Let's deeply think about this... Mortal Kombat went to Evo this year and had over 500 entrants making it the biggest Mortal Kombat tournament in MK history. Now, to describe just how far we've come since even the release of Mortal Kombat 9... we are now making great friends with each other. Whether it be the Quan Chi player from Greece of the infamous Sektor and Cyrax players from the UK... we have come together in not just signing up but staying active and doing everything we can to keep our communities blood pumping.

Next year, there are many new fighting games coming out that stand good chance (I assume) of being shoe-ins for Evo 2012... so again, will Mortal Kombat 9 then being over a year old stand a chance and if so, 'how good of a chance' to be welcomed back to the greatest fighting game tournament in the world? I have heard people say "MK seems dead in this area" or "MK is dead here"... and that is something we have to continue to work to stop the leaks... it's like a sinking ship; we have to plug the holes together to keep it afloat.

Positives: Let's say Mortal Kombat 9 is selected once again to be an Evo fighter, then what? Well, it's not just then what... let's think of our international players... just think of the hype we have all built so far and what we could do with it?

Regardless, before I start rambling... what are your thoughts on this - Would you go to Evo 2012 for Mortal Kombat 9?

also PDP 2 months earlier took away 250 entries that some chose to go to it rather than Evo.

This Past evo was Hype and I already see more and more people who didnt go claim they will go next year if it it's back.

This needs to happen, im counting on it

I would go if I had the funds.

I may be getting a job in the near future and should be able to accumulate enough to head out lol. It would be amazing to, to be honest. Would love it. 2011 was such a good year for MK as a series and it's brought it back to life as a whole..

Overall it can't be denied that this new game is very balanced..especially after the recent patch. Anyone can win for sure now, and the gap between top tier and bottom tier has been shortened. This makes it a lot more entertaining to watch, as opposed to the same 3 or 4 characters with the same tech over and over..it becomes very hype in tournaments and like in that intro video people get so excited the event.

I would definitely go if I could.

God I hope MK is at EVO 2012. Never been to any FG tourney, or Vegas. If MK is there, I will go all out and make it an amazing weekend. Maybe we should start a petition or something. IMO MK stole the show, those finals were hype as fuck!

I'm international, currently livin in Peru, South America.
tbh, my main goal right now is to level up the fights here in Lima and build a somewhat strong scene. MK franchise left a good feeling for many casual and some competitive players in the 90s, so MK9 has been a hit here.
However, due to economic and educational politics in this third world country, people who played casual now and CAN play now somewhat competitively, prefer to play tekken,mvc3 or sf4 because there's more people who play those games who may help them in spanish. Those who speak english and played competitive in prior years, have MK only as an alt. game.
My job here is to translate the basics, help people, promote videos, promote guides, promote this site, etc. I'm currently working on 2 docs, one of them introducing people to fighting games, another one with a brief description of every character strategy, bnb and resource info. However, with the latest patch I've had to delay that last doc. In the meantime, I wrote a glosary for MK for spanish speakers.

I'm going to Germany to follow up my carreer there in February, so thinking about EVO 2k12 for somebody like me can only be through dreams. I know from first hand experience, however, that most competitive players here(from any fighting games) were hype on MK makin a big appearence on this year's EVO. Only thing I can do is help grow the scene and keep people informed and hype about MK tourneys, which is pretty much what I've been doing since I found people to play with (and growing). It'd be awesome to have MK for 2k12's EVO, and I'm sure it'll do as good as this year, or better. Can't see it failing.
Maybe some day I'll be able to go and play with ya'll. Congratz on the community and site management, btw.

If Mortal Kombat 2011 doesn't make it to the next EVO, I swear I will slit my wrists. When you look back at all the hype we've experienced this year, how can you deny us that unstoppable energy?

I'm there. End of story.

It depends on how many games will be featured at EVO. If it only does 6 then MK is going to have to compete with KoFXIII, Soul Calibur V, Skull Girls, TTT2 (if their is a console release), SFxT, BBCS: Extend, UMVC3 and AE2012.

Look at it like this, Zeppeli. MK would almost surely get more participants than BB, Skullgirls, and KoF13 (I know it'll be a good game, but there is no sign it will spark a big scene). TTT2, even if it does see a console release by Evo, probably wouldn't hit consoles until soon before Evo, so there wouldn't be enough time. AE2012, SFxT, and UMvC3 are the only sure ones in. I'd say SC5 has the next best chance, and after that MK. In my opinion, MK still fits into the 5.

Check my latest post in the Arizona vs. VSM thread...I talk about this a bit there. I've wanted to post about this for awhile now so this is perfect!

So based on the upcoming release schedule, the way Evo tends to pick games, etc., I think at this point there are four games that look like stone cold locks for Evo next year:

SSF4AE 2012: Shouldn't need any explanation.

UMvC3: See above.

Street Fighter x Tekken: It's going to be the "hot new thing" from Capcom at this time, and Evo has always been a Capcom-focused tournament. If Tatsunoko vs. Capcom could get into Evo, this should be a no-brainer.

Soul Calibur V: Evo needs a Namco game - they've always had at least one since 2003, T6 is dead, TTT2 won't be out on console in time, and the SC series has a pretty decent history with Evo. FWIW, Namco is also one of the biggest sponsors at Evo, although I can't say exactly how much that factors into game choices if at all.

Now, I highly doubt Evo's going to only have 4 games next year, so let's look at the other feasible candidates:

Mortal Kombat 9: Highest Evo turnout of any game ever besides SF4 & MvC3, fantastic top 8, biggest mainstream presence of any FG besides SF4, yadda yadda yadda. Seems to have less of a consistent tourney presence on the west coast and in Canada than elsewhere. Like STORMS mentioned, there are a lot of strong international players emerging, so there is plenty of potential for improvement over this year's tournament if it gets back in. However, there is a perception among the wider FGC that MK is dying, and the lack of a 100+ player tournament since Evo only fuels that.

Blazblue CS: Extend: Blazblue this year had its best possible situation - the newest version had come out on console fairly recently, and it was a clear improvement over the previous games. And even with all of that, it still had less than half the turnout of MK. Its numbers were about the same as Tekken 6's, and it didn't have the excuse of being an old dead game like T6 did. BB also consistently draws lower turnouts than MK at other majors and regionals, and certainly much less stream hype (though Evo top 8 was really good). Add all of this to a new version that will be unproven compared to MK9, and I think it's a weaker candidate by just about any standard.

Skullgirls: I think this is the big wild card. No built-in fanbase (besides Mike Z's fans on Dustloop, lol), but it's generated some good buzz and received a ton of coverage on the SRK and TYM front pages. Its visual style seems to turn off a lot of people, and I could see that hurting sales and perception. Being cheaper than the other relevant FGs should help, though. GGPO is by far the best netcode there is, so it should draw a lot of attention from serious players on that alone...but many casual players don't understand GGPO's benefits and get confused by the rollbacks. It also won't be out until next year, but that could be a positive as far as hype goes. And its creator is a player with major roots in the community and friends among some of the higher-ups in the scene.

At worst this game should be big among the anime crowd, so I think the Blazblue numbers from last year represent its floor. As for its ceiling, who knows - Capcom players frustrated with their games could get drawn into it by GGPO and end up enjoying it, and in particular I could see some MvC2 & Guilty Gear specialists getting into this since it plays more like those games than MvC3 and Blazblue do. Alternately, everybody outside of animeworld could not give a shit and continue bitching about Capcom games while playing them anyway. It's really hard to say, but this game shouldn't be a total flop at least. And given that Evo likes to feature fresh & new games and has been willing to take chances on much riskier stuff in the past (e.g. DOA4, Mario Kart DS, hell even MK9!), I would say this looks like MK's stiffest competition.

The King of Fighters XIII: This looks like the least likely of the new games. SNK has just never had much of a scene in the US - even MK in the dark days was probably bigger. It's also highly likely that people will be scared off by how awful KOF12 was. If it uses GGPO, then I could maybe see it picking up a following here, but I recall hearing that isn't happening. It's a shame, since I think this is perhaps the best of the current crop of FGs, but it's hard for me to imagine how it would draw even 200 players at Evo. In short, KOF will probably continue to be the soccer of FGs.

So, to boil it all down, I think MK will be safe if Evo decides to go back to 6 games next year. If they stay at 5, I think it will still be a front-runner but far from guaranteed. As I mentioned in my other post, we really need to finish this year strong at majors if we want to make a good case. Evo tends to decide on the game lineup pretty early in the year, so we need to rep well at Devastation/Season's Beatings/NEC to prove that we still belong. Even Winter Brawl and Final Round may be too late, though I don't remember exactly when they decide on the games.

Digimon actually said he's almost 100% sure KoF13 will be at Evo 2012. I still don't know why this is.

I love Webster, we go back quite a bit, but he says a lot of things. SNK scene has never had any clout in the US, and the company hasn't been nearly as adept in dealing with tournament organizers as Capcom/Namco/Aksys/NRS. I don't see it.

Because KoF and SNK games have a strong enough following and have in years, minus KoF 12, turned out decent quality fighters. Its about time KoF came back and kicked ass. I cant wait to play KoF13.

@Josh the funkdoc - speaketh the truth brother man! dropping knowledge.

I think Evo 2012 will add another day and will have at least 6 or 7 games:

SSF4 AE 2012
UMvC3
MK9
SFxT
SC5
KoF13
Skullgirls

CY MasterHavik

Master of Chaos and Jax
My prediction....

SF4 Apology Edition 2012( they really call it that.)
UMvC3( curse you Phoenix wright, Human Morrigan, and 80s Storm!)
Sc5( I will be all over this game. Huge Sc fan, and I don't see why the EVO staff will turn this away.)
MK9( Will explain later)
SFXT( OMG Ryu fighting Jin. Thiz game iz so awesum! I prefer Lili fighting Cammy or Sakura to be honest.)

In the hunt....

Skullgirls( It answers all the things every fighting game players wants. And it also plays to the anime crowd too. BTW, I like anime so you know I'm hype for this game.)
KOF 13
Bloody Roar 5( You never know. It might be serious.)
KI3( Who knows really.)
BBCSX( As a fellow BB player, I would like to say Arc system works fuck themselves over. It will be coming out for DLC for 360 and PS3. So, if we want out BB so badly. It will have to be enjoyed off the Vita.)

Tim, it's not that I don't think KoF13 will be a good game. It's a matter of how popular it will be.

I will say, regardless of what happens I'm already more excited for next year's Evo than I was for this year's. I'm not a fan of modern Capcom or a big 3D guy, but I really like MK9/KOF13 and Skullgirls interests me the most of any recent game. It already looks like I'll be guaranteed to have 1 or maybe even 2 games I care about, and that's all I need.

Wow...what assholes. Well, what do you think about my list overall along with my funny comments?
those first 5 you have + Skullgirls & KoF13 is what i think as well, but BR5 and KI3 will never happen and if they did, i really doubt they would be Evo worthy. BB? who knows.

If for some awful reason MK9 is NOT at EVO I propose we make our own MK event that same weekend in Vegas. Since a lot of FG players will be there anyway. Maybe even pool enough money and rent a venue or hell just a hotel room or two. I'd be willing to help organize and chip in what money I can. MK9 WILL NOT DIE!
