Uncover the icon’s alternative skins, and learn about NetherRealm’s experience working with Sylvester Stallone.

Dominic CiancioloStory & Voiceover Director, NetherRealm Studio

Fellow Fighters, at long last, Rambo joins fellow 1980s action movie icons RoboCop and the Terminator as part of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and Kombat Pack 2. We at NetherRealm Studios couldn’t be more excited about Rambo joining the fight.
Drawing inspiration from the first three films in the Rambo series – First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Rambo III – our gameplay designers looked to distill the essence of his particular style of combat. That’s why our Rambo, as he does in the films, relies more on stealth than he does on gunplay. He uses the environment itself as a weapon, deploying a variety of traps which use elements like tripwires, swinging logs and hidden mines. Of course, Rambo is also famous for his skill with a knife and compound bow. Both are a core part of his moveset and are used in very distinct ways.

As with all of our guest fighters, our visual artists worked diligently to recreate Rambo’s classic look and feel. They carefully studied the early films, going frame by frame to catalog the details of his wardrobe and weapons. As part of this work, our character team fully reproduced Rambo’s two iconic looks from First Blood – his drifter look from the top of the film and his guerilla warfare look from the film’s epic climax. The end result of their work is stunning. Rambo looks like he stepped right out of the original movies and into Mortal Kombat 11.

Knowing that Sylvester Stallone would return to voice the character made the stakes for getting the lines right very high. All of the hard work to perfect the script paid off when we finally got to record it. Stallone enthusiastically jumped into the performance, bringing the words to life in exactly the way we had hoped.

For me, getting to work with a legendary actor as he plays one his most iconic roles was a thrilling experience. As a Voiceover Director, it doesn’t get any better. My favorite memory of the session was the sound of Stallone chuckling.

As he performed the lines, he noticed the many references we had included, not only from the Rambo films, but also from the rest of his body of work. When you play, listen closely to the banter for references to The Expendables, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man and more. It was a real kick to see that he was so entertained. Hopefully, Rambo fans will have as much fun with the experience as did the man himself.

You guys being so excited about guest characters are the main reason why such cool badasses as Reptile, Ermac, Havik, Tanya and <pick your favourite character from MK that's not in the game> are being left behind.

F*CK GUEST CHARACTERS! ONLY PURE MK ROSTER! I've spoken. Don't try to change my mind, please.
So what you are saying is that you are going to be extra salty after Rambo players take you off the board?

Bruce Campbell 4 MK!!!
I’m still most excited for Mileena, and very salty at any guest that isn’t Ash

With that said

This absolutely looks like a character I would play, holy fuck he looks fun. I love how brutal he looks. Definitely gonna spend some time with Sly

I ought to be working right now, but uhh, nah I'm too excited by this dope trailer and watching Rambo smack around all the chum. So of course I couldn't resist diving in and analyzing it to try to figure out some of his moves and how he'll play.

Kabal (0:20)
  • Uses an advancing mid string ending with an overhead
  • Gets oki with mid or low kick starter, then stabs Kabal and causes bleed DoT--could be part of the kick string or a grapple special move, but the bleed appears to be meterless
  • Does an in-place drop kick (OH like EB b4?). Not sure how useful that will be since it looks slow, but maybe good plus frames on block
  • Only bow action we see, but Rambo seems to enter a bow stance: He pulls his bow and waits, fires two separate high shots, and puts the bow away. Will want to see if he can delay and cancel an arrow once nocked. And ofc how quickly he can cancel the stance.
  • Uses a slide move to low-profile a high projectile and cause knock down. MB adds a second hit that has a KB, probably for sliding under a projectile. The slide could be a normal button, with the amplify coming from an ability slot.
Erron Black (0:36)
  • Back throw animation. Leaves Rambo pretty close for oki.
  • Rambo crouches and triggers a swing arm trap. Looks like it hits low and I'm betting it's directable (close, mid, far, very far). Rambo may low-profile high attacks while triggering.
  • He crouches again and triggers a snare trap that lifts EB off his feet. Seems very similar to Spawn's v3 Raising Hell (db3) chain attack--a slow-moving but full-screen low projectile.
  • Next Rambo low-crawls forward, avoiding EB's high FB; when he reaches him, he gets a multi-hit strike with KB.
    • Very interesting. No doubt will be long recovery, but it looks like it starts very quickly, so it could be good for dodging some advancing highs and mids.
    • EB seems recovered by the time the move hits him, so the KB doesn't appear to be a punish.
Kabal (0:49)
  • Rambo uses a high-starter string (but with some advancing range) to get a meterless launch. The launching hit appears to hit mid (important later).
  • Ends the juggle with a command grab or other special. Might be amplifying to switch sides and/or get bleed damage. Leaves him very close--good for throw loops??
  • Uses another three-hit string ending with an overhead
  • Forward throw--has a KB. Maybe a unique requirement… could be it triggers when oppo is in a bleed state?
Terminator (1:00)
  • Advancing kick string that changes sides (maybe only on hit, like Lao's s121?)
  • Next, looks to be the same advancing mid starter he used on Kabal, but with a (safe?) kick ender instead of the (unsafe?) overhead
  • Rambo gets tossed around a bit, then uses an explosive u3. Looks like he back rolls as part of the u3 animation, which isn't great for close pressure, but might have good plus frames to compensate, since Term seems stuck in hit stun for a long time.
  • Rambo grabs two machine guns makes Term eat hot lead. Amplified on startup--could mean faster startup, more damage, longer duration? Also some of the bullets hit lower on Term's body--maybe the amplify makes some of the bullets hit mid?
Erron Black (1:14)
  • Rambo uses the same high-starter string he used on Kabal, but uses a grab ending instead of the mid-hitting launcher. Built-in strike/throw to mix someone trying to block the launcher?? Can it really be true?? Can Rambo really be this badass???
  • Rambo crouches and hits EB with a swinging log trap. Amplifies on startup, so I'm guessing this is the MB version of the swing arm trap he used on EB earlier? Insane counterzoning tool!
Kabal (1:20)
  • Rambo uses a mid-starting string that ends in a drop kick for huge knockback.
  • Kabal lifts his head to look at Rambo while still on his back--one of the new delayed wakeup animations.
  • Rambo sets a claymore mine in front of him, which a bit later detonates on contact for a launch. Seems crazy good, so there must be a downside. I wouldn't be surprised if works like EB's TNT, in that the blast may hit anyone (you or oppo) who's close to it, and Rambo may even trigger it himself if he walks on it.
  • Claymores are usually directional though, so it may be the case that it can only be triggered from one side (facing away from Rambo when he sets it). It does appear like it detonates when Kabal steps in front of it, not on it. So it will be a great thing for him to setup and then do some zoning while the oppo can't easily close in on him.
  • Rambo catches Kabal in the air with his FB. He unslings his bow to give the move extra forward range and it might even hit overhead!
  • The FB and fatality are epic. 'Nuff said.
Tentative conclusions… Rambo looks like a brawler's dream. We didn't see evidence of great footsies ability, so he has to brawl his way in, but once he's there, he's got overheads, throw string mixups, a meterless launcher, and possibly a command grab to make it count. His claymore will make it difficult for oppos to use their best footsie moves on him. Looks to be a king of counterzoning, with low-profiling ranged specials and unique movement options (slide kick, crawl). And he'll have some full-screen presence too, with a bow stance, snare trap move, and machine gun special.

Let the nightmare begin!

Bruce Campbell 4 MK!!!
The fact that they got Stallone's likeness and voice makes me even more excited for this. This is probably one of the best additions they added for the game.

Now if Ash doesn't come in next the KP, the only other guest character I can think of that can probably top him is the bride from kill bill.
This

Ash is absolutely the only guest I’m advocating for right now, but the bride is my second choice. She screams MK.

Rambo is probably tied with Joker for being the best looking guest in this game though

In honor of this trailer dropping on my day off, I am rewatching First Blood and Rambo: First Blood II for the first time since I was like 10 years old.
Watched First Blood last night. It really holds up! I hadn't seen it since I was in highschool and forgot so much of it. We watched Rambo 3 a few months ago and it's so goofy and over the top it's hard to remember that the series started on a much more somber and measured tone.
