MKD/MKA Online... in 2015

I was being nostalgic watching combo and match videos of MKD and MKA and stumbled on a search result on Google that mentioned OpenSpy... an alternative to GameSpy which we all know is shut down. They said that several games (PS2) that had previous online funcitonality through GameSpy will work through their servers. There was no mention of MKD or MKA to be working there as they use a GameSpy ID which is created in the game once connected.

I searched a bit more and found a Facebook page of someone looking to play MKD online matches from 2012-2014... But there was no mention of how to do it. Looking through more search results, I found this website --> http://www.bobzent.info/ps2.php which says that MKD and MKA work using their server... So I gave it a try. Using my PS2 slim and the MKD disc (from MK Online -> Create or Modify network settings), I put in the manual DNS address from that website and the connection tested successfully.

I then went back into the game (MKD) and opened MK Online from the menu and selected the network setting I just created and IT WORKED :confused:

I was back in the MKD lobby for the first time since 2006... holy shit! There was nobody online, of course, so I had no way to test if a match was possible, but HOLY SHIT! lol

@THTB @R.E.O. @General M2Dave @Krayzie @DanCock and I can't think of anyone else still active who I played with...

My only working PS2 is a slim that lightly scratches my games as I play them... so I have to fix it or get a new PS2. If this truly works, then I am very excited about this! Maybe I'll get the chance to play MKA online with people as I skipped that game for UMK3 when it came out for XBLA.

EDIT: Apparently this same method was used way back in 2012 here --> http://www.designsys.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8543 ... but the info there is old.

This is great!

I definitely want to play this, knowing that internet now is better than what we had back then LOL! Once I get a copy of MKA, I want to test it out.

Hmm, well the PS2 doesn't have an internal online infrastructure and most games are P2P anyway, so it's not too surprising. Final Fantasy 11 is an exception but you have to pay a sub fee for that.

If anyone fires up MKD/MKA again, it's also worth investing for component cables, lets you turn on progressive scan in the options and makes the video quality look much more serviceable on a modern TV.

Never went out of my way to check, but probably. I would offer a few test sets but I have no idea what I'm doing in the 3D games except MKDA which isn't online at all lolol.

Edit: @Konqrr just to double check, the settings you messed around with were all in-game right? Just curious to see if this could also work via a backwards compatible PS3.

Very cool. I'm sure I have a Slim PS2 and one or both games lying around somewhere. Definitely interested to here about any test runs you do.

I am in room 2 on MKA if anyone wants to test with me...

I'll be working on fixing my two slim PS2's as I just fixed up my old fat PS2 that hasn't worked since 2006.

I used these two videos to fix my fat:
For getting it to read discs...

For cleaning under the laser eye... (scary to do, but it was broken anyways lol)

Does anyone know if there is a FAQ that shows the fastest route in Konquest to unlock the chars/costumes/stages in MKD? I have used my AR Max before to have koins not decrease when used to buy something, but I really don't want to dig that out and find the codes.

I am not sure. I haven't found anyone to test connecting with yet, but the online lobby boots up 100% like it used to. You still have an original PS3 or just a PS2 slim? I have connected just fine on both fat and slim, but you can't use the same network config on both systems... but it's not hard to simply create a new one to use.

Gosh, seeing this lobby right now brings back memories. Oh, the shenanigans that ensued and the Motor Kombat chats.

Man, now I'm in practice mode remembering all the crazy stuff these characters had. Just remembered Sektor's 62% juggle that had massive wall carry.

Awesome! sadly my fat PS2 died and now i have three bricks lol .. I an borrowing one and will try to play soon!

I am working on finding the fastest way through konquest mode on MKD to get all characters, stages, and costumes.
