Should companies milk game series?

The Great One

"I Always d1 Lif-" SHUT UP
So if you guys haven't heard Ubisoft is coming out with a new Assasins Creed this year. "Assasins Creed Unity". The first assasins creed game got released in 2007 and it took them 2 years to make assasins creed 2 (which was one of the best in the series). After they realized the series started getting popular they started releasing games on a yearly basis all the way from brotherhood until unity.

My problem with this is that the changes seem lacking. Other than a change of scenery plot and like one additional major change the series hasn't been upgrading significantly. Game series like Bioshock (eh) and Batman Arkham series from rocksteady (Amazing) have their studios working on a game and actually caring about it.

There are other game series known for milking their games like
  1. Call of Duty
  2. EA sports games
  3. Final Fantasy
  4. Pokémon
  5. Simulators/football manager
  6. EA Fps (medal of honor/battlefield/ect)
The case against milking a game series is that it the quality decreases because of lack of effort and time put into creating the game whilst not giving players a break. Games like Elder Scrolls and Grand theft auto have given players a break to enjoy the past games and get hype for new ones. Even fighting games like SF and MK have breaks in which they make games different from the past. Players would rather get one large beautiful game once every 5 years than 5 discount copies.

The case FOR milking a game series like the vice president of ubisoft said “We are able to offer people a new Assassin’s Creed every year because they want Assassin’s Creed every year,”. It gives the companies we like money to keep making these games so the series doesn't die out. I mean obviously we must really like every single cod game that comes out right? But even with the fan outcry of the series being milked they make billions of dollars. If the fans really wanted them to stop they would stop buying them right?

What do you guys think. The only reason I'm really posting this post is because I'm pissed that ubisoft is coming out with Assasins Creed Rogue two weeks after Assasins Creed unity is coming out...

It looks awesome but...I'm not gonna be expecting much

Im not gonna be "that guy" but capcom does milk the fuck out of SF with their names of Super, AE,and Ultra. thats like a WTF but I know I know its for update to make the game better for the competitive scene but they do tend to lean towards the casual player though. MK did it once with the Komplete Edition which is ok. This AC Rogue doesnt look bad though, Im just gonna have to wait and see, too bad its only for PS3 but it would be also if it was for PS4 also so I wont have to buy the game twice.

I'm glad you brought up Assassin's Creed. As a die-hard Assassin's Creed fan even I was able to see they were milking the franchise after AC3 came out. Every AC game was building up to AC3 because it was supposed to be a glorious climax filled with resolution. What do we get instead? Another fucking cliffhanger with little explanation and the main character dies. AC4 was worse, little to no story progression and the modern day story sucks a bag of dicks. It sucks companies do it but it's all about business numbers at the end of the day to them

Gesture Required Ahead

Get on that hook
I stopped caring about AC after 3 because
Desmond dies
. I don't even know wtf they're doing with the story and I seriously don't care.

Man it really sucks that AC was made by Ubisoft, if only it were another company maybe like Bethesda they'd know how to love their series aside from the money it makes.

EDIT: Added a spoiler tag by request. Happy now?

Depends which perspective you look at it from. For a business, it's needless to say that they want to profit, and if they know they can cut production costs and time, yet still profit on a consistent basis, then they will obviously release a new game every year, as is the case with Assassin's Creed.

A gamer, on the other hand, wants a good, fun game worth the money they spend on it. This doesn't necessarily need to be a GOTY, so the time spent developing isn't really all that relevant as long as they get what they expect. And if they do, they will continue buying a new game ever year because, even though no innovation is going into the franchise, its consistency makes it so consumers know exactly what it is they're buying. Obviously fans want something more, but they're so attached to these games, they continue to buy them.

And finally, there are the designers themselves, who would love to give fans exactly what they want and more, but are restricted by a budget and other limitations imposed onto them.

It's not really a question of whether people like a series being milked or not. Everyone wants to see an installment in their favorite franchise that goes up and beyond anything presented before it, but sometimes that's just not how it works.

Ive enjoyed every AC story mode to date, so I dont see a problem with them releasing a new one every year.

Edit: Borderlands is coming out with two BL games this year too FYI, and they both look fucking awesome.

That's a huge part of what makes Street Fighter, well... Street Fighter.

Seriously though, can you even imagine them just making the one Street Fighter 5 in the future and not coming out with any updates for it? :p

Bethesda is doing it correctly, releasing a elder scrolls game every 2-4 years is smart and skyrim is still one of the best games of this decade. As for assassins creed , I never even finished 3 (thanks for spoilers of Desmond dying @Skellington ) because it was boring, Only haytham made the game fun and to me the series has gotten stale with the same missions in every single one and not that great voice acting for certain characters. Madden to me is the biggest milked series out of any game ever made, I own every CoD and at least call of duty trys to entertain you with cool maps and zombies and what not, but madden doesn't even fuckin try at all. madden 25 is a joke, terrible defense op offense, the defense=joker the offense=mmh. you cannot fucking stop a human being most of the time on offense, you can call the most spot on play ever, and the ai will fucking stand there like retards and not make a play on the ball. no real franchise mode in 25 either, why can't I play as a team in franchise anymore, they took out the one thing that made madden good like wth are they thinking at EA. madden is the biggest milked franchise ever. they make shit games year after year and I fall for the trap and end up buying it.

True, but its a bitch just to keep buying the same game for an update. Im a physical disc guy and then they say you can buy the update for $19.99 might as well just buy the damn game again...

As crazy as this sounds i actually care about AC multiplayer, which is why i enjoyed AC3. AC4 comes out and imo the multiplayer is crap and boring, which is why the hardcore guys went back to ACB and ACR. I think that if given another 6 months to a year of development the AC4 multiplayer could have been much better. But NOOOOOOO ubisoft had to listen to online scrubs and nerf smoke bomb and knives (the only viable hard stuns in the game) but they kept wipe (the best ability in both AC3 and AC4) as is and keep the gun (which is the scrubbiest thing i have ever seen is the AC gun ). Devs milking money is bad for consumers because they stop caring about us and then produce utter crap. But it probably wont change so, *sigh*

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
for me, it's always about quality over quantity; so releasing games with such short amount of time space it's almost guaranteed result of laziness development and "fast money" greedy tactics from companies.

at least MKX is coming up 4 years after MK9 .... what points out that NRS opted for a better approach regarding development life cycle, and MKX will be a final product with AAA quality. ;)

I still think the best AC is the first one, i'm currently on the AC III and i'm already bored as fuck.

I dunno why ubisoft stopped making prince of persia, those were really good.

Splinter cell is good too, from convictions to Blacklist there is major improvement and technical maneuvers, all was improved.

AC is like the black sheep of crap

I personally dont mind getting several new version of a game especially for a competitive game like SF4. But i feel Capcom missed alot of opportunities to add features which should be for any game today standard, like ingame Framedata, Hitboxes, a good Tutorial for new players... imo.

If a game gets consistent updates (balance, content, features) im totally fine with buying every xx months a new version.

For CoD i feel you pay every year money to just continue to play the game because everyone switches without getting any good improvments.

I agree with everything but the smoke bomb. Being able to drop it during your kill animation was broke.

Agree with everything else though.

even then, there were MANY ANY MANY ways to get around smoke bomb. (Also I don't remember ever seeing that but I haven't played in a year)

CoD is milked to death and littered with atrocious DLC pack after DLC pack, Madden is the annual 60 dollar roster update, BF is slowly killing itself, FF has become a watered down action game with pretty colors and hair that defies the laws of physics. SF well granted it also has atrocious DLC BS 90% of the time and they just keep tagging a name on top of it, it at least isn't an annual release and its mainly just to continue to provide support.

AC is really the only member of the annual bunch that seems to at least try to bring something new in every installment. AC3 implemented and tested out the naval warfare mechanics and AC4 refined them and in all honesty most of that game was a descent game with at least an entertaining story. Haven't seen anything on Rouge yet, but now Unity is toying with the concept of coop and I'm sure the SP will be descent. I typically hate most annual release games, most the time they are rushed and do nothing new just the same shit different toilet, but AC seems to have some exception and I stress SOME exceptions.

It really is time for the industry to start taking some risks and start bring new things to the table, because IMO constant sequelitis and and re-makes/ HDified games are getting old. Its sad that lately I've been bored of new games and have spent more time playing Castlevania SOTN

Thats just how I see it

Well, at least they were patching/changing the game AND adding new characters and stages the whole time.

On topic: If they do some spin off or sequel or three-quel to another final fantasy game before 15 comes out I'm going to scream. I'm one ass hair away from not caring for Square Enix.

What annoys me about AC4 multiplayer is that EVERYONE is only playing manhunt. It might find me a different mode once in awhile but the hunted one has NEVER found a match for me. It says there is literally no match for that mode going on so it gives me the general search queue and then bam, fucking manhunt mode. Like its cool and all but I feel like its so damn scrubby. There's almost no point in trying to blend in or anything like that because your team always runs around hungry for kills and shit all willy nilly. My experience is that AC3 multiplayer>AC4 multiplayer.
