What I miss in Tournaments

Hey all,

no matter which tournament I am watching, I feel like in every tourny something very important for me is missing: Speeches.

E-Sports is growing and being seen as a real competetive scene in more and more countries. Every sport has speeches, so why not the E-Sport tournaments?

ESL is doing a better job to let people speak up their mind, but I think they should consider give the eliminated players also a chance to talk to their crowd. The Fan choice of MKX for example. Perfect Legend and Justin Wong both had no chance to thank the people live who voted them there.

It's like always the same, the finals are being played, sometimes there is a trophy and the stream ends. At least let the champion tell us something about his journy, allow him to express some emotions!

Is it just me or are you missing the same?

Peace!

What exactly makes you cringe?

I feel odd pretty much no player shows emotions after winning.
I watch a lot of e-sports, and usually the interviewer is very stiff and often the players are anti-social/shy, and perhaps don't have their way with words as easily as in "real sports" and it just makes me cringe to see such a stiff and awkward interview. Of course there are exceptions and some personalities may very well be entertaining to listen to, but I just made it a habbit to close the stream.

It makes me cringe the same way this does:

The link above is funny though, usually it's just awkward and yes - I'm probably only speaking for myself.

1. I have no emotion
2. I've won so much, such emotion wouldnt be present anyway.

The reason you say this, is because your first event was ESL, don't confuse ESL for the norm at all. It's in fact very unique in that respect.

I dunno though, I guess it depends on the players, I know some1 like REO might not have so much to say compared to PL

Here's how F0xy would react to any post game tournament match.

"How do you think you could do better next time?" F0xy: "Don't get hit"
"Is there anything you'd like to say?" F0xy: "You're all shit" *Insert cheeky*

I mean, if what they had to say was either actually funny or engaging, heartfelt, and thoughtful, people wouldn't just tune it out. They could actually inspire other players and attract new viewers. But usually, its just get the checks and bounce, no thanks no nothing. They key thing here is emotion, because if you don't seem invested in this game (a.k.a get the money and run), then the fans will not be invested in you, and this goes for all sports, not just e-sports. I want to see my players act like they have a heart when they win.

Speeches are like number 1 on my list of things I'm glad fighting game tournaments don't do. They're completely unnecessary in every situation. If they HAD to happen, then just let the winner of the tournament say a few words.

Interviews are better and plenty of people already do interviews at tournaments. Speeches to the crowd are unneeded. Special cases could me made I guess for things like you mentioned (PL and Wong being able to play because of fans) but speeches at regular tournaments? No thanks.

It was actually done during the MK Cup finals in Paris. I personally thought it was quite awkward to talk about my match and what I expected from my other opponents, but did just fine. However, there were also players who were even more uncomfortable and it definitely showed. I think it's just awkward and unnecessary in most cases.

They could get on the stream mic the players for 3-4 words after they've played their match.

I think you meant Babalities, OP. Babalities are what is missed from tournaments, not awkward post-tourney speeches.
I don't get this attitude.

What's wrong with congratulating the opponent for winning/great efford, saying you are happy, thanking everyone for the support/sponsors.

It's not that hard and would be a sign of good sportsmanship.

For me it's a most importent thing to thanks your opponent for play and wish him goodluck. If you can't do this then fuc....off.

I personally can't stand the awkward interviews between matches and I never even watch the award ceremony. I know who won, don't need to see them dance around with a trophy and make up shit to say in a post tournament interview. Plus, I usually saw something that I want to go practice right away or whatever.

If the player wants to then he should have that right. At EVO this year KBR wanted to give a speech after his win in UMvC3 and they refused to give him the mic. we all wanted to hear it. It was definitely a buzz kill

During Injustice, I remember they often had the winner of the major go sit down with the commentators and have a few words and I always enjoyed that/hoped that one day that could be me. From what I can remember, that kinda stopped at Final Round 2014 when SonicFox won his first Injustice major and instead of talking to the stream, we got to hear Tom Brady shit talk WoundCowboy. I think the trade off was fair ;)

But in all honesty, I kinda wish they would do those post winner interviews on stream again.

We definitely need more super cringey shit-talk segments between the players like they did at ESL finals.

Good god, that was fucking awful. No fault to the players, I'm sure they were made to say all that stuff.

If that made you cringe, then that's on you. You have no idea how much we enjoyed that. And it was natural.

Hey man....I enjoy cringe like no other. I totally agree.

"Pig, if I had a dollar for every time it took you to get out of pools for an NRS game......*turns to camera* I'D HAVE ZERO"

Jeeeeeesus Christ, it makes my skin crawl. Haha.

Doesn't have to be in front of the whole audience at the event, but the winner sitting down with the stream commentators to recap the match and discuss their thoughts generally would be great from a viewer's perspective.

It could also be an opportunity for the winner to talk shit about someone that perhaps wasn't at that tournament but who they hope to body at some point in the future. Kind of like when a winner of a UFC fight calls out the current beltholder after the win and says "I'm coming for the belt biatch!"
