I hatelove this game
I have been thinking a lot about this over the years in both my character choice and my play style. The question is more about how you change your style in either setting and what is most effective in either setting. Let me start by defining the different play styles possible and then consider variables that may vary them in an online or offline setting.
Let me also say, that there isn't necessarily a right or wrong here. Just observations I want to share and get feedback on.
Styles:
Aggressive - All out offense in either the form of rushdown or zoning. It could be either but its best described by needing to constantly doing something. REO is a player that embodies this style best IMO. His kabal overwhelmed you with both rushdown and zoning but he was always doing something. Pig's Zod and Noobe are other great examples of this.
Footsies - Focuses on the space between them and their opponent at all times but isn't doing something all the time. Part of it is patients and the other part is offense. I feel that MIT and DJT embody this more than anyone else in their patient, yet successful with many characters style. Wound Cowboy also comes to mind.
50/50 - Conditioning is a priority above all else and is part of a set long meta in tournament. In a 3/5 tourney match they may try to win 2 of 3 games by going low only to go overhead in the last game. Mind games and out thinking your opponent are how they will win. Sonic Fox and 16 bit are great examples that come to mind.
There are probably more styles I could mention and infinite variations of combined styles that you could use to classify players. Each style can overcome the others in different ways but in an online setting does this stand true? I try to play a "footsie" based game with NW but when I play online I tend to play a combination of aggressive and 50/50...footsies go out the window.
I have come to my own conclusions based on this and I feel that there is a strong consistency between "Online Warriors" and their styles. My opinion is that aggressive players have a strong advantage in an online setting. When you zone or rushdown constantly and your opponent has to "react" to interrupt your patterns, wouldn't they be at a disadvantage due to the natural delay online? Valuable frames are lost and punish windows are minimized. We all know this and have had it happen to us while playing. I just wanted to see the communities opinion.
Which style of play does online favor more?
1) Aggressive
2) Footsies
3) 50/50
Also...which styles do you embody online...offline?
