Testers and Early Tournaments

This was a huge topic of discussion in Injustice and it's time for this to be handled. This past weekend I was apart of two tournaments in the Dallas area that each had pot bonuses of $150 and $200 each. I was going under the impression that I could do well and possibly get some money, but as soon as I walked in, I realize I had no chance. I saw Tom and Reo playing.

Let me preface this and say that I like both of them. Tom even bought me a beer this weekend. The problem I have is that they entered and won (little surprise) these tournaments and made tons of money. I traveled 3 hours to go to these and if they weren't there, I would've placed top 2 at both of them. I'm not one to make excuses, if you ask anyone I talk to I take my tournament losses hard and look to improve from them. But the fact of the matter is that when I lost to both Tom and Reo, I don't feel like I was specifically outplayed. I acknowledge that their tournament resume's far surpass mine and that they will probably be better players than me in the end, but I felt like I simply got beat by an unfair advantage. KH Cat and Starcharger may have felt similar; they traveled from Houston to come to these tournaments just to be in the same situation as me. Cat could've probably won one or both.

From my understanding they were both there for a sponsorship deal with Versus Gameplay ... which is great. Good for them. But having two guys that come in that talked about playing the games for months body everyone without breaking a sweat isn't a good showing for the game. Using your timed advantage to win pot bonuses doesn't seem cool to me. They won somewhere in the neighborhood of $700 combined, which is a substantial amount of money to be had. From my understanding, there are other people that entered week 1 tournaments as well, such as Dizzy at GGA on Thursday. But the reason I don't think this is as big of a deal because the tournament is free to enter. There were also a ton of testers (Chris G, Art) that entered the ESL Preseason Cup, but this was free and online so there wasn't much of a sacrifice. It's also my understanding that some testers are traveling to Northwest Majors this weekend ... is this ok?

In my opinion, I think a month is fine, but first week seems unfair. If I lose to Tom and Reo at Combo Breaker, I'll hold my loss and move on. So I ask this of you, the community. When this much money is on the line this early, would you like it if someone who claims they've been playing for months came and won it all? Was this ok and am I wrong in complaining and bringing this up? Or should this be regulated in some way?

Honestly at first i was against it but from the 3 hours I've played it its so easy and really close to mk9. If any long term tester loses just laugh in their face and move on lol. There's no way they should lose for the first month or so,if they do then they shouldn't have even tested to begin with that shows their skill at fg.

it couldn't possibly be that bill / reo were the 2 best players there?? maybe that could also have had something to do with them getting opportunity to help test game? some ppl have been playing for 20 hours a day for over a week now.

Dudes came to Texas for some sponsoring and decided to cash out the pot bonus from all the feeble 5 day playing peasants in the process lol.

I think it's kind of messed up to be honest. If they were there promoting the game or whatever that's great, but no need for guys who have been playing for months to actually enter a paid tourney and take money from guys playing for 5 days. Let those guys have a chance to place people on their speed and win or lose.

If this was May or June, yea fine, but 5 days after release is basically just free money for their pockets for showing up, and had I been the guy in 3rd or 4th place behind those two I'd have been hella salty to say the least.

The testers didn't play for months lmao and how do you know for sure any of you would've won the tourny if they never tested or even got top 2?

Also I feel like if you would've won either tourny then you would've never made this thread.

The salt is strong in the creation of this thread. I don't think $700 is that much when you got to pay bills etc.

Honestly almost everybody in SoCal is like at my level already, I just know a lot more characters than them. When I was there I tried to really cover a lot of characters and all of their tools, it wasn't like I was just playing with one character nonstop the whole time, 90% of my time was training mode (like it is at home :tonyt) I do definitely have a matchup knowledge advantage though.

I do think that the system of this game is similar enough to what we've already seen that it seems like everybody has gotten used to it around here already.

Tom told me at Fatal 8 that he's had the game for like 2 months after testing though, so that might be a different case for him.

Because I got 4th and 3rd? Which by math if they aren't there then I'm top 2. Yeah it seems salty, but get out of here dude.

And Tom told me he's been playing for 2 months. I'm not spouting stuff out of my ass.

Tom is a unique case, I legit have no idea how he manages to always get the game for months before release, but that wasn't a tester thing, it was a Tom thing.

I'm a tester and i feel most people are better than me already. Granted i don't have the game, but i sure as hell know the insides and outs of the game. IF you lost to them then you definitely got outplayed, saying otherwise is an insult to anyone who beat you.

You realize that they tested the game longer than I have OWNED the game right? I literally lost to two matches I've never played before. It's been days.

Then what about your Houston buddies that had the game like a week before it came out? They should be banned to right?

On one hand it's kind of cool to see Tom and Reo play and learn how the game is played at a high level. On the other hand I lived 10 mins away from the venue and had no real chance of winning it anyway. The only thing that might weaken your argument is that Cat managed to send REO to losers, but I think its a valid argument nonetheless.

What's a Smarrgasm?
You guys do realize that during these two tournaments the game had been out for 3-4 days. Thats barely enough time to get simple combos down let alone a regular gameplan. I get that tester advantage may not be that much if you only test the game for a week but Tom has been openly saying hes been playing for months.

They basically came in and fought everyone knowing that 99% of the players had never played against almost the whole cast and that none of them had played this game in a serious setting yet. How can you just shrug off that they came in and won 2 separate tournaments each with POT BONUSES?

This will be a thread for people to make excuses whine complain about testers and it is pretty funny.
I don't think anyone cares about the 2 week testers bro. .. the long term testers are the ones ppl seem to be complaining about.

He's literally playing characters at the tournament he's never played before because he's only had the game for 3 days. Also you were there for the testing week and Tom (at least claims he did) had the game for 2 months, which is different especially in that case. Tom and Reo could surely outplay him, but there is no doubt there is an unfair advantage. IMO they should've just gone to commentate and/or do exhibitions if they want to show off good play.

Also you're saying you know the ins and outs of the game without owning it from your experience there, but this was literally less time than you had to play it. People don't know this stuff yet. People should have the same opportunity to learn the game as the others before they're playing together for hundreds of dollars.

For the record, there's no question that we do get an advantage, however I don't feel like it's large enough to consider banning us or anything. Within a few weeks it will have all evened out.

You can't control people having the game early. For all I know everyone had the game early. I personally didn't, but that's just something you can't control because what if they didn't tell anyone?

A few weeks is fine. I'm just saying week 1-2 tournaments with pot bonuses. It seems like if you aren't a tester, you really have no chance.
