's Almost "Vortex"

Quan Cheese!!!
In case you didn't know a "vortex" is when a character can keep looping something until the opponent guesses right or breaks. The only character with one in mk9 is scorpion, because he can end a kombo with a grounded teleport. This grants him a safe jump which gives him a free mixup of f4 spear or b2. Both moves link back into the mixup. Quan Chi almost has one. Quan Chi can end all kombos with 11 sky drop. This grants free pressure. With this free pressure you can go for a stand breaker of b3 1+2 which is a kombo starter, which links back into trance then 11 skydrop. If you guess wrong and they block the back3 1+2 low then high you are still at neutral frames and at a good position. Quan Chi's overhead is u3 trance. You cannot hit confirm u3 into trance so if blocked you are getting full kombo punished. If your opponent tries to jump out of b3 1+2 or u3 trance which is very possible they will escape, but if you do a 112 instead they will not be able to jump out. This is easily hit confirmable into trance on hit. Now the reason that Quan Chi does not actually have a vortex is that u3 is 27 frames. U3 is semi-easibly fuzzable on reacion. Therefore your opponent can always block low and then switch to blocking high when they see an u3. If you have meter that you want to spend on the rune trap you can spend your meter and then do the mixup. I do not take credit at all for figuring this out as I'm sure that it has been known since day 1. Although low level quan chi's I hope will find this helpful. High level quan chi's I'm sure that this didn't help you at all and that you are going to leave a hate comment. So go ahead and leave the hate comment now.

J/k, yeah this tactic is good for opponents that block low all day, nice way to mix it up and play mindgames. But I think it's better to use 212 than 112 because you can still hit confirm into trance if the opponent trys to jump out. And if they don't you can always go for runetrap.

It's known, but yeah man, u3~trance is pretty gimmicky. I'll throw one out here and there but I do not rely on it at all lol. It's really only useful against the people who aren't familiar with Quan and don't know how to fuzzy guard him and constantly just block low.

Sometimes you do get lucky with the u3~trance though. So hey, you gotta use it here and there. I think most people presume that you're going to use it once desperate though. I personally prefer B1/throw/B1 or 11/throw/2 though on block. They're neutral and grant juggles or a throw.

I never use U3, its waaaaay too slow. 27 frames? thats ridiculous. If they decreased the amount of frames it took to get the move out, yeah he'd have vortex.

The simplest description I've heard of a vortex is just this: 'a setup that leads to the same setup'

well you would only 112 if you're out of bar and you can still runetrap from 112

Woops the most important reason is that a grounded 112 links into trance and a grounded 212 does not. Not even a grounded 21. A grounded 2 does but it is far from being worth it, because the high risk and ability to just do 112.

Does getting yourself killed count?

Also Quan's EN Skull puts them into a really long stagger so you get a free jump in punch.

Do you guys remember when Sky Drop had a much longer stagger?
No, U3 is used in a really weird set up that I'll have a video for soon. And yeah, the skull gives a free jump, but they won't get out of 212 after a skydrop anyway so might as well save that meter for the rune.

Well it's good to know for when your opponent is like "I bet you can't beat me without the rune trap!"

That's actually why I ever picked up quan lol!

Is it something like 21u3 knockdown into a trap
Everyone needs to stop guessing because you won't guess it. And no.

It's not a big game changer. Don't get too hype about it. It's just a very interesting offensive approach using some glitchy visual exploits in the game. It's bad ass, but it'll be up to the individual players as to how much potential they see in using it.
