MK9 PS Vita "How's online?" thread

Matix218

Get over here!
I played 1 match last night before I went to bed and it did have some lag, specifically once I started a juggle (with smoke) but it honestly was probably my connection because my stupid brother was streaming a video while I was playing.

PS3 in general is notorious for having more problematic netplay than anything else. It's not just MK with this problem. SFIV and HDR are terrible on PS3 as well.
Honestly, I haven't heard anything that negative in regards to SF4, 3S, MVC3, SCV, Skull Girls or anything else on PS3. I mean, like I said I've got a 27mbs connection, MK9 is the only game I've played on PS3 that really plays like shit online. It's just aggravating, I'm not about to buy a 360 specifically for online, nor am I going to buy a vita for online alone; I frankly cannot afford it.

That baby on Jax was un called for!

Most of my connections have been fine. It feels good to anti air consistently with jax Standing 1, and connect f413 with d1 in the corner.

BTW how do you turn of your mic?
I think the mic is own automatically..at least for me. I was playing against Carefoot last night and I couldnt hear anything from his end.

If you have a good internet connection, all of those Capcom games play just fine. SF4, SFxT, MVC3. Skull Girls plays beautifully for me when GGPO is set correctly.

MK9 is the only game that generally plays like garbage for me on PSN, which seems to point squarely at the netcode. That said, I HAVE had plenty of good connections as well with certain people.

For those who have played on PSN and XBL, is the XBL MK9 experience truly that much better? I'd hate to have to rebuy the game again on a different system just for the online...

Pig Of The Hut is truly the only person I feel is really qualified to answer that. He's rarely on his PSN account though; so I would assume that yes, 360's MK has a better netcode.

Maybe he'll pop in and throw down an answer.

I've played Skull Girls with a friend in California and the connection has been excellent. I couldn't even feel any lag with GGPO set properly.

I've played 4-person SFxT with a friend in California, another in New York, a third in Florida, and I'm in Philadelphia. There were only a few times where I felt lag kick in. Those aside, the connection was fine.

These things make me think its much, much more the netcode than PSN. Of course, I have a great, wired internet connection. Half of it could simply be playing people with crappy internet connections, or some kid in his college frathouse, using the wireless that 10 other guys are sharing at the same time, etc.

That was my initial assumption as well. The South American players on PSN are horrendous. But I don't think there's any direct correlation between "I'm a cheap bastard who has a 1.5mbps DSL plan" and owning a PS3. None the less, it's bad to the point that I'm extremely rusty and haven't really touched the game in a month as of last night when I got to play some casuals offline.

I'll tell you what, I'll friend you on PSN. We're not even that far from each other - Asheville to Philly - so we should hopefully get a good connection, right? It'd be a nice test.

Sounds good, we'll try some AAs and anti-crossups lol

more mbps doesn't mean you automatically will be lag free. It helps to have a higher download speed sure, but other factors are involved. You might be having Nat Type 2 connection on your ps3 which is a firewall causing longer ping which will result in more "lag". You should try custom settings on your ps3 to ensure there is no firewall and you can have the best possible connection. Upload speed is also just as important as download especially if you are host. I have a fiber optic connection, 36D 6 up with 8ms ping on my ps3. When I play other people with fiber it's probably the best way to play online. I've played Sabin and Check and was hardly ever able to feel lag at all. Maybe 2 frames at most but AA's anti cross ups and all the tricky stuff was possible. I play primarily offline so I really know that the connection was strong.

Not everything is simply just netcode either. gah all I hear from people is netcode this, netcode that, netcode netcode netcode. I feel like people disregard the fact that it takes so much work to even play games online in the first place. Does anyone ever stop and think how you can play with people around the world any time you want? You know how freaking amazing that is alone? Yea, so it's more difficult to be a high level tourney player playing online. SO what, if you aren't having fun with the game don't play it. That option is also available. Sorry for the rant guys. I'm in pain from a gum infection and have just been stressed out haha

Regarding the Nat 2, I do in fact have that though I'm not sure how to get that down to a Nat 1 with a router? I'll figure it out, requires going into the router settings I'm sure!

Hahahahahaha good rant. The big problem (and reason it feels easy to point at the netcode) is that NONE of the other games I play on PSN have the lag that MK9 does. Bad online turns off good players who would otherwise play the game; they'll just quit MK and play something else. Plus it sucks that my favorite fighter plays notably worse in general in comparison to other titles.

Sadly, though I get the gist of what you're saying and agree to a point, it doesn't work in the real world. Lots of other games have amazing netplay. I don't care what it takes to make that happen. It's not my problem. I am a consumer, I pay my money, and have certain expectations. It sucks that the answer seems to be "if you want great netplay, go play Skullgirls or something."

It's just like my (or anyones) job. I'm hired to deliver results based on certain expectations. If a database goes down and I can't fix it and company doesn't know where millions of dollars of sales went, my boss doesn't wanna hear "do you have any idea how hard it is to repair leaf-node damage? you should be thankful that we even HAVE databases!" hahahahaha. They'll just fire me and get someone else who CAN do the job.

Please note that I'm not at all digging on you Medina hahahaha, I think you're frigging godlike. Just commenting on why I think good online is such a necessity in todays gaming world!

Fighting games in general are hard to get right because the littlest of lag (3 frames or more) causes lash out. What other games have better response time than that aren't fighters? Please don't say fps because that is far from true. You probably can't tell in those games because just a couple of frames there don't have as much of an impact as a couple of frames for fighting games.

Absolutely. Lag is always going to be there, and it affects fighters the harshest of any genre. It's all a matter of doing your best to hide it. So far, I'd say SFxT (a game I don't even like) and particularly SkullGirls, which uses adjustable GGPO, have done it the best.

GGPO really does seem like the way to go for 2D fighting games.

GGPO is awesome, I agree most other 2d fighter companies should pick it up. Like I said though too, it is possible to play on a real good connection on PSN. U just need the right settings and playing the right person

I think somehow we're agreeing with other and saying the same thing in different ways over and over hahahaha.

After messing with it more, putting the vita in dmz did nothing, but forwarding the psn ports individually did wonders, this game plays smoother online than it ever did on Xbox for sure, seriously. I never played on ps3. I'm impressed.

I know what you mean. Im so used to playing on PS3 that this game feels like everyone is in TURBO mode. Seriously the game is so smooth and actually responsive (when you have a good connection that is). Since I have never played this game offline, im inclined to say that the vita experience is close to it lol.

But when the connection is bad, my goodness it is horrible lol
