I'm actually kind of glad they dialed back the intro dialogue from MKX/MK11. I liked the banter in MKX, but the vast majority of MK11's intro dialogue was terrible or just stupid. Also, the fact that (apparently) just about anyone at NRS could submit dialogue to be used in intros made them all non-canon and very boring to me.
Yeah absolutely. Some of the dialogue were so bland, it seemed like they came out to have a friendly meet-up instead of fighting each other to death.

Also in MKX the dialogue started right along with their walk-ins, and MK11 they had seperate walk-in animations and then they stood just talking for 1-2-1 lines.

Every once in a blue moon I would watch intro compilations of MKX, but any time I tried with 11, I would end up shutting it off 5 minutes in.
Same with Injustice 1 and 2 actually now that I think about.

Terminator having hands down the worst dialogues and interactions in the whole game

What platform was used for the trailer, showcase after and for al the content creators later? The trailer for example wasn’t really flawless performance wise, it can be seen it had issues in Kitana/Mileena segment. So if PS5/beefy PC can’t take this, how can old gen. And that’s why I said those spec requirements are not to be believed.
The tech referenced was just using a solid state drive, which the current gen consoles FINALLY have started using. PCs have been using them since what, Windows Vista? Windows 7 for sure. Windows 10 is like 8 years old already. I do believe the specs, however we are also talking about a port by a third party.
Just a quick reminder that the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X on launch already were using quite outdated tech inside... at least compared to PCs.

Been playing MK11 story mode recently and I have to say.. unless the reveals coming show the fatalities and fatals have been edited... MK11 is so much gorier. I do love the new MK look, but I think pulling back the gore is not what I would do if I was art director.

Just check say, Mileena

vs Sub MK11

Now I get Fatalities only are of interest for the start of the games life, but fatals are going to be part of it for the entire run of MK1... I know some people are not into the gore, but for me... the gore is honestly one of the main draws for me. With action movies getting more and more pg rated.... MK is like a hold out to the 80s and 90s when we all rooted for the man with the flame thrower or the acid spraying un of some time. I love r-rated action and horror movies. I love gory mk... and honestly... so far this is the only thing about MK1 that is bothering me.

The gore in the reveal trailer was good.. so I am stil hoping that the editing of the fatalities in the trailer just cut out the juicy bits.... but the fatals definitely seem tonned down.

Sub Zero's Fatality MK1

The MK1 fatalities seem more gory than the fatal blows.... maybe as they know they will not be used as much? I know streamers have been putting a lot of pressure on about advertising on youtube and I am sure, but have no proof, that there is pressure from the large majors.. I mean espn isn't going to broadcast evo MK... they even banned certain outfits for characters in SF. So maybe tonning down the fatals, but keeping the fatalities at MKx levels was a caculated plan?

Grittiness and realism is something they should toy with in my opinion. It's fine to go with hyper-realism but historically that's not what MK has been about. It's always been tied to humor and has been somewhat tongue-in-cheek corny until lately. I've never been nuts about how jarring it is to switch to fatal blows and finishing moves at 30 fps. I would welcome shortening those animations and simplifying them for brevity.

I do not think hyperrealism goes hand in hand with gore. Plenty of cartoons are gory as hell. Just look at Japanese cartoons or stuff like that Invincible cartoon.

As for Fatal bloes... I like that they are shorter in MK1. I also like that by mixing them with the kameo, we should geta lot more variety in them as well. Seeing 3 people in a bracket playing the same main, might have different Kameos, and so different fatal blows with different properties. That is all cool.

I'm specifically talking about the gore. Maybe the fatalities will hold the ground... but it is clear the fatals are much less gory. I mean just look at all the blood in the MK11 ones, compared to the MK1 ones.

Dude, boon said they put a drone for sonya, but they wanted " a drone" for anyone, so they added the kameos. Sonya is definitely in the main roster.

I think them pulling back on the gore was a specific choice. Boon has said there’s a new committee on fatalities and they pitch ideas and make sure they don’t go too far:

  • Some fatalities DO get rejected. Over the years, NetherRealm has established a sort of “fatality committee” that weighs in on pitches for the series’ iconic finishing moves. Ideas come in from around the company, but Boon has the final say. “Yeah, there’s a line, you know… there have been plenty that I’ve sent back and said, ‘no, that’s just crossing the line. We’re not doing stuff like that.’ And then they would get disappointed. But enough get through that they’re good.”
Personally I don’t mind the less realistic and gory but more comical style of fatalities

Somehow
I think the decision to move away from gore is dictated by content creators and players. Not by us who love the game and follow the series and are used to everything we see, but players who create sales. If you go to youtube and watch some reaction videos, almost every content creator who doesn't play fighting games criticizes MK. Especially MK 11. There is a video with about 400k views where a person says "Street Fighter is better than MK just because there is no gore, I advise you to buy SF." There are phrases like “Cool, but I definitely won’t play it because of gore”, “It’s a shame that they don’t have a mode where you can turn off all these finishing moves and blood”, “Do not allow children to play this game and watch videos on youtube." In terms of advertising the game, it sucks. So NRS are looking for the perfect balance, I think. Leave some gore in the game, but make it with humor or bright colors.

yea, that's most likely the compromise they needed to take.

Do I like it? Not really. Gore was the staple of MK. I started playing when I was like 5-6 and yet I grew up not killing anyone irl. Didn't have any nightmares too.

Do I accept it? I have to. I'm still in love with the series. Current graphic can be hyperrealistic sometimes and that could affect kiddos much more than pixelated MK1-3 spine rip back then.

Kind hard to judge the gore with only a small sample of the game. But the jax fatality has plenty. And during the fight you still see lots flying.

But imo, if dialing down the gore means the devs have an easier time creating the game its totally worth it. I remember the mk11 dev stories of ppl almost having ptsd for looking at gore photos all day. That kind of shit simply isn't worth a little gore in a game.

I don't care about gore in fatalities (because I don't care about fatalities), but I do like to see lots of blood during the battle. I think it's fun when your character strikes a win pose after a grueling fight and is covered in blood and their clothes are torn and damaged. I don't know how much of it was in MKX or 11, but I also liked how in MK9 you can get your opponent's blood on you too. There's just something I like about the characters looking like they've been through the grinder after a tough fight.

The Xbox series s version of SF6 looks like the last gen version and since Nrs are doing a switch port it is odd not to see it on the other last gen consoles

im guessing on series s mk1 will have way less detail in those new stages
The Xbox Series S version of Street Fighter 6 has some odd technical decisions. It's native resolution is lower than the PlayStation 4 Pro version, which makes no sense to Digital Foundry, among other things.

Also, NetherRealm Studios is not doing the Switch port of Mortal Kombat 1, that's contracted out to another company.

They are doing the Xbox Series S version though, and I am curious as to how it'll differ (outside of resolution) from Xbox Series X.

Uh, MK4 is irrefutably a part of the 3D era. 3D rendered graphics, models, arenas and the introduction of the weapon system.
And yet it plays far more like Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, inspite of being in 3D. It was also a proper arcade game. It is different than what came after.

Yeah, MK4 might be 3D, but it's definitely part of the Tobias Era. It's got nothing to do with the PS2 games.

This has been a thing since MK9. He always mentions the fatality council/meetings.

the more the graphics advance - the less gore I want to see. I liked the gore on the older games because it was very unrealistic. MK11 levels of gore left not much room for imagination, also knowing NRS employees suffered PTSD while creating these visuals just doesn't sit well with me, I can see why they chose a more "comic" art style for MK1 and I am 100% for it.

Even I was shocked and repulsed by the amount of details they put in anatomy of body and gore. I have zero doubts about this artists suffering from stress disorder after working on it.

I too am liking the direction they went with this iteration as it still looks very nice but lacks the super high detailing.

Thats crazy because I felt the complete opposite. MK11 characters actually talked to eachother.
X had some great ones for sure, but do you have any idea how many intros in MKX go like this
Liu Kang: Goro
Goro: You
Liu Kang: I look forward to this fight

Holy shit - YES. The MKX intros (the majority of them) were HORRIBLE. HORRRRIBLE. They get three lines in total, and half the time the lines would be each one calling the other one's name. Fuck that.

MK11's dialogue added a LOT to the personality of the characters. I didn't care for the sick burns (or lack thereoff), I cared about learning more about how this character thinks or where his ideas and loyalties lay.

Reminds me of that The Simpson's Quote:

Redneck 1: Hey you, let's fight.
Redneck 2: Them's fightin' words.
