Was thinking about the characters I choose to use in fighting games, and I noticed an interesting (but obvious) trend. All my mains, for the most part, have some type of teleport.

(UMK3: HSmoke, Ermac)
(MKT: HSmoke, Ermac, Scorpion)
(MK9: HSmoke, KL, Scorpion)
(Injustice: Ares, MMH)
(MKX: Scorpion, Shinnok)
(Injustice 2: Supergirl)
(MK11: Scorpion)
(SF4: M. Bison)

And unfortunately, teleports are the #1 universal complaint in every single NRS game. They also are complained about in other games too. But man, NRS players, from the bad to the very best, doesn’t matter. They will complain about teleports literally until they are nerfed.

Anyway, that’s not what this thread is about. I want to know what main attributes, skills, special moves, abilities, etc etc are generally an attractive quality to you generally speaking. Meaning if a character has it in a fighting game, you more than likely are going to be using that character.

For me there’s obviously also a lot of other stuff that I look for in a character. Like their normals, fundamentals, good AA’s, walk speed, mobility, good frame data, etc. But I’m more talking about specifically ONE thing that attracts you universally to a character. As I said for me, that’s a character with a teleport. And It could even be something as trivial as how they look. I’m just curious if other people have a trend like I do with their mains.

Blade4693

VIVIVI
Umm......Im not weird I promise but I have a thing for chains.

Lobo in Injustice
Birdie in SFV
Cody in SFV
Scarecrow in Injustice 2
Spawn in MK11

I just love the sounds they make and how they look and clank around all metally and just just just HNNG!!!

Let’s see whose fire burns hotter
I like characters with cool fighting moves, character and visuals. Liu Kang is one of them. Also I’m a big fan of Fire and Lighting elements, but I don’t play Raiden. Cage’s f344 makes me play him a lot in MK11. But I gotta say, PARRIES are my favorite things in the games.
Liu Kang (all games)
Kung Lao MKX
Taven MKA
Fahkumram/Jin/Leroy Tekken
Batman/Superman/Canary Injustice

KutlessMyth

mental and fundamental
for me it's high walkspeed footsy characters or plus frame cancels (or hitting like a truck in hindsight)
MK9- Jade Skarlet
Injustice- Superman Batman
MKX- D'Vorah (literally only character i learned, most fun character ive ever played in any fighting game, so sad to see her playstyle change so much in mk11)
Injustice 2- Superman, Black Manta, Raphael
MK11- please send help i have no idea who to play in this game
Tekken 7- Shaheen

Kiss the Missile

Red Messiah
I have to like the character above all else. I'll play nearly any playstyle as long as I think the character is sick.
Combo potential is probably what comes after. I can't fuck with a characters with low damage/short simple combos
Last, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm lowkey a hipster when it comes to who I play. If a character is super common, I tend to not use them or if I do I try to play them in a different way.

MK9 - Sektor
Inj - Deathstroke, Doomsday
MKX- Reptile, Torr, Sektor
Inj2 - Bane
MK11 - Character Crisis
Tekken 7 - Feng Wei
SFV - Seth
Gran Blue - Ladiva

Edmund

Kitana & Skarlet
Mk9 and Mkx: Kitana for the combo potential and the versatility of far range and mid range

injustice: raven

injustice 2: star fire

Soul Calibur: Talim for the speed and fluidity in moves AND xianghua for the mixups and personality

Street Fighter: Chun Li for the pokes

i say that my theme for any type of game (whether it be fighting, tactical, MOBA, etc) is to have range and the ability to create distance, Talim and Xianghua are sort of exceptions to this rule, but even in games like League I prefer people with more ranfe

Special Forces Sonya Up-player
I like characters with some kind of set up on knockdown.

MKX, special forces drone setups. Sorcerer spell setups, Konjurer Egg setup etc. I loved MKX cos there were so many characters which had these kind of tools.

Injustice 2 Cyborg, with the missiles and drone.

Arqwart

D'Vorah for KP2 copium
I like female characters
This combined with a generally slippery skillset. I'm an oddball when it comes to fighting games cause I generally do NOT like exclusively playing the 50/50 and stagger mixup teeter-totter stuff. I much prefer hit and run, long range pokes / footsies, and zoning. If I DO play pressure, I want guaranteed mind games and powerful turn loops to keep my opponent from throwing off my groove.

To summarize since the topic is about one thing: I want to play like an annoying asshole and the characters below always let me do so.

MK9: Kitana, Mileena, Sindel, Smoke
MKX: Venomous D'Vorah, All 3 Kitana variations, Piercing Mileena, Imposter Shinnok, Thunder God Raiden, Aftershock Tremor
MK11: Buzzed D'Vorah, Jaded / ED Jade, Highborn / Fearless Kitana, The Spins Kabal, Seeing Double Noob

Funny enough, I'm pretty sure I would absolutely love MK11 Johnny.. if he weren't Johnny. Smug bastard is nails on a chalkboard personified.

kick kick
Good honest mids and primarily rushdown.
(MKX Kano, MK11 Jax).
Above all else they have to be cool as fuck design wise. MK11 Kano's design is just lame, what happened to the elbow blades? That shit was dope.

I agree about Kano. He was such a step backward in character design.

I tend to want strong pressure that will kill people for mashing along with setups. The ability to zone is also nice, but not necessary.

Injustice: Harley, Wonder Woman, Shazam

MK X: D'vorah (all) and Cybernetic Kano

I2: Harley and I tried to like WW but she was way too different. Harley in this game was, on paper, my perfect character. Shame about the horrific whiffing issues.

MK 11: D'vorah and FoN Cetrion. Speaking of horrific whiffing issues...

FoughtDragon01

Ask me about my Mileena agenda.
Not gonna lie, I like to go a bit unga-bunga in my fighting games, so heavy offense is somewhere up on my list along with nice ranged normals. Johnny Cage usually scratches that itch (especially A-List & Showstopper), and it damn sure helps that I love his personality. Mileena's usually a go-to pick for me as well, but that's an entirely different conversation.

Once I started taking fighting games more seriously and began to really learn mechanics, I found that I really like aggressive characters, usually a mix of rushdown, combo potential, and zoning.

For me, my mains:

- Mortal Kombat (2011): Kitana, Mileena
  • Killer Instinct (2013): Fulgore, Sadira, Orchid
  • Mortal Kombat XL: Mileena, Kitana
  • Mortal Kombat 11: Kitana, Sub-Zero, Jade

It's kind of changed over time. I think in general though characters that have good walk speed and a solid fundamental ground game seem to appeal to me. Fei Long, Karin, Orchid. Although in Injustice 2 I really enjoyed Cyborg, and in MK11 I've mostly just played Raiden.

In NRS games it's forcing the opp to jump w low traps/zoning tools, then having a good anti-air.

If that really doesn't exist then good air control/air mobility.

Basically I want to dictate when the opp can jump like I own their up button and/or good air mobility.

Cyrax, Firestorm, D'vorah/Brainiac, Tanya type

Everyone Has A Path
My taste has changed over time, going from high mobility poke-down characters like Vega to big bodies with good keep out and mixup potential.

SFIV - Vega
SFV - S1 Vega, S2 Balrog, S3 Ed, S4 Honda
Tekken 7 - Bob and Negan
DBFZ - Originally Tien/Piccolo/Nappa
Smash - Bowser
KI - Shadow Jago, Tusk
MK9 - Kano
MKX - Kano and Goro
MK11 - Kung Lao and Kotal Kahn

Initially my goal was to play only good guy characters or the main hero, hence the name protagonist. That kind of fell off though since I just found the other characters cool or I wanted to try something different. I also like characters with cancels as well (hence Hwoarang and Cyborg)

MK9: Subzero/Jonny Cage/Liu Kang
Injustice 1: Cyborg/Batman (also played Bane, was inspired by Snake Eyes EVO run playing Zangief)
MK10: Subzero
Injustice 2: Cyborg (he's a bad guy in this game which I hated, but I just liked his playstyle a lot, also cancels)
MK11: Liu Kang (Storymode did him justice, had to play the character)

Other: Stevefox and Hwoarang in Tekken.

I almost exclusively play LK cyber ninjas and/or setup/trap characters.
MK9: Cyrax, Cyber Sub-Zero, Sub Zero
MKX: Triborg but mostly Cyrax and Cyber Sub. Also Demo Sonya, Konjurer Alien, Hunter Predator, etc.
MK11: Frost-byte Frost. I play some AoK Joker and Final Judgement Terminator too. Currently learning Avalanche Sub-Zero.

I like thinking one step ahead and coercing my opponent's movement with setups and traps. It's like really fast, real-time chess, sorta?

I'll be playing Robocop if he is indeed DLC, which I am hoping is just a rumor btw.

I haven't played Street Fighter in years, but I liked picking Guile. Slowest Sonic Boom, then rush in... not sure if that's a legit setup strategy for Guile. Never played SF at as much of a high level.

NeroOps

Death Before Dishonor
If i see something interesting in a character i'll use them.
My character selection is too random to even consider having a pattern.
MK9 - Ermac, Smoke
MKX - Sonya, Jacqui, Liu Kang
MK11 - Shao Kahn, Jacqui, Subzero, Baraka, Sonya, Raiden, Spawn
Inj1 - Wonder Woman, Raven, Sinestro
Inj2 - Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta, Leo(TMNT), Starfire, Wonder Woman

I play too many fighting games to even list all the characters i use so i just listed nrs games from mk9 and up.
