Surprised they didn't bring up SHFFL since they covered L canceling. Short hop, fastfall, use shield in last frames to remove landing recovery...shuffle. Can't do it in Smash 4, but at least they brought up that L canceling automatically via that badge exists still. That thing should be top priority in any custom movesets. Honestly I'd like to see it allowed in tourney as the only legal badge since custom moves are tourney legal. It'd level up tourney play to have auto L cancel grandfathered in as a mechanic thats allowed. Currently though folks are doing air normals in the last frames to remove landing lag. Not as good as Shuffle so far since it doesn't create the whole slingshot of momentum but its close to L canceling.

Also props for posting this for DI. Thats still in and people generally do it wrong. They get hit to the right and hold left...thats not how it works. Hold up. If hit up hold left or right to survive...some things just weren't common knowledge.

Actually, pre-1.04 patch, that was the correct way to DI or 'vector' as it was dubbed. Since then, it appears as if vectoring has been patched out and replaced with regular DI.

Also, although I think smooth landing would be interesting, it's just way to difficult to organise tournament wise.

Yeah. It'd take amiibos, goin into the console, copying the custom character and then accessing it. Thats a bit much. They are doing custom movesets in tourney though so they apparently let folks setup some things. Its not likely something we'd see at majors though. Great stuff if someone sets up a custom moveset with all the base moves and smooth landing badge equipped as an option on each character though.

I just got the game and I was wondering if there is a training mode like MK9. I couldn't find one :/
This is my first smash game so I'm not sure how this game works either..

My bro makes those videos, I'm assuming everything he put in that video is just what he found through research since he's not exactly a fighting game player. He's making another one soon with a special guest voice.

Yup there is a training mode. I'm not by my 3ds so can't walk you through the menus at the moment but will when I get home.

Thats pretty cool. Have him look into the landing lag cancels if any are left. Seems the 1.04 patch removed quite a few tricks like Veggie Cancels and other stuff that was eliminating landing lag. I believe DAIR is still working for quite a few if thrown out in the last frames of a jump to cancel lag for some folks.

Short Hop/Fast Falls are the main basic that I feel folks should get down when picking up Smash. Its the main reason why you should use buttons over hitting up to jump. Its far easier to get short hop fast fall juggles than any other stuff in the game. If you hit up to jump its a struggle to short hop into fast fall by flicking the stick down plus its rough on your controller. Take Sheik and Fox as prime examples of short hop fast fall users. They can almost pogo stick visually with air normals using short hop into fast fall for combos.

Learn this and you will become a lot more dangerous and not just due to combos. It also makes you much harder to read, and much more dangerous and mobile since you can bait easier and punish faster with less risk of getting juggled during a jump. This way folks aren't just doing throws into smashes or airs for all their combos.

For those of you who have played Smash Wii U, what are your thoughts on online?
works pretty decent, so long as it's just 1v1. Any game that has 4 players runs terrible. If it's 2v2 with each team local (I played with a buddy locally against online opponents) it's usually not that bad, but still much less than ideal.

But for 1v1 For Glory the netcode works good enough to be satisfying. It only gets occasionally frustrating when you miss a punish on a roll with a down-smash because of a slight lag hiccup. Lag tends to manifest itself as "stutters" even though it doesn't seem to be using rollback because there is Injustice-like input delay online: so I'm not really sure what's going on behind the scenes.

All in all it's serviceable for 1v1

I'm opting not to use the GCB controller so I'm wondering how the Wii pad will play out.

After about 214 online matches I found the online to be very very good. Then yesterday I had back to back lag fests. Like....hardcore lag. My opponent and I had to kill ourselves, since the timer depleted 1 second of every 10 real life seconds. Yes it was that bad. We both started running to the edge to suicide, and no exaggeration, 4 minutes later we were able to. Yeah. Might have been an isolated group of matches, but other than that it's fine.

Let me guess, you're gonna be using Sonic?

I use the gamepad more often just because I'm lazy. it works but when I switch to a GC controller there is just much more control and comfort I guess.

I actually find the game pad comfortable and I like it, I just dunno about a FG and what i'd prefer... guess i'll find out well as long as it's not unusable in most peoples respects I guess I can get a GCB converter later and see how it goes :) thanks.

And if anyone isn't intimidated by my futile attempt to instill fear and instead wishes to body me, let me know :(

Working on a new Ganondorf tactic off of air flame choke...aka The Chokendorf.

I'm trying to get the timing right, but if you do this move to someone at the absolute edge of a platform Ganondorf will still slam them down to the ground but he will hit the platform and not follow them down. In other words instead of Ganon-ciding someone trying to recover onto the stage and costing us both a stock I can take one of your stocks and not lose a damned thing. Its tricky, but I think its far more doable in this game than before...hitbox on it feels larger.

Here's hoping I can get consistent with the spacing and timing. Edge monstering with Dorf is looking good if I can get this down.

More Ganondorf for those who love him. The new rage factor, air priority, and his juggle off of shoulder make him so much better. Montage is loaded with Chokendorf goodness. Fun fact...do air flame choke and if you time it at the very edge of the platform you are on to connect he still plummets his enemy off the bottom for a stock but he doesn't travel with them and instead just hits the platform and watches them plummet :D

Also fun fact...volcano kick staggers and full shield breaks. It also hits under the stage and is low percent KO. Up tilt is useable from 2.5 Dorf widths from the edge of the stage to charge and check stage recovery. If someone back rolls into it with poor throws start charging during the dodge to get most folks with it. They can't ledge hang when he does it and once you get the timing down of when to charge it you can KO folks as they are forced to commit to their recovery. Don't throw it around much else though.

Ive been considering getting this:
1. Is it any good?
2. Does anybody still play?

Edit: Im thinking about getting 3DS to be specific.

Its very good and yes people still play and will be for quite some time. This forum is a bit slow on community style stuff for it, but its very popular and has many active communities. Folks are likely hanging out for community stuff on Smashboards.

Nice thing about 3ds is if you go to a tourney later the skills transfer over to the console you play on so long as your cool with the controller for the system and I've found the 3ds is actually a pretty decent way to just play casuals and get warmed up too. Good investment all around to have a copy of the 3ds no matter what your intent is though. Plus it has different stages to mess around with for funsies.
