Today, Joshua Gray, Creative Producer at ESL graced TYM with the ability to ask any questions regarding their new League. In the process we've learned that Netherealm have some plans of their own, but instead for grassroot tournaments such as EVO, CEO, and SoCal Regionals!

Why isn't South America included in the tournaments? Is it because of the bad internet connection?
Joshua Gray:

"My heart goes out to South America. NetherRealm and ESL know how much they have supported Mortal Kombat and Injustice in the past. NetherRealm have their own plans regarding grassroots tournaments around the world :)

The ping between SA and NA would not be a fun experience for players, which is why we limited NA to Canada, USA, and Mexico.

I hope to see an online region for South America in the future, but that decision will be made dependent upon the success of Season 1 and other factors."

Just what exactly could this mean for tournaments like CEO, Final Round, ECT, EVO, and all the grassroot tournaments around the world? Are we looking at an NRS version of a Capcom Cup?

Sounds good, and I don't know what exactly are grassroot tournaments. Can you explain that to me?

Basically almost every single fighting game tournament you've ever seen on stream.

The term grassroots tournament means that the community itself made the tournament, not the developers, not a huge sponsor, just the community (even though they may get sponsorship to help out).

Grassroot tournaments include: (these are examples, I'm not saying these are the one's they are talking about. there's much more than just these)

EVO
Final Round
NCR (NorCal Regionals)
ECT (East Coast Throwdown)
Winter Brawl
SCR (SoCal Regionals)
Hypespotting
North West Major
Texas Showdown
Dreamhack
Southeast Asia Major
Vs Fighting
Brasil Game Show
Canada Cup

The capcom cup is really driving the SF4 scene. It was already the biggest scene out there, but capcoms support is bringing more players, more money, and more hype.

A NRS equivalent would be elder Godlike.

I'd hope there'd be some form of offline grassroots support from NRS too, not just online. Not even putting up cash, the community will organise itself, but just being able to slap an 'Offical' on a tournament could do wonders for worldwide local scenes

I'm pretty sure they're talking about offline tournaments.

Did anybody ask him about PS4?
Yes, and he gave a very detailed answer:

"Regarding platform choice,

In order to unify our ONLINE players and audience for the first season of a brand new league it was decided we would choose one console platform for NA/EU.

ESL, Warner Bros., and NetherRealm spent a great deal of time researching and deliberating what would be best for an ONLINE league, culminating in a live finals. After months of meetings it was decided to go with the Xbox One for NA/EU for a variety of reasons, including:
The track record of support from Xbox for competitive leagues.
The robust performance of Xbox Live.
The ESL App on the Xbox One.

Was it an easy decision to make? No. The casualty of the console war is a split audience and player base. We knew that any selection we made wouldn't please everyone.

Do I feel we made the best choice for an ONLINE league. Yes.

In regards to questions about 'Will we have PS4 and PC (outside of CIS/Russia) as options in the future?' Let's make it through Season 1 first.

The Sub-Zero Blue Steel Skin will be available across all platforms. Those purchases support the entire Mortal Kombat X Competitive Scene, no matter the platform ;)"

maybe this is worth a separate thread?
as many people where asking, but props to him for atleast answering unlike NRS who leave us out in the cold with no answers on this, region lock or in network in general

I'm willing to bet it's just NRS giving pot bonuses to certain grass roots tournaments like EVO and such. It wont last long and they've done this with the past two games. If there was a NRS cup I think they would of announced it by now.

I'm really interested in how this will play out because I remember when MLG got involved with the FGC. Mainly with vanilla SF4 and MK9, but you didn't really see the MLG sponsors after awhile. Don't get me wrong about the leagues because they bring attention to the FGC and I stand corrected if I'm wrong, but it seemed like the grassroot tournaments keep the communities alive and well. These leagues only stay around while the game is "hot", but you don't really hear anything about them after the first year and a half. maybe it could be different this time around, but leagues in the past weren't dedicated with the communities, they just move on to the next popular game.
