Fujin!
I played with pre-made variations to start, then switched to custom variations so I could use the exact moves I wanted + it was more fun.

The vast majority of my matches were using custom variations.

I played customs exclusively. I loved trying out all of the different moves and molding the characters to best fit my play style.

I also never switched, once I figured out the moves I preferred. I set them up every day in just a few seconds; skins, gear, and all.

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
Custom only ftw .... it feels good having some degree of freedom in the game and choose what suits most to your own gameplay style .... for me, custom variations is a must even on future MK games from now then :)

I played custom, but I think pre-made is the way to go for ranked/competitive standard.

Still, organizers can always have the possibility of making their own tournament rules with custom variations allowed. Many competitive games have this side competitions with special feats.

I played with exclusively custom variations, and used very easy towers to experiment until I found a loadout that suited me.

Not necessarily an optimal, top tier loadout.
A loadout for me.

We deserve the freedom to choose.
This exactly. I didn’t choose the “best” — I chose what I liked.

I didn’t choose “Gutted” for Baraka, because I preferred some other stuff. I didn’t choose the Misery Blade stance for Scorpion, because I liked the fire stuff (minus the fireball), and I don’t like stances in general.

i chose custom but tbh as long as the preset options are much better than in the beta, i'll be fine with whatever.

That being said i think a much better route would have been to sell this as a variation system with a game mode where u can pick abilities from every variation, rather than multiple abilities and they stick us with preset customs. The difference is the variations in mk11 had their own personalities but it feels like that won't be the case this time. Also it feels like we're loosing something rather than gaining something.

Played custom variations only, plan on deleting all the presets and having all my characters customized. Just hoping during towers we get to fight against our created variations instead of the presets

Here's to hoping.
Only custom. I only once used Chain Reaction from Scorpion because the two abilities only work combined and take up three slots, so nothing there to customize :D

First off, it has to be said that NRS handled this whole thing very poorly by waiting until the 11th hour to confirm what everyone already suspected. Second off, I don't compete so my opinion is worth jack all. My vote goes to custom variations just because they should stick by their new features. If time is an issue, they could simply implement a way to quick-choose moves on the character select screen. Though, to be completely honest, I think variations have always been a half-assed element and characters should just have one kit like they did pre-MKX. One variation invariably (haha) comes out on top and the others end up obsolete and pointless.

I mean it's a silly poll, of course everyone played custom you'd be handicapped if you didn't, if we could pick abilities from all variations in mkx we'd pick the best 3 out of the top 5 abilities as well. The presets seemed unfinished (some of them only had 2 abilities). I feel like NRS wanted to cater to all players playing their beta so they went with custom for it instead of what would be the tournament standard.

The difference is that the beta already had a system in place to prevent picking all the best moves, in that they cost varying points to use and also conflict with each other. For example, Baraka can't have big combo damage and mixups at the same time, because gutted and leg kebab conflict with each other, while gutted and blood lunge both cost 2 points to use. They should balance around this system instead, instead of going back to presets like MKX and throwing custom variations right in the garbage.

Well, I already voted in that twitter poll since I had to start being on twitter to vote in the summit thing.

Anyway, I voted both there and here that I played "customs only."

I literally never once selected a premade variation. I did as many others and tried out the moves in the tower until I found what I liked and rolled with that for the beta. (did the same for the stress test but I tried out the custom builds in versus play obviously.)

It is better this way
I did customs only, played nothing but Scorpion.

I found out pretty quickly that I'd be epically cucking myself if I didn't have misery blade equipped because of Scorpion's shitty frame data. It was actually a really fun ability, using the mixups, canceling out of it and going back into it, or canceling and going into a throw. It wasn't busted, it just gave Scorpion the ability to do something other than a) yolo tele or b) sit still and hope your opponent fucks up so you can punish with tele or whiff punish with B14 or something or C) literally nothing but footsies all game. I used demon dash as the third slot, it complimented scorpion's whiff punishing abilities and was great for catching jumps or some decent damage as an ender.

The more I think about my time with Scorpion and his "custom" variations, I feel that there really was no other way to equip him than with misery blade and demon dash. It kinda just gave the illusion of choice, because this was the best, easiest, and imo the funnest way to play Scorpion. Who would give up misery for a shitty NJP or demon dash for a shitty unsafe chain flip.

That being said, I didn't touch Jade, Kabal, Baraka, or Skarlet so I don't know if they had a loadout like Scorpion that is without question the best (and only) way to use them, or if they had several great loadouts. For Scorpion's sake, I hope his preset variations are completely different when the game drops, or they make his chain specials not suck, or give him literally one string that is safe, or add misery blade to one of his preset variations. Cause if Scorpion is expected to be used as is without access to misery blade, the guy isn't gonna have a good time at all in this game (for the Lin Kuei indeed :DOGE). Although it is just the beta, so if custom variations really are dead, hopefully they make the presets not suck so hard and at least use up all three slots lmao. That goes for everyone, not just Scorpion.

I played only with pre-made variations because I figured there is a high chance custom variations won't be allowed for competitive play.

If custom were to be a consideration for competitive play, a quick customization would need to be implemented into the character select screen, and would need to show the moves being selected there (and perhaps on the loading screen too), ideally with silhouetted animations in addition to move names so that what's being selected would be very clear.

This. I don't know about time issues in offline tournaments, but I also think it would have been possible to balance the system by these means. 3 moves for a character are so strong that they're always played together with 0 alternatives? Make one of them take 2 slots. Two particular moves are overpowered when combined? Make it so that you can just have either or, such as Jade's low projectile or ground pound.

100% agree. With custom variations, people will figure out the best combinations, and 60% of special moves will never be used.
Using a low tier variations in MKX had its charm, but equipping a bad move instead of a good one, it's not appealing at all.
