What's new

Very New and Very Confused

As the title states...
I am super new, not to MK, but to the competitive side of it. I have played shooters competitively and usually would play MK and other fighters with friends casually. However, shooters aren't as exciting as they once were and would like to start transitioning into MK. That being said there is one problem...I'm a Noob...

I don't know the lingo, I have a very vague idea of the button translations and abbreviations and that makes reading the helpful tips posted here rather hard to decipher.

My question is simply

Is there a forum for new people? or possibly someone post a link to something that could make me go from noob to...more educated noob?

All help is appreciated.

First off- welcome to the community And best of luck with tackling the game. Fighters are not an easy genre to adjust to, it will not be easy.

For starters I would recommend picking a character that appeals to you. Then go to that Character's specific forum here on TYM to look for general advice and combos for the characters

You NEED to learn combo notation. When you see players posting combos on this website you'll notice that they use the following notation:

1= X button on xbox (square for PS)
2= Y button on xbox (Triangle for PS)
3= A button on xbox (X button on PS)
4= B button on xbox (Circle button on PS)

So, on the xbox, 111 df1 translates to "press X three times quickly, then press down, forward, X"

After learning this simple notation you can learn combos by visiting the combo threads on this website and copying the combos that other players have posted. Some of these combos will be very difficult, but very rewarding once mastered.

Other than that there is alot of stuff for you to learn- spacing, what your character's best attacks are, special moves, how to cancel a combo string into a special move, ect. ect. You can master all of this in the game's training room.

Above all just have fun. Good luck, and let me know if you have any specific questions.

Check this thread. I'm in the same situation as you, casual fan who wants to learn more, and thought this was a very good intro.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. Other than that, check out Pig of the Hut's armory every couple weeks, watch lots of tournament footage, and read threads like crazy.

People are usually pretty willung to explain things here, so don't worry about coming off like a noob. Welcome to the family :)

Going to character specific forums is very important, as some have already suggested. But if it seems too overwhelming I suggest you search youtube for fighting game tips or tutorials. Developing your FG basics is the most important thing right now since you are new to the genre. You can also watch FG pros in tournaments. My point is study the basics before you dive into specifics. It's a bit less fun this way but it'll save you time in the end. Once you get bad habits into your muscle memory they can be hard to unlearn.

Oh and welcome to Mortal Kombat and TYM. :D

Read, Study, Practice, and watch the pro players play. You can soak up alot of information on fundamentals and footsies which is vastly more important than high % combos. That's where I feel most new players make their biggest mistake and get turned off from a fighter such as MK. They constantly go for JiP or just running in and doing their new found combo in practice mode, and neglect all other aspects of the game. So don't make that mistake! Hope this helps. Welcome to the community.

Yep, that's exactly what I do. I figure out an awesome new combo, practice it, then never find an opening to use it during a real fight. Instead, I win by smaller chunks of damage by ducking in and out where I can find opportunities.
