Variations: MK9 Kharacters / How they might be preserved

Hey Guys,

I just wanted your opinion on a theory I've came up with and how it may affect the return of some of the MK9 roster...

How might variations been implemented on the old cast? In other words just how much variation can be given to a character before the overlap with another character's identity? In others the best candidates for return would be characters that can combine and iterate on a couple character's fighting styles. For instance...

Ermac = Old Ermac + Rain Orb+ Kenshi Telekinesis + Noob Shadows
Sektor = Old Sektor + Cyrax Variant + Cyber-Sub Variant

Consider the potential for multiple characters to be represented through the variants of a solatary cast member. Is it that difficult to see Sektor and Cyrax becoming one in the same character? Perhaps Kitana and Jade's combat style could be summed into a single Edenian character using different weapons? Tanya, if introduced, could even have her signature Corkscrew Kick/Split Kick stylized around a rushdown version of Mileena

As much as it pains me to say, combatants that just don't offer a lot of thematic exploration most likely won't make it into the game - their calling cards however will be represented in variations. For example D'vorrah seems to be a flavored Jade. Kano seems to mimic Stryker and Jax. Kotal also explores the grappling territory set by Jax. Consider this...

Reptile = Old Reptile + Kabal's speed
Noob & Smoke = Could be reconn'd into the same being again to explore "Noob Variant" "Smoke Variant" and finally "Noob Smoke Variant"

My forecast for Returning Characters (based on how they benefit from the variant system)

Ermac

Sektor

Noob Smoke

Reptile

Ermac - is most likely to return just because of how much diversity the variant system lends to his character design. His powers could easily take the form of tele-slams/ tele-attacks reminiscent of Kenshi. Rain's water orb could be represented easily. Additional zone/space control influences could be sourced from Noob. Its just a win-win as Ermac can easily explore multiple play styles represented by several MK9 characters.

Sektor - I believe we all know there is going to be some sort of cyber ninja represented in MKX. Given just the nature of Sektor and his clan - the pursuit of perfection/ technical evolution. 3 Characters can easily be captured by a single fighter. Sektor's missles...Cyrax's bombs/nets...Cyber Sub's mobility...each offer three very distinct playstyles with a core set of protects + teleport. Sektor being the grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, its not that difficult to imagine that 20 years has given him the opportunity to make some upgrades.

Noob Smoke - the more I think about it, the more appealing the idea of "Noob Smoke" seems. Not only would it be recalling back the Deception/Armageddon Era of MK but adds layers of richness to moveset possibilities. These could be explored with variants such as Solo Smoke - Solo Noob - Noob Smoke. This is fundamentally killing two birds with one stone.

Reptile - historically, what Reptile has been capable off as been all over the place. He runs fast. Perhaps that could be iterated into a fight style with lots of quick jabs/lock down set-ups. He launches acid mines and spits venom: the perfect basis for a zoning/keep away style. He turns invisible. Now this is a wild-card suggestion but depending on how far Netherrealm wants to push the envelope - combining Reptile's trade mark speed and invisibility could lead to a very satisfying cheese variant full of mid-combo invisibility. All and all these seem like the basis for a good moveset; however, D'vorrah kind of introduces on the "weird creature combatant". It seems like she might be to Kotal as Reptile was to Shang Tsung. It is a shame that Reptile doesn't carry a lot of weight in any MK story - he's mostly a lackey. But depending on how the cast shifts, maybe Reptile would be more important? If Reptile makes it in, I'd wager to say he'd play similar to Old Reptile+ Injustice's Flash + MK9 Kabal: in other words he would be defined by his speed & invisibility.

gotta stay sharp!
This is interesting. Although I don't know how many people would like to see that, but I can definitely get behind noob-smoke. That would be awesome if done right.

All too easy...
Finally, someone with character selection base off of the variations and how well they would work with them. I agree with a lot of what you have said on these characters, the Reptile ideas are very interesting. I would say that Noob definitely has enough potential for 3 variations on his own due to the versatility of his powers. Smoke i think if he returns might actually be cyber smoke, making him the character that could represent the robots with each variation being a mix between human Smoke and each robot (Sektor, Cyrax, and cyber smoke/cyber sub)

Y'all need to temper your expectations with the reality that x is not going to contain the entirety of 9. They aren't just going to shovel a mk9 Kabal variation on some random character just cause they kinda have a speed move too. Nrs changes up their characters every game.

While I do agree with this, I also feel certain moves aren't going to be just "thrown away".

For example, I don't think some "repainted" Kabal will show up as a new character, but I DO think if he doesn't make the game some new speedster/Flash type character will have his dash special as one of their moves. Or if Kung Lao doesn't make it a successor or another new character will have his spin.

I'm 99.9% sure this will happen.

Problem with Cyber Smoke is... that bascially makes the loss of Human Sub to Cyber and then death... pointless. Raiden saves smoke instead hoping to change the outcome.

I don't care I'm not a competitive player anymore
While I like the idea, I don't know if I should expect so much difference from the variance system considering the changes we've already seen only affect a few qualities about the character as opposed to an entirely conflicting concept.

I agree wholeheartedly, throwing out old moves, concepts and mocap is certainly not a thing. We've already seen Kano use Cyrax's bomb string and Scorpion using Mileena's telekick.

How about an "Edenian Princess" where It's like Kitana or Mileena but each version is like "Kitana", "Mileena", "Jade" and borrows some moves from those characters :D

A Baraka/Mileena descendant could be hella interesting. One variant could have Baraka's Chop Chop and Mileena's Leaping Neckbite and be all about savage brutality, then another could have Mileena's Roll and Telekick and emulate her anti-zoning style, then the third could have Baraka's Blade Charge and Spinner. Universal moves could be Mileena's Sai Toss and Baraka's Slicer.

Then you could have some demented mixture of Kitana's, Sindel's and Jade's essence within a reanimated corpse (Quan Chi would definitely do something that deranged...) Universal moves could be Kitana's fans, Jade's Shadow Kick and a levitate move similar to Sindel's. Then her 'Kitana' variation could involve gaining Square Wave Boost and certain fan-slice strings similar to Kitana's, the 'Jade' variation could grant her fan moves with boomerang properties and also Jade's Shadow Flash, and the 'Sindel' Variation could give her Sindel's Scream and also infuse her fans with scream energy for more power (plus the ability to low fan). :D

They'll keep Kitana's influence in the game somehow - she's far too ubiquitous to just be completely forgotten about.
