I think what most people didn't understand is that these weren't the same licenses back in the day. If you don't have the license, you don't have a choice. It's often a separate negotiation and there's no guarantee that the terms will be agreed to.

It's not likely that Capcom just randomly decided not to have X-Men.. It's far more likely that there were rights issues that couldn't be resolved in time for Infinite.

Fox owned performance rights for the X-Men, Marvel owned the Avengers, etc. until Marvel bought them out again in 2019. And Sony owns performance rights for Spiderman, so anybody saying stuff like "If it's a Marvel game they better have Spiderman in it" probably just doesn't understand how these things work.
If they can't include Spiderman and the X-Men, then they shouldn't bother!!!

Sony only has the rights to Spider-man for film. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 came out on switch almost two years ago and has all the X-men and Spider-Man characters. As long as the version of Spider-Man isn’t the movie version, Marvel can do what ever they want with him in games, comics, toys and merchandise.

This was also the case with X-men and Fantastic Four. The reason they chose not to use those characters in MVCI was to fuck over Fox because they were passed Fox wouldn’t sell them the movie rights back, so they basically buried those characters because they didn’t want to help promote characters they couldn’t make movie money off of.

The only characters Disney does not have exclusive film rights to right now are Spider-Man and Spider-Man related characters (though they reached a deal to use Spider-Man in the MCU) and the Incredible Hulk who Universal Studios own the rights to all Hulk SOLO movies. This is why there haven’t been any solo Hulk movies since the Ed Norton movie because Marvel doesn’t want to share profits with Universal, so they just put Hulk in team up movies.

So to recap, Marvel, from a video game standpoint, can use any of their characters they want, and they ALWAYS could use any characters they wanted, they simply chose not to promote certain characters for a time as a way to pressure Fox into giving them the movie rights back to certain characters, which is now no longer an issue since Disney outright bought Fox.

That Don't Impress Me Much
Since you guys mention the Spider-man, this sorta bums me out that we have not seen characters like Spider-Woman, Arachne, etc. I think there is even a comic from 10 years ago (maybe not that long). where Jessica Drew and Ms. Marvel (now Captain Marvel) are having coffee smoking. Even so...I liked her power-set and costumes.

Sidebar- when i was a kid in grade school we had someone dress as spider-man come to our school. I want to say it was like 1990 or 91 maybe earlier...but they gave us a free comic and he fought Typhoid Mary. In hindsight that was kinda messed up. I think that was my first Spider-man comic. I know it was when other IPs like Ninja Turtles, GI Joe, etc were more popular at the time.

Even if this is true, it helps to underscore the same point— that this was out of Capcom’s hands and up to the rightsholders, not the game conpany.

Ultimately if non-MCU characters were not going to be allowed due to Disney’s row over licensing with Fox, then there’s nothing Capcom could do about it other than release the game without them.

Ultimately these decisions are not made by the game company. They’re negotiations, and the IP holders have the final say.

The blame is on Marvel more than Capcom, so how is NRS going to be any better?

That's my point — that people should realize that if something similar happens here, it's out of the company's hands, and not some random decision made by the devs to spite the fans.

Nobody can please fans. Not all of them, it's always the same story and those who aren't pleased always "scream" the loudest.

It has to be Sheeva, I mean I am glad they said "balance", so it has to be character specific

Now I don't need to practice D,U, and D,B,3 for the next season anymore :D

True but Infinite died. It died a long slow death.

The Community wasn't happy, the casual fanbase were not happy with no X-men, the characters are just functions statement certainly did not help and people were content to keep on playing Marvel 3 instead.

Infinite was dead on arrival. We all knew it was bad from the first trailer. Just another bad licensed game with no funding and no forsight. Not rocket science.

Right, I’m just pointing out that this is a non issue now. If NRS is making a Marvel fighting game , there Is no reason these characters couldn’t be used other than Disney saying no, but Disney no longer has a reason to say no, so I fully expect X-men / FF4 characters to be in the game.

game informer:

game informer:
are you excited about that idea?

ED:

TBH, my issue with MVCI wasn't even the lack of X-men, it was the lack of newcomers. Only 5 characters in the base roster had never been playable in the previous games. While they did bring more as DLC, those were characters that should have already been in the base roster. Especially considering one of the DLC was one of the main villains. And while the Marvel side was focusing on the MCU, it was still missing characters that really should have been no brainers. IE Loki, Daredevil, Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man etc.

About the whole function debacle, I think it would have gone over a bit better if they had used Sentinel as an example rather than Magneto.

Should the title of this thread be changed? I... I mean, Kombat Pack 4 and 5 sound wild at this point. Pure wishful thinking.

I think Kombat Pack 3 is still realistic.

Considering the rapid developments on AT&T and the WB sale going on with Discovery ... things may get really interesting in the coming years ...
