Looking for help: versitle or adaptable fighters

Basically I have spent the last couple weeks playing everyone, watching videos, reading boards, and looking at general play styles, but I am not sure what toon best fits my ideal play style. I like Jax, Sub, CSZ, Smoke, a few others, but I am looking for those characters that are able to adapt and play many facets of a game. I know that sounds almost OP, but I like a character I can rush some or zone a little. This being a solid very balanced game, compared to capcom's fighters, anyone have any suggestions as to a good place to focus my attention. I also do understand adaptable play is in large part the player.

One note I would mostly play online against others; I live in Southern MS, Hattiesburg area, so I doubt I would see much tourny action without travel. Most of my friends play MMOs, waiting on TOR mainly, so I would rarely see any offline fighting, sadly .

Most versatile characters are imo Reptile, Kabal, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao. They can zone pretty well and have good rushdown.

Liu Kang has a solid rushdown, and can zone with low and IAFB.
Kabal has F32 ND pressure, IAFB, Buzzsaw.
Kitana can zone with IAF, high damage nbreakerable combos.

thanks for the input guys; will definately focus my energies a bit more in those toons and find one i like for main.

Also I did not mention it, but do these characters have decent defensive options?

Play who you have the most fun using. I get bored playing anybody other than Sub-Zero after a while because I can't bait people with any other character like I can with Sub. If you like Sub, too, I would suggest giving him a try. He requires a lot of work because you just won't play different matchups in the same way with him. He is very subtle and adaptable in that way.

Smoke is very much a hit and run character. He's really good because you can zone and rushdown with him.

Don't pick up Kung Lao or Kabal just because they have tools for everything.

Thanks for the input; I have been trying to get the basics of the game down as yet. I read a few times to pick whoever I liked almost everything about, but I just have not found that toon yet. I did not care for Kung Lao or Kabal personally. My favorites so far have been Jax, Striker, and Sub, so I might just see what happens after some time in the lab with them.
