My grandfather died from ALS at a pretty young age. I think it's cool that everyone is doing this, I don't see the reason in knocking it.

Not to be a hater, but does this really raise awareness? I didn't know that ALS was Lou Gehrigh's (spellcheck) disease until I looked it up, I've just seen a lot of people doing a really lame test of courage

It's really odd that the ice challenge has only just hit the USA. It was a big thing here in New Zealand a few months ago and was used to get donations for the cancer society. Also it was much harder for us. I had to have my feet sitting in a bucket of ice water while I got 2 buckets of icy water tipped on my head and then the one my feet were in was also tipped on me. It was also winter here so it was already cold enough outside haha...

First of all, for those that do not know, this started months ago on FaceBook with random people doing it. I probably got called out in 5 or 6 videos before I realized what it was. Then, not only did I do the challenge for all those that called me out, but I also donated. Most people are doing the challenge AND donating. People that can not afford to donate, at least by doing the challenge, they are still calling out 5 people who may end up donating, so it still helps. It has gone so viral that most celebrities are posting videos doing this, most doing the challenge and donating. Just because celebrities are doing it, people are following suit and doing it.

This Ice Bucket Challenge alone has raised nearly 20 million dollars for ALS research. Say what you want, but this an amazing cause, even if dumping a bucket of ice over your head seems dumb.

I had no idea what ALS was until I saw a bunch of people I know on Instagram doing it, and I actually ended up looking ALS up. Even if most of them aren't donating, it's a good way to raise awareness about ALS.

If an event that brings awareness and raises $15.6 million bloody dollars (9 times more in the same amount of time that they usually do) is not the definition of a good charity then holy shit, I really want to hear what your standards for a good charity is.

A cynical person might suggest that the only way to get people to donate money is to give them a way to make it about that person as we have become such a narcissistic society.

Yes, it's annoying watching your facebook friends posture for attention, but this fad has been an absolute home-run for the foundation. Try not to be too cynical about it, most people are just having fun.
