First Time Going To a Tournament

Espio

Kokomo
Okay, so I will be going to my first offline tournament, Season's Beatings in Ohio in a couple weeks, already got pre-registered, got a pad, just waiting on my converter:). What can I expect? Any advice on things to do or not do? How do you guys deal with tournament nerves (I get slightly nervous during online tournaments lol)?

Any and all advice or help is appreciated:D.

You can expect to have fun. There's a hella good fried chicken place right nearby too. I don't say that lightly because I love fried chicken. My only advice is to find everyone you know and everyone you might know and even those you don't know and play lots of casuals. You'll be amazed at how much you level up especially on those hard matchups. I personally have a couple of drinks to shake the nerves but so far, that hasn't been helping me win so maybe someone else can provide help on the jitters. :)

Expect to have a blast and meet great people!!! Just play your game and don't worry about who your playing in tourny, just think about the match up. The nerves will probably be there, but just embrace it and have a blast man :) theres nothing like it and you'll be hooked after, cause it's like crack.

Blasting music in your ears helps calm the nerves but playing the casuals is the key. Don't worry about how far you place. Worry about the casuals and getting used the monitors. The people are tournaments are generally nice or open to talk to you so don't be afraid of talking to anyone.

Being nervous is fine. If you make mistakes or completely fuck up, do not blame yourself, the game, montiors or your opponent. Look back at what you did wrong and improve. You will not get anywhere getting frustrated at the game or anything. I'm not saying not show any emotion. Show if you make a bad read or you mess up that you actually care. It could be laughing, sighing, saying anything really. Don't hold anything back but do it in a respectable manner. After a match win or lose, see if the opponent will help you out and give you advice or explain what you did wrong. I'm sure you will run into someone that wont want to say anything eventually. Accept it and move on. They are probably too frustrated with themselves so let them be.

Also cut the honor code bullshit. Don't take that the wrong way, I don't even know if you follow one. Do what you can to win. If someone gives your shit for it, they are the ones in the wrong. You need to accept all the bullshit in this game if you want to level up far. The problem with me was when I noticed my offline guys or a tournament getting frustrated or mad, I limited myself without even knowing. I've been slowly getting rid of that in the back of my head. This is coming from an online cod player (look up my xbl gt on cod elite, I was actually pretty good). I didn't care about anyone online because it was just me and my set up in the room. Glad I dropped the game for mk9 after I picked it up.

Do not be afraid to use any new tech, even if you aren't completely comfortable with it. Casuals or tournament play, you need to do everything you can. If you don't agree with me on that, see what happens. Most of the time the average player will switch to a different character or play safe with simple shit. Push your limits; you'll be surprised with your results. That being said, don't give up if you keep losing. I wouldn't be where I am with kabal if I didn't do so. I played a lot of games with Tom Brady's sub and kung lao with my kabal. He exposed a lot of the things I was doing wrong and I kept trying to fix it. He even made me notice the smaller things I have been messing and told me I'll get it, just keep trying. To take that in the best way possible you need to look at it like this; You aren't a bad player. Your opponent is not above you in anyway either. You simply have to fix your mistakes and level up. I can't thank tom enough for running that many games with me. I love getting blown up to see my mistakes.

I wrote more than I expected, damn adderall lol. This is how I've adapted to the scene with the short time being here. My mindset, goals and motivation are a lot different that others so I don't expect anyone to agree with me. I hope you got something out of this.

ninja edit;
Don't be afraid to go on stream lol. Its also a good tool to get used to being under pressure. I have no problem with showing my performance on Blackula's stream. Take note that it was a 3 1/2 hour trip, I was crashing from adderall and I didn't get much sleep. Not meant to be taken as an excuse, I'm just saying I should have done a lot better and my reactions were way off. Next time I'll be a bit more prepared to stay up that late.

awesome that you are going to your first tourney.

I get super super nervous to the point that my legs shake like crazy. So I started drinking and it help calm me down. The negative is you start to get too calm and I end up not caring do much.

Great replies so far, you all have been immensely helpful:D.

Cool, I love good food, do you remember the name? I'm probably going to gorge on food to calm myself lol. I'll have to bug everyone, the only thing is that I'm really, really shy around people I don't know in groups:(.

Also, lol whatever helps you relax, I'm more of a tea drinker though,so I might try that :).

Imagine your opponent's character in their underwear.

If they're playing costume 3 mileena, then I don't know
lol, this reminds me of the advice we got from our Theater director when we did the Music Man performance, priceless.

I'll be going to my first offline tournament too, next saturday, Espio. We could totally share first tourney stories! XD
Awesome man, what's it called? Also, good luck my good gent:). I'd love to share stories.

Blow them all a kiss, make them uncomfortable, show some skin, be yourself, be ROUGE <3
lmao this is brilliant. Be Free, Be Rouge. I'll go get my Pole while I'm at it:p. Also, I could have sworn that was someone's PSN.

Is it going to be hard getting used to the PS2 pad? I remember you posting about it being a bit of a problem with ex moves. I'm curious how doing ex moves will be on the pad given that the R2 button is more insulated instead of outward on the controller. Is doing the ex fan cancels harder on the PS2 pad? I only ask because I'm going to definitely need to be doing gun cancels with Stryker and they're almost identical to ex fan cancels.

Expect to have a blast and meet great people!!! Just play your game and don't worry about who your playing in tourny, just think about the match up. This makes me feel immensely better, that's my only expectation for going is to just have fun and test myself.

That's what I'm worried about, getting hooked and not wanting to go back to online lol.

If 9.95 shows up and asks you if you want to play your first match against check on stream, say no.
Good to know lol.

Drinking some alcohol seems to be a common solution, but I'm not one for drinking, I only drink wine once in a blue moon, I might try some tea. I don't know how I would be drunk, I'm silly buzzed though lol.

Also immensely helpful Lou:). I'm just going to go in with no expectations other than to learn and test myself. Flawless Victory was your first major right?

I'm definitely expecting to make a lot of nervous, dumb mistakes, nerves kill me lol. I'm good at usually faulting myself and trying to learn, though I've been guilty of it in the past though in regards to blaming my characters (not anymore though, it's up to me to show they're legit, not the other way around).

As for an honor code, I'm going to stick to Stryker or Jade throughout the entire tournament, though I expect to be counter picked and I expect to fight Kung Lao and Kenshi as well. I'm not worried about that portion and will have no ill will about, I'm hoping my experience fighting Kenshi and Kung Lao and others is enough however.

I'm actually working on some stuff with Stryker that I'll probably try in casuals, it works online, but I'd like to see if it works for pressure offline.

Your whole attititude has changed quite a bit since we first started playing, I like it and this has been a really great and helpful read:).

I'll check out the stream a bit later today (off to study for my Spanish final).

You will BOW to me!
Just be yourself, dont play alot of casuals which might reveal your strategies to your opponents and in general try to have fun. Thats the most important thing imo. If you let nerves get the better of you, its over.

I'm glad you could get something out of that. My mindset, goals, etc have changed slowly over the past few months. Recently there has been a huge change. I've been pushing the NoVA scene so hard and just now some of them are getting on the same page of me. I'm not saying they are bad, its the same page in terms of praticing. I practice everyday for the past 2months with kabal. The least amount of time I put in one day was 4hours. I have been so dedicated to adapt and do what I have to do.

For the honor code I didn't mean pick up the best character. I picked up kabal because I loved the character and played him when I was younger playing mortal kombat, sega genesis status. You need to have the desire to win and do whatever to can.

Flawless Victory was my second tournament overall. After the one in early jan when I first started, I realized what I had to do to level up. I pushed the nova scene together and offered my house on fridays. I try to have it the most comfortable I can make it. It has been going up and down but I have not given up.

I did get frustrated with myself after getting taken out. I wasn't used to the monitors and lacked match up experience. When the casual stations came back, I practiced and practiced until top 3 went on. I wanted to see top 8 but I was to focused on improving. The frustration was so bad that I thought about dropping kabal and had the impression that I suck and can't play fighting games since its so different than fps's. After about 20minutes I mentally slapped myself and said, "No fuck that, I will have another chance to prove myself. I don't care how long it takes."

But good luck. If you have the desire to win, you wont be "free." Even if you do well in casuals and the opposite at the tournament, I believe that you will do great.

Basically what you're saying is... "play to win".

Meaning, if you play cyrax... use his damage exploits, Quan Chi... abuse the rune traps, Jax... corner reset, etc etc. Don't limit yourself to not doing things b/c you think they are cheap or w/e, right?

Pretty much. I didn't want to instant air gas blast with kabal for the longest time for two reasons. I wanted to get the pressure and footsies down, and I felt like doing it made me look bad and scrubby as hell. I just now started to use everything kabal has to offer at my current level. By the end of saturday night I made my friday kabal look like shit.

You wont level up if you keep saying hitbox is cheap, using the damage exploits is scrubby, the rune trap is fucked up, jax shouldn't have the corner resets. Yes, all of that is stupid but you have to get past all of the bullshit if you want to be at your fullest potential with your character.

All I can tell you is that you'll enjoy tournaments. They are so fun regardless of whether tournament nerves kick in or not lol. If they do you'll look back and laugh at it and eventually they'll become less and less. The people you'll meet will no doubt be a blast to hang out with I'm sure.

You best show some Edenian class to those folks!

Any advice on things to do or not do? How do you guys deal with tournament nerves (I get slightly nervous during online tournaments lol)?

Any and all advice or help is appreciated:D.
Our Jade mirror matches were lovely last night. If you keep doing your spacing control and be annoying as possible for others trying to get in, that will work you many wonders. I rarely fight good Jade players ESPECIALLY ones with space control, I was irritated lol never realized how I played this character .. and she can be so annoying fighting against her. Also, if you read the 'ASUS' monitor topic, that's a huge deal so you must slow down your inputs and you MUST play casuals. Some say it feels like online lag but in reality it shows every frame so you CAN react to jumpers/cross ups and punish. Jumping in and cross ups offline will get you killed, this will be the time where Jade can successfully anti-air with standing 1 and anti-cross up with D1 which RARELY ever happens online.. only 1 Jade player I've played online ever did it and he/she was gdlk.

As for nerves just think of it has a King of the Hill room where you have real players waiting for their turn as your audience.

when i went to my first tournament i got jitters cause of the need to perform was on me I place 5th I think. All i can say is go in there and do your thing. Don't play for the crowd, the stream monsters, your opponent, JUST YOU. After a year of playing in tournaments for ssf4 and Mk all i found is all you can do is your best, and try to play like you were at home.

- If you're planning on going to tourneys regularly, then start doing some kind of sport. Working out is great for anybody, gamer or not.
- 2L of water a day. More if you excercise. (4L on creatine if you're working out. Creatine is desired for reaction times)
- Sleep all the hours you need, but have a schedule.
- Organize your life so you don't have to worry about work or study-related stuff mid-match.
- Be polite.
- If you have noise-cancelling headphones, then go for them. If you don't, use regular earbuds listening to the music you like.
- Don't overtrain before the tourney. It's better to be fresh and rested. Try to not to play the day before the tourney (or two days) as your brain gets tired too. Get there early and warm up at casuals.
- Sit still and think about your back when playing. It may end up hurting you a lot.
- If your an anxious person, don't take caffeine pills or drink energetic drinks at all. It may make you react faster, but it rises your anxiety levels, which will probably lead you to take bad decisions mid-match. Instead, drink REAL green tea (also makes you react faster) and eat lettuce for that anxiety if possible.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
- Use your glasses, duh.
- Enjoy the competition, have good manners and good sportsmanship wether you win or lose.

If you follow these, I can assure you you'll have a blast.

That an interesting point, I play a lot of characters, so I might be better off just mixing it up with my characters in casuals.

Thanks a lot:).

Keep at it with improving your scene, love to see the community grow:).

I knew you didn't mean pick the best character, I must have misunderstood that you were telling me not to be afraid to use my character's dirt, I was thinking that i shouldn't expect honor code stuff. I'll be using every tool I know of to win of course.

Also, no doubt you love Kabal, he takes a lot of work to make legit, I never got into him like that, but he's a great character.

Also, thanks I will try my best, although I said my only goal was to have fun and level up, I'd also like to show that Stryker and Jade are not trash in this game...dunno how that part's going to work out though lol.

All this positive feedback is awesome, I'm really shy in big crowds so that should be interesting lol.

I'll be trying my best to show off Jade's swag:cool:.

Those were absolutely amazing, they almost always went to the last round. Jade is aggravating to fight when she's playing conservatively, I realized I wasn't playing lame enough until later on in our set lol. Thanks for the support, it's great to hear that from a very solid player:).

I did check out the ASUS monitor thread, I checked out some the TV I play on it's an older model, might not have the lag of newer TV's, but I will keep a lot of this helpful tips in mind and I'm trying to get there an hour or two earlier to play casuals before the tourney starts, got a 3 hour drive to Ohio.

Congrats on placing so well:D. This is actually something I've never thought about, I always worry about looking dumb when other people are watching me play, that's something I need to work on, just playing for me when people are watching.

Great advice, I'll have to keep a great deal of this in mind, really well thought out list, much of this I never even thought of, especially the over training, it reminds me of overstudying for finals, I always do bad if I over study.

First off, thanks for making my tourney where you lose your tourney virginity LOL

but all the advice in the world wont do you any good until you just find what works for you, and until you get out there and experience it for yourself, you wont know. So enjoy the weekend, talk to other players and learn from it. :)

also, make sure you introduce yourself to me! :D

Most importantly... the good players will always help you level up. Don't be in awe of them... they are ... after all... just dudes.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that.
- Try going with a friend or two so you're not lonely there. Or try making friends there. I'm sure you won't have problems with people there. They usually bring your hopes up.
- Try eating at least 30 mins before your match if you're meant to play at lunch-time or something alike.
- Eat healthy. Eating healthy is underrated.
- Try to not eat alone.

That should be it. Gl and hf.

Get on that hook
All this "first tourney" stuff makes me want to go to Toryuken.School schedule-wise it's good. All I need is confirmation from my parents and it's a go.

And hopefully I'll be finally able to go to my offline scene next week.Fingers crossed.

I went to my first tourney (a local) today. It was soooooo much fun dude. Getting to know the people was awesome. I could actually anti-air! I got straight up bodied (hitbox was broken, still no excuse). Regardless of placing, you'll love it. Have fun man!
