hi everybody,

I've been playing guitar for quite a while now and have been getting into bass and singing as well lately. as my head fills up with more and more songs that I want to make, I think it's time to get some recording stuff.

I would ask of you, fellow TYM musicians, to give me advice on the hardware/software you use.

Things to note:
- I play mostly rock music
- I play both electric and acoustic guitars
- I'm currently on a windows laptop and not looking to make the move to apple

@AK Pig Of The Hut
@Skkra

would tag more but I've been kinda out of the loop for the last half year or so, work is catching up with me. feel free to tag more people.

thanks in advance to all of you, and keep it up.

i make sometimes for fun electronic music but this goes also for rock i guess:
use steinberg usb interface, cubase 7 and superior drummer.
you can also buy an midi keyboard.

I record on a Windows laptop as well. Not mentioning all of my FX pedals for my individual guitar/bass setups, here is what I use to get the recording done.

I'm using FL Studio to do drum tracking and write electronic music. Once the drums are complete I'll usually export the full track.

I am not a drummer, so I buy a bunch of drum tracks from BetaMonkey. They have a really nice beat selection plus all drums are multi-velocity sampled and included in the disc, so its easy to make my own beats as well.

I then record the guitar, bass and any vocal parts via a Line6 UX2 unit via USB.

I play into the UX2 and do the actual recording with Ableton Live (Lite edition). It has everything I need more my purposes. I take my drum track from Fruity Loops then record all of the instruments using it as the core.

There's my basic flow! Hope this helps you. It really didnt cost that much to put it together, either.

Depends how elaborate you wanna get. I have my studio setup for live recording. Everything into my PA and direct out into the computer via usb. All the mixing is on the board. Currently I use Adobe Audition for the recording/editing. If you're serious you'll want to invest in a Pro Tools rig, but those can get pricey. If you're just looking to throw down some guitar/bass tracks you don't need much.

F1 ftw.
I bought a $100 USB guitar cable that plugs directly into my mac. Whenever I get an idea and don't want to lose it I go straight to my mac, Throw a drum loop on, and record it very easily.

Now recording for real, I'd highly advise just going to a studio, because if you want to do it yourself (and it sound good) you gonna be spending a lot of mulah.

thanks for all the replies so far, guys!

especially @Skkra for the elaborate writeup. I was actually contemplating the UX2 as it seems to be a really solid piece of equipment that covers most of my bases.

@MAPUSA I know a guy who uses cubase, so I'll probably give the software a try seeing how I can get my hands on it for free.

@Clark Luthor I guess it's a little early for studio recording, but who knows where this is going :p

oh and @K7L33THA I had no idea you're a musician too. thanks for the input.

That goes to everyone in this thread. I hope to decide on and get some equipment by the end of next week.

Cheers!

cubase is the most used production software on pc. and the most powerful by far (besides nuendo)
but you should try some demos first and decide. imo you should focus only on this DAW,s: Cubase, Studio one, Sonar, Ableton live.
i can give you support on cubase and ableton live, specially ableton live <3

my own experience is that cubase is maybe too advance, too big for homerecordings, i would say ableton live is the better choice.
about hardware. the question is, how much money u want to spend?

I use pro tools 10 and my guitar bass plugs into my line 6 ux2. I only use plug ins for all my tracks like pod farm 2.0. I use toontrack drumkit superior 2.0 for drums but i suggest ez drummer if you want to save money. I recorded my bands recent record this way and it worked like a charm.

I got my degree in recording and when i had a working rig i had a Imac running pro tools 11, logic 9 reason 4 and soundforge. If you are only looking to record music logic or pro tools. interface wise i would go with what you need and what your fully looking to get into. Such as are you looking to only record or are you looking to record your self and mix??

@MAPUSA I'ma check out both ableton live and cubase and decide which I like better. cubase seems to be really elaborate.

@spitefulsnake I've heard good stuff being said before about ez drummer, so I'll try and give that a try too.

@DuBBer Kiir thanks for the real-life example, very interesting. the dual guitar-thing at around :10 gave me the castlevanias :)

@Gweedo888 in order to write more elaborate stuff and layer multiple instruments, recording is the #1 priority right now, but I'll have to get my head around recording eventually. just a shame it takes so much time to fully "get" these programs and what you can truly do with em.

overall it's looking pretty good for the line6 ux2 so far, I'll try to check that out in the near future. just a real shame I got way too few hours a week I can really invest into my quest for recording stuff atm.

thanks again for the input and keep em coming!
