What is chip damage?

I keep coming accross the term in forums .

Damage dealt to someone who is blocking. Generally referenced when the amount is significant. The damage is much less then on hit but it still deals some and some abilities deal a fair bit even when they block.

It's the damage you take when blocking an opponent's attack. You don't take full damage because you're blocking, but you still take a bit. Chip damage.
