Honestly games these days rarely meet my standards, there are few that really create that spark for me. what games does tym consider to be games that will stand the test of time?I prefer to play an older game with originality, and I am actually going back and playing some i missed. I can live with flaws on older games because I understand the time and I can appreciate the game.

Games that when you play them you get warm and fuzzy feelings and you go "omg this game is amazing, the people who made this are geniuses". Games where the art style really moves you and the design wows you. I never considered games like halo or cod to be in this category despite popularity. I also adore and was super comp. in pc shooters so they feel like crap to me. I respect halo more than cod however.

Battletoads. This game is retarded but also overlooked because of how hard it was. Considering this was on the nes it's way ahead of its time. Watch a speed run and you'll see

Donkey kong1/2: this was the more accessible than btoads(also made by for the next gen, still no slouch in terms of difficulty. Crazy ideas in level design. Really fluid controls.

Mario 64: this game visually, design, gameplay, was revolutionary.. It's still fun to play. I loved this game. Mario Galaxy also deserves to be in this category and I hear banjo kazooie is even better, but for me 64 is godlike and nostalgic.

Ocarina of time;obvious, it's notable the music is something that makes this extra special. I mean kids were buying ocarinas because of this.nit was also revolutionary in 3rd person action

Windwaker:this game wows me visually and environmentally. The characters are all unique and they get you emotionally involved. The moment where link runs into jabun or when hyrule surfaces gives me chills. The pacing is amazing and it feels extremely fresh through the majority of it? Really good games don't get repetitive.

Ff7:I watched my brother play this through, yup.

Bioshock: 1 is by far the best. The story and atmosphere and audio logs are on another level. This game has very interesting social commentary and also deep gameplay with tons of diff. ammunition and plasmids. Bio shock 2 has the best gameplay but it can't compete story wise with 1, whereas infinite is very cool and unique and visually amazing andthe skyline is awesome... But it's not as good gameplay wise (still great) or story wise.

Dark souls/demon souls: demons souls us worthy of mention because it we very original and has many things in common like an amazing atmosphere and rewarding difficulty, but the successor dark souls is the one I have played and could go on and on about how good it is. The intertwined level design is masterful, every area is unique and you get a tremendous sense of exploration, the method of storytelling and user generated lore it provides, the twisted sense of humor and the memorable npcs. The gameplay and the way you can build your character and all the weapons, the sense of fear and being when you are new, and most importantly the implementation of online, name the user generated messages provides for amazing situations but also adds to the humor of the game. The game really makes you feel a wide spectrum of emotions, pretty much all of them. Its an amazing experience... I could keep going and snout how dark souls 2 failed to do almost everything the first does.

Dark Souls hands down. The storytelling in that game is fucking amazing. Not sure if any single game has impacted me as much as Dark Souls.
Everything is so creative... They really innovated so many things but it's important to not how much is taken/imspired by demons. from demon's souls and how good that game isIts also cool because literally other players can misguide you to jump of the edge...

Dark Souls for sure. Dark Souls 2 was a lot of fun but it was just so different from 1, not to mention easier.

MegaManX is a true classic. Game has aged well and I not only play it, I watch people like Caleb Hart speed run it weekly. The game is just amazing.

Jade Cocoon 2. It's where I get the picture in my avatar, from a character "Levant" in the game. It's one of those rare gem games that you've rarely heard of. The game I wanted back in the day at Blockbuster wasn't in, so I saw that and tried it. Game is amazing, and I still play it from time to time.

UMK3 has aged well too. I don't play it anymore, outside of TE occasionally, but the game was ahead of its time. MKT is right there with it too. Would be lovely if MKT was released for online play along with MKX, kinda like they did with MKA and UMK3.

Of course the Mario games will always be fun. Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World are my favs.

Gameplay and theme wise I definitely see the connection, but the story in Demon Souls really didn't do it at all for me, and the story and immersion was the best part of Dark Souls to me.

Oh man, I feel they both do it well like in the swamp when you realize the maiden is just trying to help the misfortunate people. obv. Dark is my fav too, the level design is too good.

I'm going to search the top two. Dks2 I have so many gripes with, level design, art direction, stake graphics, uninspired boss fights, the director switch really showed. Matt lees voices it well. It seems rushed and misguided and uncohesive and not unique.

I have a feeling Bloodborne is going to blow them all out of the water. Hoping so at least, just need to get my PS4!

alright, having spent an unhealthy amount of time on the souls series, I don't think any game has given me that holy-shit-this-is-amazing feeling like demons souls did. dark souls was definitely really good (I filled up every single character creation slot on my main account over a 2 year period) but demons souls holds all the nostalgia for me.
secondly, I will argue this to the end of my days, but FF12 was one of the best open world RPGs ever made. for those that took the time to do all the missable content, you know whats up. right up there with ocarina of time and demons souls IMO

Kung Fu Treachery
The Souls series. The first Dark Souls in particular. I am pleased to see that sentiment shared quite a bit in this thread. Definitely one of my favorite games of last generation.

The Mass Effect trilogy. Say what you want about how it ended, but I won't let the god awful last 20 minutes ruin my 100+ hour epic journey across the series.

The Last of Us. This one is a testament to how strong story telling is in video games these days. A friend of mine just watched me play through the game. Didn't want to play, just enjoyed it like a movie. I've heard similar stories from my other friends.

TellTale's The Walking Dead (season 1 in particular) is also in the story-telling category. The same friend watched me play through both Season 1 and 2 after I did it once myself. I cried like a baby almost throughout the entire last episode of season 1 and all through the credits.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. This one is a personal favorite and is my favorite game of all time. It was the first RPG I really delved into and I completely lost myself in it. The world was so alien and interesting. I still go back and play it from time to time. This one hits me hard in the nostalgia zone. Though, I recognize it has many flaws.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. A very unique control scheme with an emotionally impactful story told without the use of words. An absolute must-play for any gamer.

Imo Pokemon is easily up there. That shit changed the RPG genre in a big way, and it's prolly my favorite game series. However, out of new stuff Bayonetta 2 is probably the best action game I have ever played on some hundred shit. (I could still be caught up in the hype, but I do love it. If not that then Arkham games for sure)

I may be in the minority, but I actually liked Majoras Mask more than OoT.

When I was younger it was definitely OoT > Majoras Mask, however as an adult I really like the dark themes in Majoras mask and the wonderfully creepy nature of the game. It is by far the most atmospheric Zelda.

Super Metroid is there as well. I still remember the first time I ever beat the game. Truly epic.

GTA Vice City - Imo the aboslute pinnacle of the series. The hype delivered. Fantastic Sound Track, likeable characters...it had everything. (LAST DANCE VANCE)

Super Mario World - Nuff Said

***Small foot note-

I absolutely hated Super Mario 64. I mean, I loved the first few levels...but I never feel like I played it the right way. I always got bogged down by the plethora of stars and never completed it. The first time you face bowser tho....it's pretty epic.

Silent Hill 2: Great theme throughout, wonderful pacing, great lore. The best survival horror game ever.
I always thought the first amnesia has been the only good horror game since SH2, it gets a bad rep from all the shitty let's plays, but good horror games are hard to come by so I take them where I can get them.

I don't know how I forgot this until now but Shadow of the Colossus is definitely on my list of all-time great games.

JTB123

>>R2 - BF4 = Unblockable.
Ninja Gaiden 2004 and the follow up Ninja Gaiden Black. Still the only game to successfully blend the depth and precision of a fighting game with the settings and style of an action adventure. Nothing even comes close to it IMO.

Replaying the REmake has also made me remember just how fucking amazing that game is. They just don't do survival horror like this any more.
