Tekken 7 General Discussion Thread - OP Updated With All Tekken Info

One new thing that I noticed is that Miguel's b4 is now an armor move. That is gonna be some cheap stuff, other characters can abuse armor moves at the wall as well but this one definitely takes the cake for having an extremely favourable risk/reward if it still has the same properties otherwise.

Had to chime in because I've been M.I.A. a few days, and I'm currently playing the greatest fighting game ever made in the history of fighting games.

Tekken 5DR.
My nephew downloaded the PSP emulator with some games including t6 and t5DR, i'm currently training pewgf in there, and improving my KBDC game there, its also a good way to pass time until t7 arrives.

Also, i have the money already, i will try to buy vouchers in monday, if they have it, then i will definitely pre-order the game this monday.

Tekken 7 is so hype...

Alright, well, for those of you who missed it, the T7 UK Championship in Dublin gave one hell of a show. I only tuned in to Top 16 pretty much, but that was plenty of action packed matches. There were definitely some guys that were new to T7, and/or the series as a whole, but there were veterans also, and great play to be seen.

@PND_Ketchup: I'm fairly certain that Hwoarang is pronounced Hwa-RANG (as in ''rang the bell''). or Whore-RANG alternatively (insert joke here). You were saying ''Hur-Wrong''. But that's a nitpick.The commentary (and the slow motion) kept things exciting. And I feel that, despite your limited knowledge of the game, you & Mustard did an excellent job.

Personally, Phantom vs. Roo Kang was a tourney highlight for me, but I can't downplay that grand finals. Also, the character diversity was great, and that's the food that pleases this particular stream monster.

Niceee! I forgot how much I miss characters like Baek, Anna, and Julia. Mannnnnnn.

It's like everything comes back instantly. Funny how many combos and move properties have changed. Good ol days with the old Bryan taunt, Asuka S2 mid launch, Baek feint cancels, no bound combos. We're having a ball over here lol.

Yes. KaneAndTrench won the first UK qualifier a week ago.

I am transitioning into a PS4 pad. The d-pad takes a lot less time to wear down and loosen up unlike with PS3 pads. Come to think of it I've had my PS4 for 2 years now and used 2 controllers and the triggers are still functioning properly which is the big issue people kept complaining about when MK X came out. One problem I've encountered when practicing electrics with the PS4 pad is that I tend to hit 1+2 instead of just 2 or hit the start button sometimes. If I can't get out of the muscle memory habit of doing this I am gonna have to jerry rig some type of attachment paste and a tooth pick on top of the start button to not press it accidentally :D

Anyone who likes to shit on the PS4 pad is... well, they have not used it enough. I seriously doubt you can get any more precise instant while running inputs on anything else. Being able to consistently iWR3 after having your 1,2 blocked is a significant advantage. Anyone who is learning the game on a stick won't be able to do this for a very long time... On the other hand they have the advantage of being able to execute circular motions in a lot more precise way.

Edit: The OG's generally like to hate on pad players and anyone using button mapping, but I've mapped 1+4 to R1, 2+3 to R2 and 3+4 to L2. This way the only face button double inputs you need to learn to hit with a traditional grip and just your thumb are 1+2, 1+3 and 2+4. For Yoshi this means that whenever you think someone is going to enforce a frame trap or is using a string you can interrupt you can just mash R1 / 1+4 to blow them up with the flash for a full combo.

So I can get t6 and the psp emulator and practice before t7 releases, and some of what i learn, like the KBD, will carry directly over? Cause thats awesome. No online play or anything, but I can at least get a feel for the game this way.

Who is AoP and why is she avoiding mids?
Art Of Phoenix refers to Ling Xiayou's d1+2 stance (if I remember that is the input). Instead of raging and breaking your controller the first time you are forced to deal with this BS character, you should instead learn what mids hit her while she is in this stance. Here is how to lab this character:

1. Set the dummy as Ling and record her going into d1+2 and mash d repeatedly to spam the AOP command crouch movement
2. Go through all of your character's mids and try to time your mid to the exact moment she ducks while in AOP.
3. All mids that don't hit her out of it are pretty much useless or at least extremely risky to use, highs should not be used at all against this character.

For Bryan, mids that hit her out of AOP-d are ws3, ws4, f4, db2 and qcb4.
B1 and df2 occasionally hit when she is in standard AOP and in the AOP-d state, but these 2 moves are still inconsistent.

If you're training movement in T6 it will carry over, you might learn many characters movesets along the way too, though in T7 they will all be updated but its a good start.

on april 30th there will be a t7FR mod which i'm planning to get, in order to get familiar with the K system and such.

@Smoke_Of_Finland hmm this is interesting because I have PS4 and was thinking of buying a hitbox or something cause I thought T7 would be impossible to play well on pad.
I do notice from playing MKX for a year is that sometimes my BF motions don't come out and have heard similar complaints from other PS4 pad users.
Is there many BF motions in Tekken?

Also I just watched the UK Final where he beat CherryMango, that was hype asf!!!! Stream crashed and everything haha

I don't think the BF input issue in MK X has anything to do with the pad. BF inputs are just harder to repeatedly mash when you are in block stun. MK X's block stun mechanic is an embarrasment really.

In the pad vs stick debate the conclusion has always been the same, it's a matter of preference. I've never even tried a stick and I am too far gone and invested too much time on pads to switch at this point. However, if you've never played Tekken you are going to get mopped for a long time anyway so trying a stick might not be a bad idea if you can get a half decent one cheap or used from a friend.

Speaking of used items, if you are into any FB marketplace or Sell/buy/trade groups anywhere or you know friends who only play FIFA or other games that require abundant use of the analog sticks, try to get your hands on pads that have had the analog sticks give out. The analogs are generally the first things to give out, but chances are the d-pads are also already a little bit loosened up, something you absolutely want for Tekken. By telling someone lies like you want to try to fix these pads out of curiousity or telling them these pads are worthless or you want to glue them to a wall under an assortment of wooden dicks because you are an artist or some BS excuse like that, you can stockpile perfectly good pads for free or at a very cheap price just in case your main pads give out. Having a d-pad that's loose is basically a requirement, otherwise you will strain your hands a lot and your movement will suck. If you tell the people you are trading with online that you only need the loose d-pad these marketplace vultures could extort half price and that's a shitty deal you don't want to take. You want to get those pads for free or for 1/4 price or less.

Obviously if you learn stick right away you won't have to resort to this type of shady haggling. Another option concerning pad longevity is to learn to play with a right hand claw grip so broken triggers won't matter... but imo if you are gonna fuck around with any new type of grip you haven't used before that is extremely counter-intuitive you might as well get a stick right away.

So, a quick question, I've always heard Tekken referred to as a very execution heavy game, is this just in reference to the movement system or are combos and such extremely difficult as well? I mean I'm sure that's a broad question and some are difficult and some are easy, but a kind of base line I guess, for my character, Bryan for example.

Going to put some more time into t6 today just feeling things out.

@EntropicByDesign: ws is "while standing". While standing moves are performed by releasing down (crouch) and then quickly pressing a button

So ws1 would be while standing left punch. Ws2 would be while standing right punch, etc.

CD is *crouch dash" iirc. Don't ask me about CDS though. Get on Eddy Wang or Smoke for that one.

CDS is jin's crouch demon stance, is done by doing B1, and he enters a particular stance since T5, and has been improving ever since, in TTT2 they gave another stance called Zenchin, which is called "Zen" now, the effects are the same as CDS, the only difference is that CDS has more crushing proprieties compared to Zen which moves him forward while cds moves him backwards.

As for execution, Mishimas are execution heavy characters, whiff punishing with eletrics can be pretty difficult to achieve in high level matches due space control and clutch, in the heat of the match its really hard to find that opening, but its super doable, this is also what makes them super dificult to learn, since not only they rely on this move a lot, wavedashes and other options out of it are extremely required to know alternate ways to access them.

Kazuya is a high execution character from the ground up: he relies mostly on his eletric to do anything, to attack, to apply pressure to create most of his frame traps, to whiff punish, to be safe, and he has one of the harders CH just frame launchers in the game.

While Jin is not as heavy as Kazuya in T7 he is going to be a bit more dificult since his regular WHF never launches, technically you will have to learn the just frame version to use it all the time.


If you haven't watch the dublin qualifiers, just check "datguyoverdur" he was playing DVJ on a d-pad and was doing fine, but in top 8 he knew he was fucked since it would require far more than what he was doing to mantain a good threat ratio using Devil Jin, since he knew he couldn't deliver, he switched to a easy character, even if Devil Jin is one of the most strongest characters in T7.

Things he knew he was't ready for:
whiff punishing with EWGF constantly (this is a must with any mishima)
EWGF off ws2 and hellsweeps up close (more damage)
side step eletrics
double eletrics combos (do more damage)
Wavedash into B4/hellsweep 50-50s (he wasn't ready)

He's listed in the guide as Medium in difficulty, with Bryan as Expert or something, lol.

Lars is consider weak this game so there isnt many to watch but you in luck "CherryBerryMango" will cover you for both Jin and Lars. Also search "LowHigh" for both as well.

If you're planning to pick Jin you will be up for a hell of a ride. The guide says Jin excels in many areas, he indeed does though it doesn't really explain everything, if you want anything more in detail i can give it to you, his design its for me one of the best in the game for the ones of my liking, so this time around different from TTT2 this Jin is something to look forward to.

Combos are generally easy. Tekken requires very little input discipline compared to NRS games, as in there are no special cancels and you can mash single hit moves and strings in most combos out no matter how laggy it is, extra inputs don't screw anything over. However, certain combos and hit confirms require good timing. Wall carry combos in general require a good amount of practice as you must be aware of how many hits you did and how close you are to the wall, The tailspin system will make combos even easier I think as there is not much reward anymore in choosing not to use the combo extender mechanic and save it for the post wallsplat part of the combo. This was the case with the bound system and characters with good wall carry could save their bound, carry to the wall and use it there for r-e-t-a-r-d-e-d damage. Now all characters get better carry with tailspin and wall damage is slightly reduced.

Bryan has some techniques that require some practice but he is listed as expert difficulty because of his taunt, which is a gimmick that you won't even need to use. Learning to use it is of no concern for a long time when picking up the game, it's not a crucial aspect of his gameplan. Jin is a lot harder to pick up and learn really. Electrics are very much required with him now given that only the electric version of his CD2 launches on normal hit.

Bryan is still looking like my go-to but I'm going to keep a little list of potentials though because until I can actually play the game and get a feel for it in motion and everything it's all academic, I just don't know who's really going to click yet.

Jin and Hwoarang are both pretty interesting from an 'I watched them played in a tournament and they looked bad ass' perspective, and the description and such of both is nice, except Hwoarang being pure rushdown. I like to play a little defensive, so we'll see.
