Should NRS legalize custom variations for competitive play?

I tried to throw a yo-yo away. It was impossible.
As a DOA player, randomness can be chaotic and too much of it can be bad.
I don't know DOA, so I don't know of you mean like randomness like random things happen in the game, like things sometimes hitting and sometimes not. Random things like that, some of the towers, or Zions shoe exploding are not fun, I agree. But if it's random like a player getting through to winners final using a character most have not seen or some small school beats the no 1 seed in the NCAA basketball tournament, that's fun

No, example with jade, her advantage with her lack of combos is her air projectile and ground projectile.

The fact that characters like sub, kabal, Kitana can just add this to counter her throws off the whole balance of the game. I will never be in favor of customs.
Well this also assumes that the characters have a variation specifically designed to counter a Jade players set up. The fact that variations have to be designed ahead of time and can't be modified on the fly means that they have to have the variation planned ahead of time. Additionally there are some matchups already that I think could potentially dominate Jade. Scorpion for example. I feel can easily counter Jades zoning options with his teleport. (Though to be fair Scorpion's good no matter what the MU so maybe a bad example)

I think that something like this to be somewhat balanced would maybe have to have a limit of possibly 3 custom variations per character so that you can't have every possible combination known to man on stand by for countering. In short to gain a strategic option, you need to sacrifice something of equal value.

If you compare it to card games like Hearhtstone, where people could potentially play a completely random deck of 30 cards (which never happens anyway), then changing like 3 moves per variation shouldn’t be that big of a deal. After some time there will be a meta with the same 2-3 (strongest) variations of each character anyway. Not much potential for chaos and randomness imo. (Easy to patch as well) Additional to that, there are already some limitations in the game for custom variants. Some moves can’t be used with certain other moves in the same variation. (Which would be another way to fix/patch things: If something is too broken, just make specific combinations „clash“ and therefore unusable.)

(And just to clear up my comparison: I think card games and fighting games have a lot in common, aside from the execution aspect. A lot of decision making, thinking 5 steps ahead, mind games, ressource management, tempo and so on)

They already have shown the cons in there: You cannot add abilities that collide with each other. The pros: Think of a way to defeat the opponents.

Yes. The variations are all over the place right now in terms of usability. At least with customs, the characters with weaker variations could cobble together something more usable.

Also, I'm sure everyone has at least one move that they would like to see available for a tourny variation. But, with NRS' current philosophy, there's a high chance that you are going to see that move come to a tourny variation bundled with 1-2 completely worthless moves that are also still waiting to be added to a variation. Many of the current variations have so many mismatched moves that any coming variations will have similarly mismatched moves, just because that's what was left over.

I think people are HEAVILY overstating how hard match ups would be to learn and NRS already has a built in method for balancing the abilities. Jade has attacks that CANNOT be paired together because they conflict. Baraka's command grab takes up two slots so he can't pair command grab with his godlike launcher and so forth.

They can tweak all those for universal design as in all custom abilities that lead to combos are TWO slots. Lots of very straightforward solutions that would/did work in the beta. They put checks and balances in even during the beta.

People act like you could make any combination of ridiculous moves with no oversight.

All too easy...
1. Everyones getting gimmicked out already while we all learn the game

2. Waiting one year to add customs will not reduce the gimmicks, it'll only force everyone to get gimmicked all over again while we learn everything else new.

No need to make 2 seperate periods of time where everyone has to learn all the new gimmicks. Put all the gimmicks out now so they can be ironed out sooner rather than later and then in a year we are playing the actual game instead of starting from scratch. Legalize customs asap or at the bare minimum let everyone know when the plan to legalize them is.

This is an unfortunate side effect of trying to cater to both the FGC and casual gamers. Custom variations would be dope as long as they aren't obnoxiously broken. NRS would more than likely have to take a look at the variations prior to tourney play for balance purposes. If custom variations remain banned, then they will fade away as casual gamers only play this game for a solid 2-4 months.

I mean Custom Loadouts can`t be worse than current Gerras?
Imo they didnt playtest most of the Character and Skills (they focused on 1 viable variation mostly) cuz many Setup Skills have horrible Recovery (Dark Priest / God Ray / Molotov) nobody ever tested this stuff (you cant get a safe setup when you knock enemys through the entire screen).

I only use ranked approved variations myself but mainly play casual matches with the competitive requirement turned off so I can practice against everything in the game, since they're likely to add more variations.

There's alot of messed up stuff out there... and it is definitely an issue for me the UI doesn't clearly express what moves a character has equipped.

I'd for now rather they add a third ranked variation for every character and fix the half-assed variations that make no sense.

If they allow customs some shit should be adjusted and the UI needs to let players be informed of what character they're facing.

I'm on the fence though with having only 2 per character and many just being baffling whether its better to just "fuck it, allow customs" if NRS isn't going to do the work to make preselected variations more fair.

After sinking hours into the game and seeing how it is shaping up to be, I'm now all for kustom variations.

There are simply too many characters who have too many moves locked away - which aren't available in tournaments presets either.

Let kustoms rock.

im for kustom variations but how would it work? wouldnt you not know which moves you opponent has until they use it on you? if you had a minute to see which moves your opponent equipped then it seems fair. like another user said theres way too many moves characters have locked away. if theres no kustom variations at least bring in more variations.

The game is unbalanced so instead of keeping what you have and balancing that lets instead work with a higher amount of variables, making it harder to balance but supposedly more fun? Whats gonna end up happening is you're gonna have those same comparisons but worse. Isn't this why we have ranked and non ranked?
The ironic thing is that the beta was more balanced than this shit lol I play Geras and it’s laughable how much better he is than 99% of the cast

I definitely think it would be more interesting. It may be the case that over time people could find out the absolute best combination for each character which could make the game more balanced overall. I suppose it could go too far but we won't be able to find out if it can't be experimented with.

Go over there!
MK11 should work like real fighting tournaments. So just like in MMA, each fighter should limit their moves to two variations, pick one of their variations, and inform their opponent of their entire move list. Otherwise, how would MMA fighters know how to prepare for a fight if their opponent could use some unexpected moves or combination of moves? MK11 should work just like MMA.

Also, it's a good thing that NFL teams give their playbooks to each other prior to a game. Because how would the Patriots win if they couldn't lab against their opponents' plays beforehand?

I was about to get hella mad at you for the MMA stuff and then I realized it was all sarcasm lol. I love this. I agree with your message.

If the game goes this way, specials will have to be a lot less prominent and normals will have to be far more compelling to keep the game balance going.

Instead of custom variations I'd just prefer all of a characters "slots" be split between the two tournament variations. If that is two much for only two varietions make a third tournament variation.

The problem with custom varietions is that down the road when characters are more figured out it will defeat the purpose of having variations in the first place. Everyone will just use the optimal load out. Which of course could be said about the current variations, but i still think its better than letting everyone cherry pick what they want.

That said if they add it in i certainly won't complain.

I love the idea of customs, but realistically it must be a nightmare to balance.

I really hate how they marketed the game based on "oh yes custom variations xoxox" and then got cold feet when it came to competitive play.
