Will they though? I mean we literally don't know dick other than a couple of special moves changing... I mean seriously it seems like the main changes are losing set 1 of special moves and gaining set 2 instead. It really doesn't seem that different from Ultras.

I mean yes it changes the meta/set ups but so does ultra selection.
Well, we do know some of their ideas by now. When one set of specials looks like Kenshi's spirit stuff and another is probably more like acid hand / slide / MS~1 (or something to that effect, mostly speculating ofc), it already makes all kinds of differences.
Of course things may change by the time of release, but at least we can discuss options on how to go about whatever will come out eventually.

We actually do have a Prime example. Ferra/Torr. One variation Homeboy ditches his little companion and gains an entire new moveset. Sooooooooooo.

Select your character, select your variation, your opponent does the same.

Fight

You got your back blown out, go back to character select, select your character, select your variation. Your opponent is locked. (Or can rematch like a boss)

Fight

You win, go back to character select, pick your same character, pick your same variation, your opponent picks the same character, your opponent selects a new variation.(Or can rematch like a boss)

Fight

You got your back blown out, you are now in losers.

pretty friggin simple, how I thought of it, Well every other fighter is like that, Soooooooooooooo.
i think NRS should add an option of Hidden Select Character Variation to prevent counter pick at the beginning of a set

Or like in kof selecting your team, set each variation to a button lol
Your OP seems to work on premise that variations should be treated like different characters, but not here.
Anyway, would be nice to experiment on that a bit when the game is out.

Yeah I know that, but I didn't know if its was confirmed if he got an entire new moveset. Like I thought a lot of his normals were the same and he just lost his special moves involving Ferra? I mean I haven't obsessed over the footage that much but do any of his normals use Ferra? and therefore change in Torr only mode?
I thought it was known by now that each variation has different strings as well?
I did not know this. I was mainly going by the descriptor under each style at character selection which made it just sound like 2 of their special moves change.

In any case, no one addressed the other thing that I said, which is what's wrong with winner variation switching first if loser goes character select? If loser is going to counter-pick then they still can? It just seems more fair to me that of completely getting screwed over for winning?

If this were SF then winner can repick a different variation FIRST.
So still no counter-picking for the winner, but they can change variation.
How would this be any different from just letting the winner pick an entirely new character? Is that still not counter picking if we let him do it first?

SF tourneys lets you change one move. A single, meter heavy move that is exceptionally situational and generally only seen once or twice per match. It telegraphs your entire end round strategy and otherwise your character is absolutely identical (footsies, specials, movement options, etc). Meanwhile, Scorpion gains an entirely different set of normals in Sword style, Ferra/Torr loses the girl (both projectiles, and normals) in Lackey, and Sub Zero gains the ability to negate goddamned chip damage in Unbreakable.

Unless you're okay with Cyber Sub and Sub being interchangeable ON WIN, this game needs to be variation locked.

I just suspect that a lot of the variations are created as a specific counter to a style, I know the same can be said of characters I guess, but I think that certain variation match-ups are going to be horrendously lopsided. I guess I underestimated how much was changed in each variation  I thought it was closer to different Ultras than to a new character.

Where art thou, MKX Skarlet?
Why does the loser get any advantage in the first place? Why not just let both people switch characters every round if they want to?

Just curious.

There are definitely going to be a lot of useless or MU specific variations, I ain't never seen a fighter with 72 well balanced characters in it. But we've already seen enough disparity between the variations to call them characters and that means they need to be locked.

Loser "advantage" just keeps the game interesting. You lose, you get a chance to adjust your tactics and its fair because if you beat me after that, I get to do the same. In my eyes, its the same principle as giving the loser the ball after the other team scores in 90% of professional sports.

How come in an injustice tournament if I win game one someone can counterpick me with superman and im not allowed to counterpick that counterpick with raven before game 2 starts?

I'm a fan of character locking, not variation lock. Winner has to pick first. Same theoretical advantage for the loser, more interesting for the winner and likely more hype for the audience.

But what if the stage favors power..............oh......oh wait a minute............stage doesn't decide the victor is this game, does it?

Heh heh....heh heh... Heh heh...

Roof top counter pickers, God help you all...

But this...
