Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition announced! End of the games cycle?

The Definitive Edition has been announced with everything already released + the new movie skins. This is a major signal that the cycle of the game is nearing it's end if hasn't reached it already. The only saving grace is Ed saying more on an X post and the "AND MORE" below. I don't think now was the time to be vague as this tells everyone the game is done and in it's definitive state. Did not expect that today! Price tag is $59.99

Not to be that guy and seemingly come off like I'd defending WB and potentially predatory marketing practices but... support =/=content. Releasing a definitive edition doesn't mean they won't continue to support the game, it only implies that the cycle of content behind a pay wall is over. They can still drop QoL patches and the like. I'm pretty sure MKX's final balance patch came after MKXLs release.

So you're saying there's still a chance they release Sonya for free, right

We already know they'll do one more patch. But it usually is just one more patch.

That's true, and the same goes for MK11. MKX got more patches after KP2, and MK11 got several skins to buy even after Ultimate came out on top of patches.

It isnt yet, though. Mk11 was supported longer
Yes it is. MK11 got DLC support from April 2019 to December 2020, that's 1 year and 8 months. MK1 got DLC support until now and according to the files, it is gonna get more skins to unlock or buy at the beginning of every season until season 8 in it's 2nd rotation. That is 2 years and a half.

I hope "and more" is the announcement that they're getting rid of Cianciolo
Goes to show that you don't understand anything about story writing.

“We’re supporting our games for years to come”
Well Gun Media, who's behind the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game pretty much said something similar awhile back and......surprise surprise!
End of content! Right along with Evil Dead and Multiversus.

Birds of a feather. New year. New game. Same old bullshit.

Tbh im contempt with how the game turned out. Wouldve liked another story and some chars, but its fine. Definitely not the last patch imo. But if it is, im only mad because havik, cyrax and baraka stay the way they are.

Not the best launch, but the end result of MK1 is the second-best game we’ve had in the modern MK era.

Heavily neutral-focused, with a lot of room in the meta for dirt and creativity, a great roster, probably the most balanced MK game, and some of the best character designs we’ve had since MK9.
No denying they made things so much better at the end, but overall it's very disappointing.... For it to be said that WB was FORCED to pull the plug only 1 year into the games life of an MK game feels unbelievable, even though we got 8 months of content in year 2, this game had funding pulled in year 1. They didnt just start working on the Definitive Edition yesterday, they knew this after the KR launch when it was reported funding was pulled doe to very poor sales of the expansion.

I just dont see how this can ever be seen as the 2nd best MK game when after 1 year they made an expansion that simply put, people just didnt want to buy. NRS had way to many mistakes to overcome and MK1 paid for it. Sales wise they wont even touch MKX's sales.. regression of 10 years. The truth is.. I'm not sure that any MK game in the NRS era was actually a good fighting game.

Also, for anyone making this out to be a situation where NRS is being held down by the thumb of WB, DONT!! This happened because NRS made an expansion that just did not sell well at all, PERIOD! This is very unfortunate, but do not forget that its NRS that made the product that didnt sell well after WB dumped millions into the expansion. This was a business decision made off of numbers, poor ones.

mk1 is the longest supported game in NRS history... .
Alot of people like talking about these rather silly semantics. But the reality is that they abandond their seconde game in a row, after promising years upon years of support.

This one got dropped even sooner then mk11 and again people can cling on the last patch idea to maybe tip it over mk11 but its completley irrelevant.

Additionaly if both mk11 and mk1 didnt have drawn out, drip feed content release cycles(and especially mk11) they both would have even less actual months of "support"

Atleast with mk1 the game from a gameplay perspective is enjoyable to play and in an decent state, but it also majorly fucked up on alot of other aspects as a product which again similarly to the mk11 situation when it was abandond leaves a sour taste in the mouths of fans and again pisses them of, fostering even more negatvie perception of nrs.

Good luck on whatever their next game is, but if its anything short of perfect, i suspect it will bomb outright and leave NRS totally screwed.

A sholin monks like game in the mk univers(sequal or not) would be their safest course of action.
